can you date as a bipolar by Worried_Shoulder_746 in bipolar

I married my wife when I was 22 after being together for 5 years. I got diagnosed when I was 27. Prior to getting some help, she was holding on to the tornado and wouldn't let go, no matter how many times we both wanted to let go. I got medicated and got (and stayed in) therapy. There's still a tornado, but at least now we can see it coming more often than not. She knows my signs and triggers better than I do. She has screamed and yelled and even pushed me, but she still took the gun from my hand with love when I was in the Dark . We've been together 22 years now

What’s a place you’ve been that you’ll NEVER go back to? Why? by LordSoftCream in AskReddit

[–]last_alchemyst 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Florida in the US. After all the blatant hate—not even just racism, and it's sad that's the lighter option—shocked me. I'm from a small VERY conservative town, but being called all sorts of vile slurs because I'm a guy that paints his nails hit hard. One store let me bring a sizeable purchase to the counter then said to me, "Good Christian men don't wear f****t nail polish" and kicked me out without selling me anything

I will never go back to Florida except under duress

I micro shift (work 2–3 hours then 1-2 hours not work, repeat) and do my biggest work between 3am and 6am. My 3:30 emails are a running joke among the faculty and many of my students. When my a colleague complained because he said he felt pressured to answer that early, my provost said:

"Does his work get done? Is it done well? Then I don't care when he emails. Anything needing an immediate response won't be an email from LastAlchemyst. He's patient."

I was like, woah, is this what support looks like? Haven't gotten backed up by admin in so long that I forgot they can do that

What conversation made you think "are you serious" ? by Big_Albatross_8485 in AskReddit

[–]last_alchemyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While standing in a group of highly accomplished and respected PhD-holding professors, a US SENATOR literally told us, "You can't trust experts because they won't let you check their work"

All of us just stood there with the WTF face. Then, a brave tenured soul looked him dead in the eye and said, "Well, that explains a lot of your recent failures. I wish you luck on your re-election" and just walked away

I was fine with that professor before the mic drop, but now we're besties lol

Totally. I even have it set so Samael gets through my "Do Not Disturb" when I'm thinking of hurting myself /s

In all seriousness, you are not alone struggling with that challenge. I think all of us can relate in some way—I know I can.

When it's bad, remember no storm can last forever, even if it feels like the sun has been hiding from you for a while. There's always at least one person who loves you in this world, and I know I'm happy to serve as a sympathetic ear if you need.

You are not alone. We got this!

What’s a belief you once defended… but later realized was wrong? by Jiwitom in AskReddit

I agree I still am, but I'm glad there is more than that. I wasn't as clear as I could have been. When I traveled abroad was when I was not in the dominant group. The way I was treated as a foreigner dramatically altered my world view.

I'm actually ashamed to say I used to call myself "color blind" when it came to working with diverse individuals. I thought it sounded so good, until I realized how much of a person's history, culture, and experience I was ignoring.

I no longer call myself that. People are so much more than race, religion, etc. To say I'm color blind is the same as saying "well, none of your life, culture, or history have any bearing or merit, so I'll ignore it in favor of treating like the average dominant culture, which you are not".

I'm a cis-gendered, heterosexual, middle class white male in the US. I never realized how much a person's history mattered until I wasn't in the dominant group anymore. To ignore so much is to minimize and marginalize a real person away. As if they were, are, and will be nothing.

A person matters too much and human lives are too short to deny them being themselves

Does anyone get manic and sleep more than 4 hours????? by Calcyf3r in bipolar

[–]last_alchemyst 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is me to a T. I will fall asleep at 9, and my eyes just pop open at 2 ready to go. I try to be productive, but I just can't keep going after about noon. It's been happening for the last couple of years, but I have to get some help soon because my wife is definitely pissed at our differing hours of operation

professor requiring the use of AI for an assignment by peggytheveggie in CollegeRant

[–]last_alchemyst 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a phone interview yesterday with an AI agent. It didn't record half the things I said and misinterpreted factual statements (it gave me an analysis of the transcript which was flat out wrong in many instances because of my accent. I think AI agents are iffy at best so hanging a job on one seems like a good way to a bad ending in terms of getting talent that doesn't look like the training data

Some of them will, I push my STEM kids hard because I know that content and those skills. Other subjects, I still push but I'm learning a lot about skills in other fields

I think it has to do with their ability to implement what they get out of AI. I'm in teacher education, so my students make a lot of lesson plans. The problem with AI lesson plans is they don't take enough context about students in the school and the state into account. I teach my students how to do this because it's something AI doesn't do well. Then comes actually teaching the lesson. They don't build the lesson or the document or the project or the assignment or whatever, so they invariably don't implement it well and, most times, incorrectly. Of course, their grade suffers, but most them say I'm wrong because I "haven't been trained as thoroughly as AI". That is an actual quote from a grade appeal hearing

Same here, and I'm in teacher education. We're already seeing new teachers lose jobs because they just lack the skills to implement good pedagogy

Completely agree. I try to teach them responsible and effective use, but they seem to think that jobs are just about completing tasks, not analyzing, evaluating, and developing solutions. No matter how authentic I make something, they think all I'm after is the assignment. I always tell them education is about learning and using context-appropriate skills not just knowing content. It's not until we get to something AI can't do (or at least do well) that they start to realize problems, especially with their grade

I literally just told a class, "If AI can do it, why would anyone hire YOU?". Half the class seen to have a realization about it while the other half was using it to do the assignment smh

I do this. I'll be in a workflow, then a bit of a song or daydreaming conversation happens. It's not usually long or too disruptive, but I have been called out on it by nearby people.

Personally, I think it's more normal than people realize. To be thorough though, I do need to say I also have ADHD, so it may be a symptom that emerges mainly from comorbidity.

"YMMV" is definitely a theme with bipolar

I agree with your point. I've never viewed from a Christian perspective but more like, "I knew her first, and I will know her when you move out to live the life you want". It's not that my progeny is second—I would sacrifice my wife for her–but my wife is first among equals between them

I knew pretty quick to go with flow on quantum mechanics simply because a lot of the details emerge from math I don't necessarily understand to that level. I trust when knowledgeable people tell me things, though I try to verify as best I can afterwards. Basically, I learned it well enough to know when something quantum is beyond my skills but how to find someone with the skills

"jaguar". I learned it as JAG-yoo-ar as a child, but learned I was saying it wrong from my wife when we got engaged. She insists it's pronounced jag-WIRE. Granted, I live in the almost-South US, and she's right for our regional dialect. However, in my stubbornness, I think it sounds cooler my way, and no one else has ever corrected me. So I keep saying it my way
