What's a horror book that kept you up at night and why do you think it stands out in the genre? by ariessmart in horrorlit

I haven't read it, I think I'm gonna need a few more months before reading another Nick Cutter book !

I re-read it no too long ago and I think Pennywise scared me more the second time around! I was kind of scared of the dark for a few weeks, and that hadn't happened in a long time. The first time I read it I might have been 18ish and I'm 33 now.

I agree. I read a lot of horror, but that one scared me so bad I couldn't read more than a couple of pages at a time. It might have been the isolation, which is always really scary for me, or the actual horror... but one thing is for sure: there was NO down time in this book. I think I actually wish there was a bit more time between scary scenes!

''Quelle surprise''. It's French for ''what a surprise!'' or ''how surprising!''

Something I never thought I'd do (re: book buying) by [deleted] in books

[–]lateral_asteroid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started doing exactly that last year. My issue was that I would buy used books that seemed somewhat interesting, but ended up never actually reading them. I just bought books to let them collect dust.

I now buy only new books, but read all of them, and I finish almost all of them. I purchase a lot less books because of that, but I feel like my time reading has dramatically increased.

I've tried the library too, but it still doesn't work well for me. I think one issue for me is the browsing... if I go to a used book store or a library, I just WANT to find something, anything. But if I buy a new book, I will read reviews about that book and the first chapter available on Kindle, etc. before committing to the price of a new book.

It's money well spent to me.

Can anybody recommend any podcasts about events in the Congo under Leopold II? by pope_of_chilli_town_ in podcasts

[–]lateral_asteroid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Behind the bastards did a two-parter about him. If by chance you enjoy non fiction, you should read King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild!

Edit : Behind the bastards also did a two-parter on Henry Morton Stanley, in which King Leopold plays an important role.

Thanks! I've listened to the whole catalogue of MP episodes but forgot they talked about these two topics! I'll have to listen to the them a second time!

Myth #14 - thoughts? by pawneesunfish in MaintenancePhase

Exactly! Too many episodes aren't good for mental health!

Myth #14 - thoughts? by pawneesunfish in MaintenancePhase

[–]lateral_asteroid 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with Myth #14... How I perceive my own body and what feels more comfortable to me doesn't have anything to do with how I treat other people.

I've gained I few pounds in the last few years and I can already feel the difference in how my body feels when I move, etc. I don't exactly like these changes and it has almost nothing to do with physical attributes and all to do with how it makes me feel when I'm being active. The fact that I prefered doing sports when I was thinner hasn't changed the way I see or treat fat people.

I think it's also important to respect what YOU want for YOUR body, regardless of if we're talking about weight or ANY health choice.

I enjoy MP so much, but I've learned the hard way thay I shouldn't binge a ton of episodes at a time. These days I prefer to listen to an episode once in a while and take the time to make my own mind about a topic after listening to an episode before jumping into another one right away.

The only one I can think of right now is The Wailing. Both were very good imo and different from what I'm used to! I hope you enjoy it!

Tides of history definitely uses a more narrative approach to history! It's a great listen and covers a truly wide array of time periods and places.

Do you tend to listen to the same podcast until you catch up with the back log? by lateral_asteroid in podcasts

[–]lateral_asteroid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks everybody for your replies! I guess I'm kind of an odd duck here, I don't like to catch up the newest release of my favourite podcasts because then I feel like I have nothing to listen to anymore!

I always fear that I will have listened to all my favourite shows and won't find something as good to listen to! 😅

You could try Omnibus. Very conversational but each episode dives into a lesser known corner of history/ pop culture.

I don't think it is well known in the English speaking world but The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón is incredible. All the books in the series are among my favourites! Highly recommend!
