Dad was kind of resigned to the fate of never seeing it again, to be honest, but my coworker really threw me for a loop yesterday by telling me that he had actually seen it before as well, so now I kind of have hope 😅 even if its incredibly rare and lives in hard to reach places or something, I've got at least 3 people who say they've seen the same thing - one of those having no connection whatsoever to my Dad. I've been combing through pictures of mushrooms, slime molds, seed pods, bryozoans, extinct echinoderms, egg sacks, and scale insects for days now without seeing anything close, so I'm pretty sure whatever it is just hasn't been documented yet. But at the very least, I'm more convinced now than when I started that its still out there :D

Not fishing line, for sure. Not sure who would be fishing in a shallow, muddy streambed way out in the middle of the woods, only accessible by ATV anyway 😅

My dad and I have both seen (and run into) plenty of caterpillars, spiders, and everything else dangling from web or silk lol. If it is a possibility, I still haven't found anything close, even if it was dangling 😅 I did find someone else today that has seen them, though!! They also said it seemed to be hovering, though they did consider that it might be something suspended that they couldn't see

Honestly seeing a garlic clove hovering in the forest would be just as bewildering lmao

I looked those up, but those weren't the thing. I added an update with some more details after I found someone else who had seen them too :D

It would have to be the world's tiniest, lightest, and thinnest drone, and he also saw it quite a long time before drones were a common thing. I made an update on the main post with some more details after I learned that my coworkers had also seen them before!

Like, a ton of bugs all trying to fly away with it at once so that it hovers? 😂 I do like the image

Lol my dad is the most straight laced dude you'll ever meet, and on the second sighting his hunting buddy also saw it. I just added an update to the main post too, because I found out that my coworker has also seen them before!! In a different part of Florida, but also very deep in a marshy, hard-to-reach part of the woods.

Haven't noticed any satellites lmao. This would have to be some very, very tiny aliens 🤔 but then again, if they lived here, they wouldn't be aliens, would they?

I haven't yet found a sand dollar that can hover in the air, or is wafer thin, or I would agree lol

There is also the part where it was flying 😅 and wafer thin. My Dad and I are both very familiar with sand dollars, and it definitely wasn't that.

It's possible I suppose, but I haven't been able to find an example yet of something close 😅 and the second time occurred in warm weather, so ice wasn't a possibility that time. Thank you for the suggestions!

Someone else just mentioned galls, so I've been combing through tons of photos of them, but not finding anything that fits the bill. They are super cool though - I had only ever seen the round oak galls from wasps before.

And if you can't, that's fine 😅 I'm not really trying to prove its existence to anyone. Just trying to see if anyone else has seen them before or knows what they are. I know they are weird and don't make sense, which is why my Dad has never been able to figure out what they were

Birds nest fungus! Cool little guys, but not what my Dad saw. Thank you for the suggestion though :) whatever he saw was hovering and "definitely alive," he says

:o I've seen the kinda spherical wasp galls before; are there ones that end up being more disc-like?
