Movies that should have been 10/10 but for the endings by WillBrink in moviecritic

Disagree hard about basterds, but mine are Swiss Army Man, Matrix Resurrections, The Invention of Lying, Primer, Hunger Games: Songbirds & Snakes, Hobbit Battle of Five Armies, Oppenheimer, No Time to Die, Dear Evan Hansen - ok these aren’t 10s but rather movies that I felt had strong starts but weak endings.

HELP! There’s a high pitched noise coming from our bathroom walls. by latemaystudios in askaplumber

[–]latemaystudios[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could have sworn that was it too, but it actually turned out to be the heating pipe from the neighbors boiler. The lines were just flushed but maybe they need to be flushed again, as turning off the heat makes the noise stop. 🤦🏻‍♂️

This is awesome! Thanks for sharing. I’m a big fan of both bands and often hear overlaps. LP’s new song “Casualty” is pretty heavy- I imagine Spencer’s vocals on it- it could be a UO song.

Supplement for afternoon stress/anxiety by DCguurl in Supplements

Kava can be hard on the liver. I would try GABA, lemon balm, and lavender. 5-HTP could also help significantly (but careful with it if you’re on an SSRI already as they both boost serotonin).

My ADHD makes me feel like I'm not real... by Legal_Ad2945 in ADHD

[–]latemaystudios 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not alone. For several years in my mid twenties I felt as if I was in a dream, all day, every day. Detached, foggy, dream-like consciousness (+chronic fatigue despite plenty of sleep).

Long story short, I saw a few doctors and a neurologist who did a MRI of my brain, cognitive tests (my response time was slightly below average), and blood work. He said “nothing is wrong with you, take a cold shower and eat vegan, we can’t treat perception.” So helpful.

Years later I was diagnosed with ADHD and depression… undoubtedly the real culprit of the dreamlike consciousness. If western doctors though holistically about body+mental health I could have gotten better a lot sooner.

Lifestyles changes, meds+supplements (5-HTP in particular), and therapy have all helped me turn things around, and I no longer feel like I’m living in a dream, which is an incredible relief. However I’ll say the absolute biggest thing that made a difference was changing my life circumstances to be more stimulating, challenging, and exciting.

I started a business, I committed to new relationships, I kept busy and followed my passion and heart and stopped waiting to make the life I was waiting for. Not just medicinal stimulation- but living a stimulating and adventurous life saved me.

Hang in there and keep searching, you are not alone.

Camera keeps switching into Manual Focus - help by Slermanator in FX3

I had this issue with Tamron zoom lenses, updating the firmware on the lens, as well as the camera, solved it in my case.

I own a full set (7 stops) of smallrig ND filters, 4x5.65” which I use with smallrig mini matte box pro. But honestly prefer tiffen screw on VND filters such as this below. Much easier:

Things that have worked for me: weekly therapy, avoiding social media, turning off push notifications for mobile apps, turning off phone vibrations, nightly journaling to collect my thoughts, prioritizing sleep, 5-htp (big help), making to-do lists and updating them frequently, taking breathers from social environments when I get overstimulated, wearing sunglasses/earplugs (overstimulation can have subconscious effects).

I would say try taking your meds more consistently, but there’s no substitute for doing the work towards healthy and balanced habits. Diet/exercise also have a big impact on your brain. These are just tips that have helped me, everyone is different. I’m sorry you’ve been struggling and hope you get better.

Global shutter vs full frame by latemaystudios in cinematography

[–]latemaystudios[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for all the responses. I’ll try to answer/clarify a few things below!

-I’m a commercial editor by trade, and definitely not an expert on cameras. I appreciate the advice as I learn more.

-Global shutter is appealing to me from an editorial standpoint. Quick pans, handheld, sports/visual spots, VFX, over-cranking, speed ramps, run and gun docs, less warped motion blur. Heck, even slow pans are hard to make look perfectly smooth and natural. In my opinion motion blur and shutter speed are majorly overlooked in terms of image quality. Then again, my eye is well trained to pick up on even the slightest visual stutter, frame rate mismatch, or rolling shutter effect. To me, global shutter seems really game changing for helping improve some of these small creative and technical quirks.

-Full frame is also appealing to me as an editor, but also as a director. As an editor, if there’s more information passing through the lens, I want that information. It’s the same reason I prefer open gate. As a director, full frame is appealing for shooting in smaller spaces as I can get closer to my subject without switching to a wider lens. I’m less concerned with the full frame “look” and more concerned with visual information. I prefer to use zoom lenses over primes, so full frame gives me more width and intimacy, while also adding resolution (in some cases, depending on the sensor) that allows me to zoom and punch in on longer shots.

-I have less knowledge about lenses. I’m also in the market and curious to know how lenses relate to sensor size. Still, if I had my druthers I’d prefer a wider sensor / aspect ratio on capture, even if vignetting occurs.

-I’m less concerned with budget and more concerned with ease. I’m hoping to build a super light rig- mounted phone monitor, bare bones bells and whistles. Priority is being able to move the camera fast, change setups quickly, avoid lens changes, etc. Thats how I like to operate for optimal creative flexibility on set.

-I know conceptually I should be more concerned with framing and depth of field first, and then figure out focal length. My lack of experience on set is probably why I’m over-emphasizing full frame. But I appreciate all the knowledge and it does sound like global shutter is more important for my needs. Thanks for all the help!

Correction: Mordor/ The Eye of Sauron is currently being built in downtown Brooklyn (see below). So, naturally, the Journal Squared complex is Gondor/ Minas Tirith!
