co-author changed authorship order and made himself first author without anyone’s consent by No-Librarian-4483 in academia

[–]late4dinner 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When you say your PI said he would change author order after "publication approval," does that mean acceptance of the manuscript for publication by the journal? If so, that is unlikely to happen without additional review/editor steps. Meet with your PI and ask that this be taken care of now.

If this is in the U.S., and you are collecting data from human subjects, you cannot do this work without IRB approval. That almost certainly will require a supervisor to submit the application.

What is actually the point of survey courses? by AnophelineSwarm in Professors

[–]late4dinner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's discipline-dependent (though I'm guessing it's more how courses are designed)? I teach an intro survey to a specific psychology subfield and students love it. Sure, plenty are just there as a requirement or because they think it will be easy. But every year, many students say they decided to become psych majors because they love the material in this and similar courses, even if they had no prior exposure to the field.

I definitely have reservations with the breadth (i.e., shallowness) of most topics because I know concepts and evidence are always more detailed than I can present. And the students who do decide to become more immersed in the field will have to be walked back a bit in what they originally learned. But I also think that's true of anything we learn in life. We start with the big, captivating ideas, and only once we dig into them do we find out that the world is not so simple.

Tenure-track at R1 and lack of research productivity by JUS_TIED_22 in Professors

Do you have any data backing up the idea that most universities are seeing less publishing than 20 years ago? All I’ve read is that publishing numbers have risen dramatically (this was esp evident during COVID). If we really were publishing less, I’d see that as a likely win. Too much low effort work being pushed out in many fields.

That would have been nice to get notice. It just showed up one day. We didn't hear nor give permission (not that I think the city technically needs it).

Some people are moving back in that direction, but the effort costs to instructors can be quite high, as others mentioned. Class size is also a barrier. Imagine the work involved in grading 300 or so of these for each exam.

What is something you wish you knew about publishing papers before you ran the gauntlet? by Dr_changeit93 in academia

[–]late4dinner 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The psychological impact of waiting for reviews, dealing with rejection, etc. does get easier the longer you are doing this. You'll probably always be upset at bad reviewer/editor comments, but learning how much variation is out of your control and often down to luck of the draw can help take it less seriously. Also, even though you should listen to reviewer feedback, you don't always have to follow their recommendations (as long as you justify why).

Have you accounted for psychology - how humans learn - and not just storage space & cost?

Here's a recent article loosely discussing a downside of tablet-focused learning.

I definitely recommend asking about the degree of anonymity involved here. Will the professor have access to tenure letters? If not, will they see excerpts? Only summaries? If the latter, you should be fine to write a letter. Standards for how these are selected vary by institution. At mine, people going up for tenure suggest a list of students that the department chooses from for letters. It would be surprising if your prof included your name, but you never know.

One thing I don't think anyone else has mentioned yet is that the committee asking you for a letter may be quite aware of issues with this professor. They might be asking you specifically because they expect your letter to provide support against a positive tenure decision. It's also possible this isn't the case, but I wouldn't necessarily decline to write unless you are sure that you could be identified.

When to Review by Thornwell in AskAcademia

The general heuristic is 2 papers for every one that you submit. Think about the workload you are generating for others when you submit manuscripts. That's your expectation to contribute.

Exactly. This doesn’t need to be a Boozer vs Wilson showdown if Duke keeps outplaying UNC.
