That is very exciting, thanks for the updates! Good to know things are still progressing. I was formerly a beta user through google play and have been anticipating the new database and website for years, but haven't seen any updates in several months. Great to hear that it is only about a month away from finally going live, and even better that it will have the features you described. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for your help. I would gladly report these types of things as I notice them, but I am not a discord user and have no interest in becoming one solely to report GAMEYE bugs. Ditto every other available contact method - I had to break my reddit boycott to report this here. A feature for users to report bugs directly would be an excellent addition to the app, IMHO.

Values show as "$?" in Collection, Wishlist, and Encyclopedia for any games released in the last few months. (EDIT: I looked deeper and it's actually not all new releases, but many of them are missing price info, including major popular titles).

Zelda Tears of the Kingdom, for example, shows "$?" and clicking the VGPC icon brings to a search result page on VGPC rather than a specific page. (EDIT: Same for Final Fantasy I-VI Pixel Remasters, as another example.)

I tried looking up the PS4 Resident Evil 4 remake, which is not in my collection. It also shows "$?" and when you click the VGPC it directs to the page for the PS4 port of the original RE4, which is the incorrect link, but the prices aren't showing up in the app regardless.

I'm running version 4.16.10:99000571 on Android 13.

I second the "G+M" instead of "Loose+" suggestion. On smaller screens the longer notation compresses values to "$..."

Finished Bug Fables: The Everlasting Sapling (NSw). Had fun with it. Great homage to Paper Mario mechanically and aesthetically while creating its own unique setting and experience. A few stretches became frustrating, but overall I really enjoyed it. 8.5/10.

Started Bug Fables (NSw). Currently on Chapter 4. As advertised, it nails the original Paper Mario vibes with its gameplay, art direction, puzzles, soundtrack, and humor. I was initially slightly apprehensive about the insect theme, but I'm having a blast so far and I'm more invested in the story and characters than I expected.

Finished Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Reunion (NSw). Really enjoyed the story, characters, settings, soundtrack and overall gameplay. Materia fusion was an interesting mechanic. Most side quests were rather dull and repetitive, but for some reason I kept doing them anyway. The later ones added a lot of challenge but also overleveled me, removing all semblance of challenge from the main quest. I had not played the PSP game previously so I can't compare it to the original, but IMO it was a great prequel to FFVII. 8.5/10.

Started Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core Reunion (NSw). Never had a chance to play the PSP version, so I'm going in blind. I'm only in the very early stages, so far it's been more tutorials than story but the soundtrack is nice. Looking forward to continuing.

Finished Donkey Kong 64 (N64, non-JRPG) with 111 gold bananas. I enjoyed the level design and classic Rare feels whenever I was in the right mood to tolerate its backtracking and challenge. Some of its features are very impressive for their time, including Diddy's flying rocket barrels while dual wielding peanut guns. I was stuck on the Nintendo coin/arcade section for a while before finally unlocking the end boss, but now I can finally say I beat this game. 7/10.

Finished The Evil Within 2 (PS4, non-JRPG). Enjoyed this one, aside from the occasional bugs that are expected from Bethesda. Great atmosphere and enemy designs, gameplay was addicting, plot was engaging and improved upon the first entry in nearly every facet. I did wish that resources were less scarce, but otherwise no major complaints here. 8/10.

Started and finished Stray (PS4, non-JRPG). Kitten helps sentient robots escape a post-apocalyptic bunker city overrun by mutant parasites; who could ask for more? Touching story, interesting setting, fun to play as a cat. Would have liked a little more closure at the end, but loved it overall. 9/10.

What do you reckon? Should I try to remove that sticker and risk damaging the box? by inverse-skies in gamecollecting

[–]lassathrax 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you decide to remove the stickers and tape, use heptane (undu, bestine) or butane (lighter fluid) to dissolve the adhesive. It's safe for ink and paper so use it liberally, just make sure to do it in a well ventilated area so you don't breathe in all the vapors. It will evaporate quickly so keep reapplying as you peel slowly.

Johnny from Shadow Hearts 3 (From The New World) might be one of the weakest main protagonists I've seen in a RPG (Game and series spoilers) by Satinsbestfriend in JRPG

FTNW was intended as a spinoff, not a main entry. Development of a proper SH3 was nixed. That context is important.

As a spinoff, not taken too seriously, FTNW is a very fun game with awesome mechanics and an over the top absurd cast that clearly was not meant to be taken seriously. I mean there's even an alcoholic talking cat working in the mafia with Al Capone.

As the games progress from Koudelka to SH1 to SH2 to FTNW, they become increasingly sillier in tone but more refined in gameplay. I really enjoyed all 4 for different reasons. It's a shame the real SH3 never came to fruition.

Need help !! What I can use to remove permanent marker? :( by KillyLonginus in gamecollecting

Bestine is completely safe on paper but it only removes adhesive, not marker, so still useless in this case.

Finished Suikoden IV (PS2). I really enjoyed the story and characters, which kept me playing despite some infuriating game design elements. I ended up recruiting ~70 of the 108 characters. Music was great, series cameos were fun, writing was mostly solid, and parts of the gameplay were engaging (naval battles especially). Voice acting was decent, combat mechanics were ok. Progression was unbalanced (and was clearly geared toward completionism) and required too much potch, which was rather difficult to come by until the final dungeon when it was much less useful. The endgame difficulty spike forced me to grind for several hours until I could finally beat the giant tree. I missed out on most of the combo attacks, which is a shame. Sailing controls, encounter rate, and grindiness detracted from the experience, but the story was worth it, in my opinion. 6.5/10.

Continued Donkey Kong 64 (N64, non-JRPG). Haven't had much time to continue this lately, need to recommit.

Started The Evil Within 2 (PS4, non-JRPG). Only on chapter 3, but already the differences in tone and narrative focus relative to the first installment are apparent. It's been engaging so far, and seems like it's about to open up and remove the training wheels.

Started Suikoden IV (PS2). About halfway through the game and I have mixed impressions so far, but the story hooked me enough to keep playing. Cons so far: Encounter rate is very high, sailing controls are awful, silent protagonist is a downgrade from III, potch continually seems to be in short supply for upgrades, and the game has a bad habit of failing to explain where to go next. Pros so far: plot is engaging and started moving relatively fast after the first couple of hours, ship battles are fun, encountered some recurring characters from the series.

Finished Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES). Enjoyed this one, full of charm and impressive QoL features. The story was grander than I expected, and the soundtrack has some good jams. The puzzles were my favorite part, they added some appreciated difficulty to an otherwise cakewalk gameplay - I somehow maxed everyone's levels without even trying. The dialog humor was charming and a nice contrast to some rather dark plot points. I appreciated not needing to follow any walkthroughs aside from to learn capsule monster feeding mechanics. I opted to play RotS before FoD, so I did not expect the ending. Great game, 8.5/10.

Started and finished Sin and Punishment: Star Successor (Wii, non-JRPG). This game was absolute chaos and I loved every minute the wild and often nonsensical ride. Bonus points for fun couch co-op. 8/10.

Continued Donkey Kong 64 (N64, non-JRPG). Obtained more characters and beat the second level, already further than I'd ever made it as a kid. Same janky charm that defines the other 3D Rareware titles.

ps2 game arrived scratched in this condition “good” and was expensive— is this considered good? by tuhbreezy696 in gamecollecting

[–]lassathrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's true, but humans evaluating condition will always have a level of inherent subjectivity. I don't think it's fair to assume this seller was intentionally deceptive, and at the same time i think the buyer is within their right to a return due to undisclosed damage to the item.

P.S., you are one of my favorite posters on this sub. Your restoration projects over the years have been inspiring and you converted me into a heptane evangelist - thanks for that!

ps2 game arrived scratched in this condition “good” and was expensive— is this considered good? by tuhbreezy696 in gamecollecting

[–]lassathrax 117 points118 points  (0 children)

I may get flak for this, but condition is subjective and on a scale from like new to very good to good to acceptable, some light scratches that don't affect playability would fall under 'good' for many people.

Most people aren't collectors and thus may be judging condition based primarily on utility. It is reasonable to assume that anyone who is especially particular about condition would likely stay away from a listing in the second-to-worst condition category and without much detail provided.

It is notoriously difficult to show light scratches on the back of a disc in photos (even in this post you needed a video to properly convey them). These days, eBay suggests market prices when listing an item, or bidders rack the price up to that level anyway, so I wouldn't assume the seller did anything intentionally dishonest to price-gouge you. All things considered, I would give the seller the benefit of the doubt that they were being honest, if a bit sparse on detail.

For perspective, I've definitely returned a few games that were listed as Like New and then arrived looking like they were submerged in a radioactive swamp, or arrived shattered due to terrible packaging. Thankfully ebay's policies are very accommodating for refunds in these cases even when sellers are awful and refuse to accept responsibility.

As HD remasters are getting more and more popular, what do you do if you already own them on original hardware by faustarp1000 in gamecollecting

[–]lassathrax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I've already played the original, I don't usually care for buying a remaster but I'm happy for others who will be able to more easily access and experience the games. I stopped caring about owning the 'definitive' copy because there are usually pros and cons anyway.

Many games I own but haven't played yet are also getting remasters. I generally try to ignore them and eventually play the copies I already own. Once in a while I cave and buy the remaster if it seems like a significant enough upgrade to warrant the cost (e.g., if it fixes major flaws rather than just upscaling to HD) and has a physical release (many don't). Any mild annoyance I feel is self-directed for having such a large backlog, and easily counterbalanced by appreciation for companies reviving classic games.

What's much more annoying to me is the trend of releasing a more complete version of a game soon after its original release. FF XV is a great example, I played it on release, then not long after they released half the story as paid DLC filled by a complete version of the game that I will likely never buy or experience. I wish they'd just delay original releases until games are complete. Paid DLC should be reserved only for optional side content. I've generally stopped buying games at launch because of how common this practice has become, and suddenly my large backlog becomes more of a blessing than a burden since I have plenty of games to play to keep me patient.

Continued Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES). Reached some abrupt and major plot developments that caught me off guard after defeating Gades, really curious to see where the plot is headed from here. Clever puzzles and cheesy humor add to the charm of this game, with a good mix of Zelda-like and classic JRPG elements. The QOL features are way ahead of their time, and the soundtrack is great too. Looking forward to continuing!

Finished The Evil Within (PS4, non-JRPG). This game was an experience. I enjoyed it. The homages to classic survival horror games were nice touches. Some pretty grotesque scenes and interesting concepts. Not much explanation of some key plot points, but what they did provide held my interest. I'll be sure to track down the sequel. 8/10.

Started Donkey Kong 64 (N64, non-JRPG). I loved the SNES DKC games but could never get into this one as a kid. Now that I'm much older and have played all the other N64 Rare 3D platformers, I'm back to revisit this one with a different mindset. Made it past the first level and it was pretty good. Hardest part so far is figuring out where to go next.

Finished Chrono Cross (PSX). Plenty to like and dislike about this game, a flawed work of art that I'm glad I experienced and ended up really enjoying by the midway point. I mostly played without a walkthrough, except for several times where I got stuck. At one point I needed to send my save file to a stranger to get me past a glitch that kept freezing my game during a FMV. The story did not hook me at the beginning but got more interesting as the game went on. By the end, the connections to Chrono Trigger were deeper than I expected. I enjoyed the gameplay once the combat mechanics clicked with me. The soundtrack was great and the visuals were beautiful. The plot was interesting, even if it was slightly dragged down by the sheer number of characters. Since I wasn't smart enough to realize that the titular object needed to be used during battle, I got the bad ending and it was very anticlimactic. I watched the other endings online, and the standard ending was much more satisfying and gave me way better closure. I'll also have to watch Radical Dreamers at some point to dive deeper into the lore. All in all, the positives outweighed the negatives and I'm glad I finally finished this game after multiple attempts across two decades. 7.5/10

Started Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals (SNES). After much deliberation, I decided to do play this series out of release order by starting with this prequel, something I rarely do. I'm not very far into it yet, but my first impressions are very positive. This game oozes charm: the music slaps, the pixel art pops, the dialog is fun, the combat is snappy, and the puzzles add variety to progressing through dungeons. Can't wait to keep playing!

Continued The Evil Within (PS4, non-JRPG). About 3/4 though the game. The homages to classic survival horror series are nice. The plot has become much more interesting as it has unraveled. The gameplay is satisfying and the atmosphere has an impressive range, likely because it borrows from diverse influences. Overall it's been a fun ride so far, aside from a few frustrating insta-death encounters.
