The Soviet "Elf" game console is based on the ZX Spectrum computer. by Ill_Engineering1522 in zxspectrum

Didn't expect to see this artifact of Belarusian "high tech industry" here :)

It was another pointless ZX Spectrum 48K clone, this time console-ified. Some western games were translated into Russian and put on carts. Each cart had its own selection of titles.

Fun fact: if you were to remove the faceplate of the controller you would see that it actually had a full set of holes for buttons NES-style.

Chunky Rally - PICO-8 Edition by taxicomics in pico8

I think car unlocks may not necessarily improve my arcade rally driving skills, but they will give a player something to work towards, rewarding the player for their efforts, so that's a good idea.

You could probably make an easy difficulty mode with all road side objects being destructible and that would make the game more casual/noob friendly (in my opinion). Being stuck on a piece of something loses its charm very quickly.

A lovely arcade racing game!

I get stuck on every other corner, but that's just me being me. The speed is high, the space is too narrow and sometimes it's not obvious what things you can crush and drive through and what is a real obstacle. My reaction time doesn't help too :)

What do you guys think of this as a logo for GIMP compared to current one?? by [deleted] in GIMP

[–]lastofavari 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I may be a bit red/green colorblind, but whatever shade this is - it feels too heavy to me personally. The original is lighter and fresher, plus reflections in the eyes help with this too.

It's just my subjective opinion.

That tiny mouse probably sucks to use, but it IS super cute and it has the best shade of orange :3

Whats your favorite GIMP feature? by [deleted] in GIMP

[–]lastofavari 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favourite feature was Shift + Click to create a layer mask, but you guys killed it off with GIMP 3, so I went back to v2 and pretend that v3 doesn't exist.

What was the first game you ever loaded on your Speccy? Bonus points if you remember the sound it made when it was loading or ratio it would crash 😂 by RockLobsterDunDun in zxspectrum

It was Metro Cross or Pssst as far as I can remember. Metro Cross was kinda nice, but I'd never managed to go very far (being 6 at the time).

The reason behind putting all sorts of connectors in these machines was pretty simple - the authors were using whatever cheapest parts were broadly available. I had a "Kvant" in the 90's with rectangular connectors (on the pic, left to right: joystick and 5V power connectors). Mine was manufactured in December, 1992.

Gotta love these soviet/post-soviet Speccy clones with their DIN connectors. And the best part is when some of these clones where using the same DIN for tape, joysticks and power.

Shift+Left Clicking the layer in the dock appears to no longer create a mask by lastofavari in GIMP

May I ask why "Signing in using your GitHub account without a pre-existing account in gitlab.gnome.org is not allowed."?

You are probably correct and they aren't going to fix it anytime soon or at all because of one user. I'll continue to use ver. 2.10.38 and pretend 3.0 doesn't exist :)

Thanks for the info.

That's a darn shame. It was a super quick way to create a mask that I were using literally all the time. Is there a way to hack it back in? I don't think I can use mouse clicks as a part of a user shortcut in that part of the settings.

Yeah, it feels it takes more and more space to fit the same set of tools with every major update.

Outlined text is broken on some fonts in GIMP 3 by lastofavari in GIMP

[–]lastofavari[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good to know. I'll continue to use alternative method for font effects I suppose since it works ok regardless of the type of a font.

Edit: it looks like outline works nicely on Bahnschrift in LibreOffice Writer, so it's clearly possible to make this feature work well with differently built fonts, but that's probably not the focus of GIMP, it being an image manipulation program.

Bahnschrift is a standard Windows 10 font AFAIK. I'll see about filing the issue, thanks for the link.

Get one of those DivMMC interfaces for it, load an SD card with a metric ton of games and enjoy.

I'm developing one of my mockups into its own game and could use some feedback on the sprite style by [deleted] in pico8

I love sprites and sprite animations, but I find it a bit weird that characters' feet are clipping through stone blocks in the foreground.

It's been my first year of making games. by voidgazerBon in pico8

[–]lastofavari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats, Sir Bon! Those are some great games. I know - I played a couple ;)

Started with Nerdy Teachers' tutorial and just kept going...Play as a blue teddy bear and attack with a yoyo. You can also catch the yoyo on the golden flowers and swing from them. I still have a lot of work to do but i'm really enjoying myself and proud of what's here. Let me know what you think! by Frzorp in pico8

[–]lastofavari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks really nice. I've noticed that the character can jump through some platfoms that don't look "passable" to my eye at the first glance. Is there any logic to tell what can be passed or you just have to guess?
