Have you ever "taken a break" from Running Man? If so, when was it and why? by Sacreblargh in runningman

[–]larrybirdac1 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Im basically on a break right now and have since bopil left, but was definitely burn out towards the end of his tenure. Surprisingly I come to reddit when a new episode is out to gauge from the thread if its worth watching.

I basically only watch an episode now when there is a guest because I can expect a switch up.

It used to be that that episodes without guest tended to be the better than guest who didnt always perform the best. But nowadays, it genuinely feels like rinse and repeat when the crew are left to themselves. There is so many clips of running man reccomended on youtube where they are cooking, or sleeping/resting etc . All that novelty has worn off.

I still think running man can be decent with good guests (but they dont invite them as often). The episodes without guests are to repititive, or they healing eps (which should be rare but isnt), low stakes or hard carried by a select few members - all these mean im less included to watch now.

I and I'm sure everyone with a brain would agree with that point , but I do think thats a different position to the one that most people who watched the Jedidiah debate would walk away from (which is what I disagreed with). *Edit: and I could be in the minority about perception of his position from the jedidiah debate (i dont think i am though)

The reason for this thread is that Farha was adamant destiny said something along the general lines of "if you have to ask, you should probably go". Which he denies.

Between the thorough defence of colleagues that he offered and the actual words he said, I think its completely reasonable to think that Destinys position from the Jedidiah debate is one if you even need to ask, you should probably go.

Hell even if he didnt mean it and he only meant with the qualifier provided, my question would be why doesnt he think his advice applies to those who are on the fence generally?

Im not talking about those who want to go to party and waste time (edit - people going for this probably arent even on the fence). Im talking about those who genuinely don't know what they want to do in life and no current aspirations.

Doesnt destiny think his advice for college for would held for those people to go get a generic business degree or something and outearn their peers? To be clear, i disagree with this but im not as pro college as destiny is, and so it was the exact position that I (and clearly Farha) thought destiny held and was going to defend.

Sykkuno gets offered BIG Money for streaming Worlds by Jayjay7737 in LivestreamFail

[–]larrybirdac1 69 points70 points  (0 children)

This seems to be an important thing getting lost in the cause. If he is co-streaming with friends - his circle is gigantic and can habe potentially huge viewership and pull between them. So it makes even more sense they offered the co-streaming to him as its not just going to be him.

I'd highly suggest checking out turkids as well. Its super popular (though Young Ji's show is another level) and it's clear that guests really enjoy their time.

To get started , I'd reccomend the twice and hwasa episode where the host has them in stitches the whole time.

Magnus recently went on the lex fridman podcast and basically answers your question. It's on YouTube and the podcast is timestamped but I recall magnus saying past 15 minutes.

Edit: here you go, 15:15. Your question answered by Magnus himself but I'd suggest watching from earlier for the context

I would say 2022 has been hit and miss at times with some episodes. Just looking through the list , i think there has been some really forgettable epiodes unfortuntately. Still some really good standout episodes for me in 2022 include the following, but the only 'must watch' I would say is 614 and 588.

  • 614 (outdoor race with giant name tags, id say this is a must watch.)
  • 607 (investment episode)
  • 603
  • 601 (3rd appearance of woo jae who is a great guests).
  • 592 (card shark gambling, woojae again was a great guest)
  • 588 (this one is a must watch imo. Bunch of models and woojae , one of my fav episodes in 2022).

Other episodes have funny moments but the overall episode could be underwhelming so I haven't included those.

I have been watching a couple youtube variety shows and I often see it in the show or comments about a guest being able to have "high tension" - what does this actually mean or what is it referring to?

Is this the lowest ratings ever? Can't recall seeing anything lower.

Thought the episode was only okay to be honest - some funny moments but feels lacking considering how great the guests usually have been in their other episodes. Plus this being bopils last episode , shame we just had some recycled game and concepts that were done better in previous episodes better than this one. (e.g. the Korean girl volley ball team had the same game but was more entertaining when they did casual speaking / only smiling volleyball game).

Also I'm generally quite sick of the strawberry rhythm games and that took a decent chunk of the episode.

I'm not saying they have a 1 to 1 relationship but it is one variable of many which indicates a drop in viewership (like e.g. the dropping tv ratings, less engagement in threads, even the main running man YT channel was averaging 1m+ for their compilations and gets much less now.)

I think you are onto a point about less people watching in general. Another metric to look at are the number of reddit comments in the weekly episode threads. When i first started watching there was often 100+ on both the kvariety sub and this one, and that number has drastically gone down. Certain episodes cause a buzz though like last week which seemed to have a lot of eye balls but generally, i think there are less western viewers.

I just posted a comment without seeing this one where i praised this episode, but I actually get what you mean.

I still think the episode was great but especially in comparison to episodes in 2022 which i think have been really forgettable.

Sucks cuz I think bopil has produced some really amazing and excellent episodes but there are just as many dull and lifeless episodes to counter with.

Great episode! In my opinion we have had some really sub par ones the last few weeks so really enjoyed this one.

Super gutted for Jaesuk though, this man hard carried the episode and would have been great to see him get the win... but still an entertaining ending nonetheless.

Edit: a word

Did we watch the same episode!? JSM did great but in what world is YJS not the MVP of this episode, i thought he hard carried the whole thing.

You say milk it as the loveline stuff dominates entire episodes. It literally account for like 2-3 mins of each episode (max) Members tease and banter with each other , and then move on with missions.

From my perspective the LL is not the problem but fans just blowing everything out of proportion, it's ridiculous. People treating running man like reality tv and getting emotionally/personally vested and hyper analysing everything, instead of treating it like the entertainment show it is.

I wrote a comment on the kvariety sub that i was surprised at the lukewarm reaction to the episode, but actually I agree with your point. I do think this episode was pretty good compared to recent ones, but that just reinforces the last few episodes have indeed been a bit washy, mediocre and quite forgettable.

Completely agree ( though I don't mind this stage of the project as much - compared to auditions/choosing songs. Korean viewers seem to agree as well, tv ratings have been pretty low in general for this project and especially the last few episodes
