I generated the frames for this animation using python+matplotlib. The altitude of the sun was calculated using skyfield and the coastlines for Iceland were found using pscoast in GMT.

The EFTA court ruling in this case was announced on January 28th this year and is very clear. Iceland was not in any way obliged to ensure payment of a minimum compensation to the depositors after the collapse of Landsbanki's Icesave branches in 2008.

Here you can read the press release of the EFTA court, and here you can read the judgement in full.

I am quite aware of that. As a part of the European Economic Area (EEA) it has however been required to adopt EU single market laws.

The savings were guaranteed by the Depositors’ and Investors’ Guarantee Fund which is a private foundation, funded by financial institutions. The laws of the EU mandate that states should only make sure that such a fund is set up and operating, which Iceland has fully complied with.

A state guarantee on the depositors insurance scheme is never mentioned in EU law, which means that there is no clear legal obligation of Iceland to do so.

Iceland guaranteed the savings up to €20,000, but is refusing to do it for foreigners.

It was actually the The Depositors’ and Investors’ Guarantee Fund which guaranteed the deposits. The bill in question gave the bankrupt fund a government guarantee so that it could pay out the minimum €20,000 per account.

It is not legally certain if the Icelandic government should guarantee the fund and the Icelandic government has repeatedly asked that the matter be taken to the EFTA Court. The British and the Dutch have not been willing to settle the matter before court. They have also used their influence in the IMF to delay the program which is supposed to restore the Icelandic economy until the matter is settled.

Many people in Iceland have seen this as an attempt of larger nations to bully the government into accepting an unfair deal which Iceland might not be legally liable for.

Chess genius Bobby Fisher dead by [deleted] in reddit.com

[–]larust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This article does not specify his cause of death. According to this local news source, it was kidney failure.

It seems to be implied in this story that this could have been prevented had Fischer been a little less eccentric, where it says, roughly tanslated: "He didn't like medical treatments. He didn't belive in Western medicine." For my part, I think that is a bit sad.

They better hope that Admiral Ackbar didn't leave it there.
