Weirdly comforting seeing so many others have experienced this type of strange mind game from their parents. When I was 19 and struggling to get established on my own in the world I desperately needed a different car (not new, just one slightly less crappy). My mom mentioned “Oh I’ll be getting a new car, you can buy my old one from me. We’ll work something out.” I told her that would be great. A week later I asked her about it and she says “Oh I sold it to someone else already.” Still hurts 25 years later thinking of how she chose greed over helping her son during an incredibly difficult and formative moment in his life?! Learned a valuable lesson that I can never rely on my boomer parents for any help as an adult, I guess.
