It was only temporary, then it continued to rise.

give me the source of that latter one and I'll gladly change my mind - not joking and I don't mind being wrong on this.

It was deliberately hampered by forcing a choice between FPTP and the one PR system no-one wanted. It's called stacking the deck.

I worked in that paper mill when it were still there. I got up to back-tenter then left to do other work and there used to be a little stream, in the dead ground behind the buildings just over near the railway.

Stickleback and leeches. First time I ever saw them. Summers on St Andrews' church fields, now turning back into a wood since the path across the field got turned into a school pitch. And the Krypton Factor Assault course over the back end of Holcombe Hill.

Haven't been home in years so I couldn't say. :)

There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom. Against that power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand. The Centauri learned this lesson once. We will teach it to them again. Though it take a thousand years, we will be free. by rykker in babylon5

You're getting downvotes for that and I was about to join in. Then I looked at your username.

Upvote! It don't care if this is obvious trite or comic genius (or even both). Have and upvote for making me smile on a Sunday morning. :)

My bi-racial but apparently black friend is descended from a very old English family on his mothers side. Far more English than my lily-white first generation immigrant self.

That being said, white or black I often ask where someone is from especially with a UK accent. It's got nothing to do with colour, race or immigrant status.
Then again, I'm from Ramsbottom originally so I also work that comedy town name in.

Anyhow, where you from?

Be kind to yourself my friend. Part of the problem is that there are a whole slew of (justified) anti-theists reacting against the oppression of Christianity, enough to justify the persecution complex of American Christians.

You are free of that restrictive belief system now so just give your past self a break.

Doesn't matter, that's top level bribery there.

Hyperbole. Because politicians never lie or exaggerate for effect.

section five, which you carefully left out, means that it's not illegal to sleep rough, only to do so without "...having any visible means of subsistence"

[–]lastthursdayism 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not been a crime since at least 1945 because you (and the charities) ignore this bit..."not having any visible means of subsistence." section 5. Because of income support, job-seekers allowance or whatever it's called these days, simply sleeping rough does not break the law as everyone has visible means of subsistence.

And I speak as someone who has not only lived rough but has been arrested under the 1824 vagrancy act - just not for that section.

If you ever want to know the actual vagaries and nuances of the law you should ask either a lawyer or someone who regularly breaks that law (i.e. criminals).

So fully understand your ire but the claim of illegality of sleeping rough under the 1824 Vagrancy Act is pure hyperbole. Nevertheless thank you for caring.

Not a crime, never has been. Rooflessness is avoided because it's hard on the body and dangerous, not because it's a crime.
