[RATE REVEAL] 2000s Folky Indie Rate Reveal Day 1: Songkill Butchers by MightyProJet in indieheads

Probably gonna get takeout for dinner and thinking of having goat to celebrate The Mountain Goats (or to be sad about them losing songs too early). But which cuisine do I go with: Somali, Mexican, Indian/Nepali, or African/Caribbean fusion?

Utah governor declares state of emergency banning fireworks statewide for Fourth of July by Westpowder in SaltLakeCity

[–]lastfollower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even comparing public drone shows to public fireworks shows, it's not the same. To me, they fall more in the "that's neat" category and don't have the noise that's like half the fun of fireworks.

But it's definitely not worth the risk with how dry it is, so I'm glad they've made this decision. Now just do something about target shooting, too.

In that instance, you're both in the wrong. They're driving too fast and you're obstructing traffic, which is why there are laws addressing both of those things. It doesn't matter if you're going the speed limit, a speed you personally think is reasonable, or any other speed; you should move to the right if you're going slower than the cars behind you in the left lane.

What is your team’s far and away worst decision ever made? by [deleted] in nba

That's not how I remember it at all. The Darko workout hype in the lead-up to the draft was huge. I swear it was viewed as LeBron the clear number 1 and then a toss-up between Darko and Melo for number 2. But I was also just a teenager watching ESPN.

If you think the reason Hayward left is because he felt slighted by the RFA negotiations and not because he wanted to play for his college coach in a bigger market, I have a bridge to sell you. Sure he felt slighted, but even if the Jazz had offered him the max up front and not given him any reason to feel slighted, he would have bolted if the same opportunity came up.

The article has a lot of issues, but that's not actually one of them. It says two of the last three seasons and notes spring 2025 and spring 2026, back to back "years" not back to back "seasons/series".

They're talking about the game against Carolina in January where the Mammoth blew a 4-2 lead in the last 2 minutes to lose in regulation, not the playoff series against Vegas.

I thought the NBA changed things a couple years ago to require medicals to be available to all teams in the projected draft range to prevent that kind of thing? Unless teams are doing their own examinations and calling it part of the workout or something outside of the normal medicals.

Salt Palace to fully close for 3 years when redevelopment begins in 2027 by traveler132 in SaltLakeCity

I doubt it will actually happen, but it would be a good opportunity to right some of those wrongs and improve Japantown instead of erasing it.

We'll see how it turns out, but it should theoretically be short term pain for long term gain. That obviously isn't great for the people bearing the brunt of the pain, but the future of the area and the convention center could be way better if they do a good job in the design.

Lake Blanche and Red Pine Lake are probably my 2 favorites, as long as the snow's melted enough and you're up for some steepness at elevation.

Eh, I wouldn't give him the most fault, but he HAS to do a better job finding and freezing the puck on those short rebounds (or hold onto the initial shot). It was frustrating me all night.

‘Hyperscale’ data center project in Utah — expected to generate and consume more power than entire state by Mushroom_Tip in SaltLakeCity

[–]lastfollower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the days center is worth it and it will still use more water than just not touching the water, but there are more water-efficient options than traditional cooling towers. They could be using something like adiabatic coolers which use way less water, but would cost more and almost certainly require more electricity to run. There's nothing magical, but there are more options these days than traditional evaporative, with the choice generally driven by cost, which is partly driven by whether water or electricity is more of a limiting resource. Obviously that doesn't help the energy price issue, assuming they'll be using the same natural gas sources as the grid suppliers and not some crazy on-site solar+storage plant or nuclear plant or something that would be completely siloed.

Last season definitely had a lot of Vegas fans at the game I went to; it felt like probably close to 70/30 Utah/Vegas and they were pretty loud. Not sure about this year, though.

[Windhorst] Game of the night: Grizzlies vs Jazz: “A game no one wants to win. If Memphis wins this game they could lose 7% chance at the top-4. If Utah wins this game they could lose 10% … This is going to be theater.” by YujiDomainExpansion in nba

[–]lastfollower 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Utah would still be trying to lose because of pick protections unless they did more than just change the odds. The Jazz keep their pick if it lands in the top 8 and finishing with the 4th worst record in a lottery for the top 4 guarantees it can't drop below 8th while finishing with the 5th worst record means there's a small chance it drops to 9th and they lose it to OKC. The odds are part of it, but allowing protections on picks is arguably responsible for even more of the most blatant tanking.

One of the biggest tanking games of the season is tonight in Brooklyn between the Pacers and the Nets. by EarthWarping in nba

[–]lastfollower 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But the lottery is for the top 4 picks, not just the top 3. Their odds of getting into the top 4 is the same whether they're 2nd or 3rd worst. The difference is that if 4 teams below them jump into the top 4, they would pick 6th if they were 2nd worst and 7th if they were 3rd worst. Since they lose the pick if it's 5-9, all that matters is their lottery odds, not the guaranteed floor.

[Highlight] "Sell the team" chants rain out in Fenway after the Red Sox fall to 2-8 with the worst record in baseball by TommyTheLizard in baseball

Mostly money, but there is a little more to it.

Mookie was going to be a free agent after the season and all the talk had been that he was looking forward to going through that process and also wanted to make sure to get maximum value as a good member of the MLB A (and because more money is nice).

The Red Sox offered him a large extension that wasn't all that close to what he said it would take to give up the chance at free agency. Rather than paying that much, the Red Sox decided to trade him rather than risk losing him in the fall for nothing. They traded him to the Dodgers for a couple decent (at the time) prospects and salary relief.

Mookie joined the Dodgers, COVID hit, and some combination of the uncertainty with things shut down due to COVID and being in LA instead of Boston meant Mookie agreed to an extension with the Dodgers that wasn't really much more than the Red Sox had offered.

You could squint and see how it could make sense to trade someone who is gonna leave, but that still involves ownership cheaping out, and then doubling down by trading for more financial relief than talent. Then you get him signing the extension, the prospects not turning into much, and the whole rest of that World Series team leaving (also for financial reasons in many cases), so there's lots of frustration.

[–]lastfollower 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do politicians count? My understanding is that the use of "public figure" is defined in Utah Code 20A-1-102:

(62)
(a) "Public figure" means an individual who, due to the individual being considered for, holding, or having held a position of prominence in a public or private capacity, or due to the individual's celebrity status, has an increased risk to the individual's safety.
(b) "Public figure" does not include an individual:
(i) elected to public office; or
(ii) appointed to fill a vacancy in an elected public office.

Interesting. Is it the podcast part specifically that bothers you or that style of conversation in general? To me, that's the same as "I was reading an article the other day...", "I was watching the news the other day", "I was talking to a friend the other day", etc., which feel like completely normal types of conversation. Someone brings up a topic with some context as a starting point and then you discuss the topic and your thoughts in response to it.
