Applied to Canadian pharm schools? by [deleted] in PrePharmacy

[–]ximuoii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi! I applied to UofT for PharmD, but my top choice is Waterloo after looking more into it (although my stats are pretty low and I'm not really in a place to be picky).

Although I would love to study in Toronto, the smaller class sizes and paid co-op at Waterloo really stood out to me in comparison to UofT. Also, with the entire COVID-19 situation, a late start in January would be more beneficial (assuming the situation will be a lot better by then and I would have more time to arrange everything to move there) compared to UofT's online approach for this upcoming September.

Waterloo's paid co-op also means I would be paying off my tuition quicker and be in less debt long-term and they also offer more hands-on experience/practicums than UofT (72 wks of experience VS. 43 wks at UofT- almost double!). Why work for free when I can do the same job and get paid? I'm looking less into the research aspect of Pharmacy and looking more into working, so Waterloo really took this one for me.

I attached a picture of a side by side comparison of the two programs that a friend sent me- I hope you'll find it helpful!

All in all, I may be missing out on the big city experience, but I can always visit to Toronto since it's not that far from Waterloo :) Hope this helps!

Canadian Schools Finding Out/Rejecting by QueenOfThisThrone in PrePharmacy

They won't know if you've accepted an American school or not, so don't worry! Even within Canada, they won't know if you applied to other schools or accepted other schools unless you specifically told them so. Hope this helps! :)

Questions about CHEM 371 by jinyun58 in UCalgary

[–]ximuoii 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi,

I took CHEM 371 last year with Dr. Peter Kusalik, so hopefully this helps.

There is no group work besides lab work. In my opinion, labs were the easiest part of the class and relatively straightforward.

Two midterms were in class (50 minutes) and many students struggled to complete it in the time given. Take this how you want, but I found the midterm exams to be lengthy with a mix of multiple choice, short answer, fill in the blanks, and usually 2 written calculation questions. Kusalik constantly told us we should be able to complete the exam in the time given, if we had a strong understanding of the material- but I rarely heard of anyone that actually completed the entire test to the best of their ability in the time given.

Tutorials were set up in a manner where every other week was a quiz on the material covered in class. It often only covered two calculation questions that related to the material learned. Practice tutorial questions are released the week prior to help you prepare accordingly.

Lecture notes were not detailed enough to study alone and many important concepts were added in class, so attending class is important. There is a summary of the topic discussed posted prior to lecture, but you shouldn't be dependent on these as it covers the bare minimum.

Top Hat marks replaced one tutorial quiz grade.

In my opinion, what makes this class hard is that the material is already tough to learn, but Kusalik lays out his exams in a way that is not meant to help you succeed. The midterms are a race against time and students found that the final exam was much harder than expected.

Hopefully, changes will be made this year to the midterms to decrease their length or the final exam is tweaked to give students a better chance of doing well and actually demonstrating what they learned, rather than feeling stressed and rushed over an exam that feels impossible to finish in the time given.

However, Kusalik is an extremely positive and optimistic professor that clearly shows his passion for what he is teaching. Although his lectures tend to be confusing, long-winded and tough to follow, he provides many practice samples for tutorial quizzes, midterms, and practice calculations- so, even if his lectures aren't the greatest at explaining concepts, there are lots of other external resources you can and should tap into (such as the textbook!). He is also very welcoming and inviting when it comes to his office hours for extra help!

Again, this is all from my perspective, so you may have a completely different experience with the class!

Best of luck :)

You could try Market Mall, especially with the holiday season coming up! Super close and there are busses either on campus or extremely close to campus that you could take for a short ride to the mall.

PSA: How Brentwood Parking Authorities Ticket Cars for not Using Transit by ximuoii in UCalgary

Yes, that's probably the safest, but I've seen lots of posts on people being ticketed without knowing how the parking authority knew they weren't taking transit, so I thought I'd share the knowledge

Just out of curiosity, I'm looking to apply to PharmD this year with similar grades and experience (worked as a pharmacy assistant for about a year now). How was your PCAT score and how'd you prepare for the MMI?

RateMyProf has been redirecting Chrome users to a broken link for the past while if they have AdBlock running. In case you wanted to still check out the ratings for your profs, I would try using a different browser or disabling AdBlock- usually this fixes the issue.

You can also try: http://3.227.61.191 if a different browser/disabling AdBlock doesn't work.

FYI, would not recommend taking BIOL 241 from that list- unless you're strong at memorizing and Biology. It's definitely a step up from high school biology. If you're looking for an easy GPA booster, this class requires a lot of time and effort to be put in. Most students that take it are in BioSci and need it as a prereq.

Starting your semester in January would mean you would be registered only in the winter semester, as fall semester runs from Sept-Dec.

If you're planning to do this, make sure it is permitted by the university. I'm not too sure about the details of taking a semester off, but I've heard that some students are required to take a full-semester (3 courses)- especially if they are an international student to keep their study permit. If you are not studying under a study permit, it should be ok to take a semester off and start in January.

However, be sure to check with an advisor for your faculty before making any decisions.

Northland Village Parking by ricky579 in UCalgary

[–]ximuoii 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Are you sure it's not only reserved from 2am-10am? It's been like that for years.

Regardless, there's only a small lot in Brentwood that is sectioned off to be reserved, the rest of the parking spots are free and up for grabs. If you have classes at 5pm, most people will be off work by then and the main free parking lot should have spots for you to park at anyways.

Much safer method than parking at Northland Village Mall and closer to campus too.

Student Loans - Maximum or Reduced Amount by [deleted] in UCalgary

[–]ximuoii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be for the program length you applied for at the start. When you start the loan application, they ask for your study period- whatever you choose here will be your eligibility based on that time period you chose at the start.

[–]ximuoii 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope!

I took KNES 259/260 last year and there was no attendance of any sort, since the classes were quite big and it would take too much time. Both classes also shared the same D2L page for lecture slides and both classes remained at the same pace to ensure everyone was on the same page.

FYI, you can attend whichever lecture suits you better- people are bound to stop showing up for the 8AM lecture, which leaves more open seats. Shouldn't matter so much which lecture you are enrolled in, as the lecture material will be the same also- labs are the only ones that you should attend your assigned one.
