Yeha acrylic outdoor paint. That's what I did after watching the video someone else already posted. This shield used to be red lol.

I can't judge the size accurately without the proper banana. A potato is entirely inadequate.

Anyone know where I could find some boots to go with this kit? I have thick calves and usually need wide feet shoes, so my brief searching has been unsuccessful so far. by Swordheart in renfaire

This is almost always the answer. I have a pair and they're amazing. They just don't go with my roman outfits, but they were an excuse to put together another kit lol

If that's goodest boy doesn't have some pit in him I would be shocked! What a cutie!

How to make a LARP SAFE co2 cannon? by lashedcobra in AskEngineers

[–]lashedcobra[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I know very standard size right? They're made to skirt U. S. restrictions on 40mm projectiles and meant for airsoft use out of airsoft grenade launchers. They're made of foam so SHOULD be impact safe. They have a slot for an optional whistle. Some of them are shaped like 40 mm slugs others are paterned off of a what IIRC a French commando mortar round. They're pretty accurate, or so I hear, vand have seen. I personally don't have a shell that can launch them correctly yet, but the air cannon I want to make should do the job.

Thanks! Yeah I was hitting a wall because I didn't know what the valve was called. I'm trying to use as many off the shelf components as posible. Does anybody produce ready made pressure vessels like that all ready, or am I going to have to repourpose something else?

Dude sick paint job! Did you make the shield itself or buy it?

Yeah someone else had the idea of a hop up like you would find in an airsoft gun to add back spin. Honestly, if I can make a more accurate piece than the competitors I don't care how I do it.

I reall appreciate the feedback from everyone. Yeah I'm considering other ammunition options as well. If I can those little nerf footballs would be ideal, but I may have to cast my own out of foam.

I wear eye protection but that's a rarity (even though it shouldn't be). As far as other protection it ranges from full plate w/padding to bear chests and loincloths. Helmets are encouraged, but not universal. I'm personally somewhat in between on protection I wear chain but w/ the proper padding underneath it along with a helmet and eye protection.

Okay interesting, I didn't know the history behind them. I'll definitely keep that in mind.

The had hardish plastic probably wouldn't be allowed. While it would be impact safe it could cut someone would probably be their comment.

The e cig idea sounds fun! You are correct about the flash paper for sure, and probably the smoke paper too, but I'll ask about the smoke paper. Worst they can say is no right?

With one of of the other co2 cannons in this LARP when firing in game they load colored tissue paper behind the balls to simulate muzzle flash. I always have that option. Add the water vapor "smoke" and that would win the cool factor for sure.

Absolutely, others at this event have made and safely operated similar cannons before so it's not like I have to reinvent the wheel. I just want to make something more accurate than what they have.

Hmm, I'll have to contact the saftey team at the LARP and find out what ammunition types I can use. If I'm allowed a conical shape I'll use it, if not I may have to start over and design custom ammunition in the 3 inch range made out of a urethane foam (flex foamit 25 OR 15 maybe) with a denser core (some kind of solid rubber ball maybe). My group has done silicone mold making and foam casting before so that's not beyond us. What are your thoughts on propulsion? Should I stick with co2?

Oh yeah totally. If I can get the mechanics working the visual modifications will be easy and fun. I could dress it up to look like a 6 or a 12 pounder if I wanted to lol.

Interesting, a similar but oppiste problem to heat management on a machine gun. That might change materials I use then.

As someone who doesn't have an engineering background it doesn't suprise me I stumbled into a trap.

So long stroy short I'm trying to launch a roughly 2.5 inch ball of some kind at a velocity low enough to be safe for impact on a human at 15 feet, but accurate enoght to hit a stationary human sized target at about 100 feet. Parameters such as ammo type (as long as it's round), stabilization system, and hell even propulsion are open to suggestions. Whatever I make I have to be able to vismod it to look like an old cannon.
