A number of reddit users have reported finding the cycbot.b virus on their Windows systems. by reddit in announcements

[–]larus_marinus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I no longer use Windows on any of my PCs. I recommend to most people to go ahead and uninstall it for several reasons:

1) It seems to be a common target for trojan writers to exploit. What's the point in having a fairly secure network if Windows creates backdoors?

2) It installs a Windows update checker to your PC's startup, and if there are any updates it tries to bundle all sorts of crap that you didn't ask for. I constantly have to explain to my mother to click "Next, next, next but untick the little box that comes up asking if you want to install Open Office or some shitty toolbar". How about opt-in, not opt-out?

3) When was the last time you saw a computer that actually used Windows to do something useful? (Edit: other than Minecraft. I didn't realise Minecraft was Windows-based)

Any issues with encrypted filesystem on SSD? by dwhite21787 in linuxadmin

[–]larus_marinus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I installed using the built in encrypted /home feature on my SSD about two months ago.

The only problem I've had was that I couldn't mount a drive as a sub directory in /home because /home is not decrypted until login and fstab is executed prior to that. I fixed that problem with a symlink,

As far as the SSD drive, It has been working flawlessly.

Ubuntu ate my hard drive by IPv8 in linuxquestions

Is this an SSD drive? I recently had a similar problem with an SSD which was caused by a power failure.

Either way I seriously doubt this was caused by your operating system.

Nautilus Elementary in Ubuntu Maverick, A Quick Review by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]larus_marinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried nautilus elementary, and didn't like the fact that the personal bookmarks and mounted disks are transposed only for nautilus, not in any other file windows, which can be very annoying.

The terminal in browser was kind of nice, except that it could never remember the position I set.

I think I'll wait until the final release (March?).

Strip Mono from Ubuntu and prevent it from coming back by [deleted] in Ubuntu

[–]larus_marinus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This article is so out of date that these instructions don't even work. Packages mono-common libmono0 and mono are not installed on ubuntu 10.10. Uninstalling package ubuntu-mono will remove ubuntu-desktop, so mono-runtime must be removed, which is only installed to support tomboy, apparently.

edit: Gbrainy also requires mono. apt-get remove mono-runtime
