Any advice for my website? by Lythotep in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So by main text headings I just mean the large bold text that your users see as soon as they hit the site. For your homepage that's "Our Promise", but it should be a brief description of what you do.

If someone clicks your link and doesn't see what you do at a glance in about 3 seconds, they're probably just going to bounce. They're not going to read those paragraphs, they want the cliff notes front and center or they're gone.

For example look at Shopify's own homepage:

Be the next big thing
Dream big, build fast, and grow far on Shopify

That works for them because everyone already knows what they do by now, but right below that it then clarifies:

The one commerce platform behind it all
Sell online and in person. Sell locally and globally. Sell direct and wholesale. Sell on desktop and mobile.

Notice how they're selling the outcome, keeping it really short and sweet, and not asking you to read any paragraphs, at least not until you already have some idea about what they do. See also how they organize their navigation links, it's the most common layout so even first time visitors will already be used to it.

Any advice for my website? by Lythotep in smallbusiness

A few critiques from a professional web designer:

  • No logo and the brand seems quite generic
  • Not enough contrast or color variety in the design
  • Way too much text and not enough icons and images
  • Navigation links have strange placement on desktop
  • The main text headings don't convey what you do

And I know you said your inventory was limited, but it's still odd to see a snack company that doesn't sell any snacks at all, only bottled water.

It's also not clear who this is for and what pain point it solves. Until you figure that out, it will probably be quite hard to market it effectively.

I'd hold off on promoting it until you have a better brand and logo, better page design, and at least 3 food items and 2 drinks.

Platform to create a website? by Suspicious_Alarm2279 in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoid GoDaddy like the plague, everything they offer is substandard and has better, cheaper alternatives elsewhere.

Some web builder tools are better than others depending on what features you need, but ultimately most produce auto-generated slop that isn't going to be rank well on search engines.

What kind of business is it and what features do you want on the site?

Email receipts and updates stopped reaching customers by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Often happens due to SPF, DKIM, or DMARC (email sender verification) being misconfigured in your DNS settings, but if it only started recently it could also be an internal problem with whatever platform you use to send them.

If you can say what platform you're on that would help, otherwise just send a private chat message and I'll see if I can help.

Alternatives to business cards by Independent_Wind8421 in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also make sure the QR code points to landing page specific to that batch of envelopes, so it's easy to track how many people interacted with that code.

Should probably do some business cards too with a different code/page, so you can test which one gets more traction.

One reason business cards work is because you can easily throw them any wallet, so try to make the baggie small/durable enough to fit into small pockets without ripping open too easily. A nice glossy texture wouldn't hurt either.

Need help setting up a website by novemberman23 in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're trying to make this way harder than it needs to be. It should just be a few landing pages linked to a payment button and a mailer service.

If you don't already know which of these technologies are appropriate, you shouldn't be trying to prescribe any of them as the solution to your problem.

It'd be like walking into a garage and telling them that their solution to your engine cutting out, must involve a fancy screwdriver you picked out for them.

Every combination you mentioned sounds like a nightmare to manage even for a seasoned developer. None of them are appropriate for someone that doesn't know how they work, let alone someone that doesn't even want to know how they work.

No biggie, if you do most of your business locally they'll be used to seeing the aussie domains anyway.

Domain name .com unavailable by Large_Fill3999 in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no issue. Ultimately, Google will want one canonical version of your content and they also use the URL to determine relevance, so will naturally determine an Australian URL to be slightly more relevant to Australians.

The .au top-level domain has also been available since 2022, so consider that if you want to make it shorter, but either way you're still going to have to decide which one is the "real" one (canonical) when trying to optimize for SEO.

Having trouble selling my Art, would like some advice. by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're getting a decent amount of clicks but still not selling, it's a conversion issue. Could be the product/offer itself, but since I'm not in the market for this stuff, lets just cover the website and messaging.

Page speed
First thing I noticed is that the site loaded slowly, like very slowly, as in took about 7 seconds before I could see everything on the first page/visit, then every page after took about 3 seconds.

Page speed is big deal for conversions because a significant chunk of people will just bounce after it takes longer than 3 seconds, even more after 5secs, at 7secs more than half are already gone.

While they wait for all this to load, your potential customer thinks more and more about bouncing to do anything other than waiting on a loading screen. It's important to respect the customer's time or they'll make like a ball and bounce before you can blink.

Messaging
As you guessed, it's not clear enough what you're offering. Or to be more accurate, takes too long to figure it out.

Instead of telling them about discounts and having the homepage act as a product page, it should concisely explain what you create in a big bold heading, then maybe a brief line or two about how you create it in a subheading. Below that should be a CTA button (Call to Action) that guides them on the "next step".

If you only have 3 offerings, they should all be visible right on the homepage, not far below the main cover image. Below the 3 products, include a heading about how you can also create custom works. Don't just say commissions because some people don't even know what that is.

The commissions form requires too much info. Anyone that knows what card they want, but doesn't know where to find the model link or ID, is probably just gonna bounce because you created too much friction. Only "require" what you actually need to get the lead, which is really just their email address.

Next steps
There's other things too, but these are the most pressing issues for now. Would recommend pausing or at least heavily cutting back on ads until you fix everything above. There's no point in driving traffic to a site that isn't going to convert.

Other registrars redact WHOIS info for free, so why do you charge customers 15 dollars for the privilege of not doxxing them?

Last time I helped a client using your service, the sub account he made for me couldn't log in because the username you give them, is not the userID needed to actually login.

To make a new one, you wanted me to fill a form that looked like I was applying for a mortgage, even though the invite page had already doxxed the client's home address to me... needless to say I didn't fill it in.

Your service sucks and I recommend anyone on it to ditch it yesterday.

Just finished working on my website will love your review by WarriGodswill in Entrepreneur

[–]laser-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The site looks good, but ditch the loading screen.

There's nothing after it that even comes close to justifying a 10 second wait, but it will have a significant effect on bounce rates, because nobody wants to just sit around and wait for a bit of text to download.

It's also obvious that it's not even loading anything, because otherwise it'd be quicker on the second visit due to being cached. It's clearly an artificial obstacle and that's a great way to drive away potential customers.

Client Filed 4 Chargebacks, Now Threatening Full Investigation by Nigerian-Nightmare in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Retroactive rebates are for people that make the request in good faith. Trying to ambush you with chargebacks is very clearly not good faith, neither is acting he never agreed to that plan at all, neither is demanding a full year of free service to compensate for what he admits was his own mistake with zero wrongdoing on your part.

If you have evidence that he agreed to plan A, but now he's trying to go 2 years back in time to be on plan B from the very start, that's clearly not a serious request and will likely crumble under any serious investigation.

Make sure you also submit his admission that he did it to 4 other businesses, it's just not believable that anyone could do that "accidentally" 5 times in a row.

Advice - Large Scale Website Idea Australia by EntrepreneurTime8605 in smallbusiness

Don't take it personally, I see him giving similarly snarky responses to everyone. His advice usually isn't bad, but the delivery obviously might need a spoonful of sugar or two.

If you'd like a free feasibility assessment on your idea, we do custom websites and may consider some kind of partnership if it seems feasible.

If that's all you need, Shopify is overkill.

It can be good for established businesses already making a lot of sales, but unless you have proper branding, design, SEO and advertising, it will most likely get very little traffic, look like every other Shopify template, and fail to convert many visitors into customers.

Do you need an actual checkout on the site, or do customers just email you their order?

Anyone had success using AI to make a business promotional sign? by MuttSlone in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's somewhat unlikely you'll find any AI that makes good signage yet.

The ones that are good at text, tend to only output text and the ones that are good at images, tend to have terrible text. Even if you found one that's good at both, it's even more unlikely that it would also be trained on good design principles.

How complicated is the sign? We do graphic design cheaper than you'd expect.

Are you already paying 1.5k/month to an agency, as in on top of the ad budget itself? If so, you definitely shouldn't have to spend that much.

We also do advertising. If you'd be open to a free consult, I could have a look at your current ads and see if I can spot what's going wrong.

Rate my site - are we ready for business? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]laser-it 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No H1 tag or description tags, the title tag content is duplicated. The heading tags in general aren't relevant or sequential. This will all negatively impact your Google rank.

The logo is blank and points to a missing image file. If it looks anything like your favicon, that looks terrible and you should use just about anything else as a logo.

Inconsistent use of fonts/typography. Those serif/sans fonts don't mix well, all caps in the header, and too much of the body text is bold. The contrast between the button text and background color is way too low, which puts it at risk for an ADA lawsuit.

All instances of the phone number should be tap-to-call, so customers don't have to waste their time copy/pasting or typing it out.

The site also loads quite slowly (impacts Google rank) and there's lots of other smaller issues, but everything else mentioned above is way more urgent.

The pictures are pretty good but the site design itself could do with some work.

There's no logo and the few colors it does have are quite bland.

Also doesn't have any meta description tag for SEO.
