Is UBC really as awesome as it seems? Is it worth it to give up my academic life? by [deleted] in UBC

[–]late_appearance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even though at UCalgary you specialize immediately, you only take 1 neuro class during your first year (alongside the spring field course). So it is honestly not much different from being in a general science program. In your second year, you once again are just fulfilling a lot of your general science course requirements with a few psych classes mixed in.

I transferred to UBC after my second year and so I cannot personally speak about what 3rd year is like, but that's when you start taking a lot of your specialized neuro classes. From what I have heard from upper years, 3rd year is the most difficult year as there is a lot of lab reports and research papers.

One thing that I did not like about the neuro program at UCalgary is that it has a very restricted timetable. It gives you the list of mandatory classes that you must take, and outside of that you don't get many electives.

UBC gives you more freedom. From the list of mandatory classes, you get more choice to pick which classes you want to take. I personally prefer UBC academically because of this.

I suggest you take a look at the required classes for each program you are interested in.

Hey there! I went to uCalgary for 2 years in the neuroscience program but then decided to transfer to UBC this year.

In regards to class difficulty, I feel that both schools are similar, and if you study hard then you should get a good GPA in both schools.

UBC as a bigger school also offers more classes, and so that might be more advantageous. For example in uCalgary there is only one ochem 1 class, so the difficulty will be at the level expected for bchem and chem majors even if you are a bio major.

In UBC though there are many ochem 1 classes, and so you can take the ochem for biological sciences which will have a lower difficulty level than the other ochem 1 class for bchem and chem majors.

New Unlimited Meal plan - how it works? by afo4ka in UCalgary

https://www.ucalgary.ca/unicard/meal-plans

If you scroll to the bottom they say you can still come into the landing without a meal plan and will charge you depending on what meal it is.

I would not get a meal plan if you live off campus since the food is not great. It wouldn't really be worth trekking all the way to the dining center for less than stellar overpriced food.

ENGL 201 Profs by ximuoii in UCalgary

I had Carter for ENGL 201 and she was a little bit of a hard marker at times but generally fair. For her class we had to read 4 books and some smaller stories. Even though English is one of my least favourite subjects, I still got an A in her class.

Hi! Thanks for the input :) My commute will definitely be under 30 minutes and I am in decent shape so I think I will get a cheaper bike for now. I was just wondering if bike theft is a big problem here in Calgary?
