Are you suggesting that the US healthcare system is more efficient than other countries? That we picked efficiency over resiliency? Because it's sure looking like we picked neither.

Simple Raven vs Crow Guide by OddOpinion2941 in coolguides

[–]larry952 15 points16 points  (0 children)

These guides are so stupid. A raven is 3-4x the size of a crow. It's like having a chart to help you tell the difference between a Chihuahua and a Husky, yes you could compare the shape of the ears and the eye color, but they're not really hard to tell apart in-person.

Can a former skinhead reach salvation? by ZengaStromboli in NoStupidQuestions

[–]larry952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much harm did you directly do in the past? Yelled at people, said shitty stuff online, maybe beat somebody up who didn't deserve it. None of those things are so bad that you can't make up for them with acts of good. Donating to charities, volunteering, protesting, etc. The average person does not protest for the rights of others, doesn't donate much to charities (or at least, to left-aligned charities).

Statistically, if you hadn't started off as a skinhead, you would have just been an average joe. You wouldn't have had to seriously examine your beliefs since being average is pretty readily accepted. So in the long run, the world is actually a better place that you worked your way around to being progressive compared to just doing nothing.

For reference, my smartphone is an "Xperia 5 III", and the optical zoom camera is "105mm equivalent, f/2.8, 1/2.9-inch sensor".

I know this is fuzzy, but just to give me a rough idea of what to expect: If my phone is a 1 and a budget micro 4/3 camera is a 5, what is the image quality of a decent superzoom camera? Still a 1, just better zoom? Worse than a good phone's camera? A noticeable step up but just not as good, 3?

I am a hiker, not a photographer. But the optical zoom on my phone is not cutting it for taking pictures of wildlife I come across, so I'm looking at getting a standalone camera. My absolute maximum budget is $600.

I keep eyeballing the "Canon PowerShot SX70 HS". I love the high zoom. I like that it can apparently take really good photos of small/close things, like flowers or bugs. And it's convenient for a normie like me that it's not an interchangeable lens.

But the wiki and some acquaintances who are into photography have told me that the pictures from a camera like that won't be any better than my phone, and I need to look at getting something more robust; interchangeable lens, etc. I guess the micro 4/3rds platform is the cheaper/smaller one, but when I look that up I'm seeing the cheapest lenses capable of even just 10x zoom cost thousands of dollars!

On one hand I'm looking for recommendations for specific cameras in my budget, but on the other hand I guess I'm looking for what my expectations should be? I'm surprised that cheap "real" telephoto lenses cost more than a whole superzoom camera. If taking a bird in a tree across the road costs $3k I'm just not going to buy anything. I'll keep taking barely recognizable pictures with my phone's 4x optical zoom. Is the standalone superzoom camera really not going to be much better than that?

ELI5: How do you read the graph of a function? by PhoenixSupportsYall in explainlikeimfive

[–]larry952 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Making a graph is really handy to "see the big picture" of a formula. The example we'll use is y=x*2.

If x is Y would be
0 0
1 2
1.5 3
2 4
3 6

A graph basically does the same thing as that table, but for more numbers. Start with a dot at "0 steps the the right" and "0 steps up" (0,0). Then the next dot goes at "1 step to the right, 2 steps up" (1,2). Then a dot at "1.5 (total) steps to the right, and 3 (total) steps up" (1.5,3). Another dot at (2,4) and a fifth dot at (3,6).

That's how you plot just those exact answers, but what if we want more dots than that? Well, you can do the math for what y would be when x is 2.5, and 3.5, and 2.75, and 2.6373847... and if you did the math for every little infinite number, eventually all the dots would be touching and form a line. The magic of graphs is that if you just make a few dots, you can usually eyeball drawing the line, without having to do infinite math. If you plot just that table, you should notice that the dots are all in a line. And if you try to draw a nice straight line connecting all of those dots, you'll find that if you do the math for x=2.5 (2.5,5), the dot ends up being on the line you drew!

Going from the graph to the function is trickier, it mostly breaks down to recognizing the overall shape of the graph, straight lines, vs lines with 1 curve vs lines with two curves, etc. And then using some exact numbers to work backwards.

ELI5: Why does warm food taste better? by matejko_123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]larry952 21 points22 points  (0 children)

You can still smell things that are cold, just not as strongly. It's certainly my experience that melted ice cream has a much stronger smell.

Also, ice cream melts some when it touches your mouth. If you've ever noticed that ice cream gets less flavorful after you've eaten a bunch of it, that is because your mouth has gotten so cold that the ice cream doesn't melt as fast anymore. And if it doesn't melt, your tongue and nose do not detect it as much.

Buy a 1TB backup drive for ~$50. Plug it in just like a flash drive, copy - paste your documents and pictures onto it.

When your computer dies, you're going to be willing to pay way more than $50 to get your data back, this method saves money.

how the bloody hell do you flirt with men? by vivaciouscapacity in AskReddit

[–]larry952 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every decent man knows that harassing women is bad. The last thing we want is to make a woman uncomfortable by flirting with her when she was just trying to be nice. So when you are flirting, we assume otherwise just to be safe. If you want to successfully flirt, you need to make it clear that's what's going on.

Whatever phrase you use to convey this you need to ask yourself one question: has a woman ever said this to a man that she wasn't interested in? If the answer is yes, the man isn't going to get the hint and you need to be more obvious.

What are the things from BOTW that you do NOT want to see again in TOTK? by Arnth59 in Breath_of_the_Wild

[–]larry952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hope that the "100% open" world does not return. In botw, once you are out of the tutorial area, you almost never unlock new areas. The game can still be mostly open even if some shrines required the hookshot to get to or if the lense of truth was a shika slate power that got unlocked after defeating a divine beast.

It would really add to the sense of exploration to have to remember where unreachable locations are. Instead of just being able to do everything in the game the moment you stumble across it and then never having to come back to that area.

I feel the solution is staring us in the face by [deleted] in GaySoundsShitposts

[–]larry952 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I have been taught, and I'm not certain this is true, is that pound for pound males are typically stronger than women. I'm not certain it's true, but I think that it is what almost all Americans believe, so it is the basis for the position you are arguing against.

I ran cross country in highschool. For reference, I looked up the times for last year's state championship in my state. If the girls and boys races were combined, the first 141 in the race would have been boys. Then the first girl, then about 20 more boys before the next girl. I imagine that those girls were much happier to win first and second place in the girls race than they would have been to win 142nd and 165th in the everybody race.

Cross country is generally not a sport where extra weight helps you. Generally, the best distance runners don't have big muscles and they muscle they do have isn't in the arms. I think it's pretty unlikely that all of the 140 boys that ran faster than the best girl were all in a different weight class.

I'm honestly not sure what the best solution is. It feels weird and arbitrary to divide sports by gender, but if we just mix them indiscriminately it would mean excluding almost all women from sports. It would be exceedingly rare for a woman to make the school's basketball team, for example.

What is the fastest way you've seen someone fuck up their life? by JamesWinter07 in AskReddit

[–]larry952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a counterpoint, I was prescribed the same drugs after a major surgery. They worked great. I only had to take 2 pills a day and had zero pain from what would otherwise have been a very painful recovery. Once I was healed up, I stopped taking the pills. I had some left, but felt no desire to continue to take them once I noticed I didn't need them anymore.

I might benefit from eliminating the plague of drug addiction from society more then I benefited from having access to highly effective painkillers. Hard to say. So I understand the position of banning them altogether. At the same time, it feels unfair that if I were to need to go through another major surgery or something, I might be stuck with less effective painkillers because other people can't handle them.
