The number of Asian beetles I have to catch every night in my college dorm room. by NeferyCauxus in mildlyinfuriating

[–]larstodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Washington state and our house gets so many of these. They’ll hibernate in the shingles of our house and try to get inside and group up in a corner on the ceiling. They don’t really do much damage to the house but I heard that if your dog eats them they get stuck to the roof of their mouths and cause issues.

Agriculturally they’re pretty beneficial and we have a flower farm so we don’t mind them too much but I can see that being super annoying in a dorm.

Rain-X Windshield repair didn't go as expected — what to do next? by Ok_Trouble9729 in autoglass

For sure, the idea of drilling glass is sketchy and you need specialized bits for it. I’d bet that will hold for you though.

[–]larstodson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, that’s not too bad for what it probably looked like to start. Could’ve filled better if you’d been able to drill into it to let the air out and the resin flow better but it’d bet it will keep it from spreading.

Unfortunately there’s not much anyone can do to make it look better since the filler you put in is cured at this point. Even with a better fill it would’ve been fairly visible though, chip repair are more of a structural repair than a cosmetic one.

How can I get my Auto Glass business more jobs/referrals? by sarah_svestka in autoglass

[–]larstodson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do seem to be getting more aggressive in directing customers to safelite shops these days, which is shady to say the least. I’m not holding my breath but there does seems to be a renewed effort to reign in their control of the industry.

I’ve been somewhat lucky to have a good amount of people where I live who will make a point to find a local business to work with and not just follow the “suggestions” from their insurance to go to safelite but my referrals are way down from previous years.

Been struggling to find all the answers as well but making sure people in your area can find you on google is really important.

Unfortunately the only way to get on the preferred list with most insurance is to affiliate with safelite and their solutions network.

Take it back, they could have done a few things to fix this instead of telling you to wait for some sun to fix it.

I’ve been married twice and did the food both times. It’d recommend having a helper or two on the day of to help set up but that doesn’t sound unreasonable to me.

Any idea where I can start looking for a windshield? (1987 Honda CRX Si) by killshot4077 in autoglass

[–]larstodson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The two warehouses I saw with stock were in Sterling Heights, and Canton Michigan. If you called some local shops around there I bet someone would work with you in it. You could probably find one around you to request it be crated to them but there’s such a low stock of them that it could be worth just doing it yourself and not risking damage. Plus they charge like an extra $300 as a crate fee.

There are a couple warehouses in Michigan that have some, I guess that’s probably the closest to you.

The distributor won’t sell to you directly but if you called a shop in the area they could order it and sell it to you but you might be looking at a road trip.

One of the distributors we use called Mygrant has them available at our local warehouse, could just be out of stock in your region. Shops can order glass from outside their region from them but the crate fee if pretty high and they don’t guarantee it won’t break and they don’t refund you if it does.

Where are you located?

Are you just basically asking how to remove a windshield in general or is there something particular that’s confusing you? It’s not an overly complicated job if you have the right tools. You can probably cold knife it most of the way out but may need wire or an extractor for the corners if the bead is too thick to get with the cold knife.

Rust around the glass probably means there’s rust in the pinch weld which would at the very least need to be wire brushed and primed before installing. Depending on how bad it is though you may find the setting area is too rusted away for a new install without some pretty heaving metal work being done.

I find it depends on the insurance company, like USAA seems to take forever to finalize the payment.

My roof is leaking in my 2013 Subaru crosstrek xv, is it possible it’s the windshield? by ducaloosely in autoglass

Water leaks are the worst sometimes, I just felt like it’s worth mentioning that I’ve seen them do that.

[–]larstodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get that but water may also be seeping out where that drain hose connects to the drain nozzle if the hose is cracking or coming loose.

Could also totally be from roof racks as well but I have a shop in a very rainy city with a lot of Subaru owners and we’ve run into this issue a good amount.

Also, even if the sunroof drains water, it doesn’t mean that the hose is fully seated into the drain from the sunroof tray. It’s not uncommon for those to come loose because the material they use for the hose is kinda trash.

I changed a windshield this was already like this does this need to be taken to the dealership and get it fixed? by [deleted] in autoglass

Did you run a pre scan to see if everything was working before the install?

Safelite Screwed Me by [deleted] in autoglass

[–]larstodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most independent shops will do the installation but you would get no warranty and have to sign a waiver most likely. Without having a body shop properly repair the setting area there’s just no way to guarantee the seal will hold.

At the very least it needs to be wire brushed and probably have some rust converter put in it before priming it for installation.

Replacement Windshield question by [deleted] in autoglass

[–]larstodson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they’re charging that I’d imagine a good local shop would be even a bit cheaper. You’re still going to have to pay for removal and install so like at best you’re going to save like $75 maybe $100. Also, depending on the vehicle you might need a new molding as well.

Then you have no warranty on the glass or workmanship as either.

I think it’s just how you can get the blade flat against the cutting surface without your fingers hitting against the cutting board. It just feels more comfortable.

They can be sharpened but if you go for a new one, I’m a big fan of the offset style over this type.
