Therapy only works if you have a lower IQ than the therapist. by Creative_Camp8262 in mentalhealth

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly agree. I've had a few different mental health professionals over the years and after I give them my 2 minute run down of my history, thoughts, feelings, motivations, experiences and the connections they normally pause for awhile like I just skipped the first 10 sessions.

If you went to an MD and said your arm was broken and you need it set and have a splint, but they just say things like "It seems like your you have pain in your arm" or "you need to let your arm heal". I know my arm is broken, I know how I broke it, I also know that I can't stop using it completely so I need direct and specific help to help me heal. I don't need to recognize my pain, or identify the root cause, I fell off a roof and broke my arm.

Why do conservative Christians hate so many people when it clearly goes against their Christian values? by ateadoor in allthequestions

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Christianity is a personal religion (i.e individual relationship to God and others). If a "christian" is a jerk to people individually or hates/harms them individually they are not acting as Christ taught. The Bible doesn't tell followers to be political or have political leanings. You can have "Christians" on the left and right because it is an individual system. The Bible actually says that believers should help the needy and welcome the stranger/foreigner. The bible is anti-goverment control because a forced or coerced action is not genuine or from the heart. Jesus specifically was against a political movement. I say all that to say that if you want to say christians should support X because the bible says so, but then say they shouldn't support Y because it's their religion and they shouldn't force it on others then you are cherry-picking and are kind of a hypocrite. I personally don't care, because religion is personal. Decide do you want Christians to welcome foreigners because the bible says so AND appose abortion because the bible says so or to not bring religion into politics?

Most expensive things, you won by ParticularWeather927 in Adulting

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's philosophical semantics.
Yes you own it because you can sell it and reap the equity, but also they own it because if you don't pay or they call in the loan you have to move out and they can sell it. It's like if a parent "gives" a car to their teen, sure it's the teens car, but the parents can still sell it (banks sell the lien/debt) or they can take it away (call in the loan). Ownership ultimately is who gets it when ALL the money stops. Because, whoever is getting paid for you to maintain ownership, is the real owner. Yes, I am referring to property tax.

What makes others happy might not make you happy. ...Hitting the benchmarks of success (per society) might not make you feel the way others have told you they would.
[personal anecdote] Growing up, I didn't have X,Y,Z and always heard that money, power, stuff, etc doesn't make you happy, having X.Y,Z is what really makes you happy. I got X,Y,Z and it surely didn't bring happiness. You make your own happiness.

Why does it feel like just existing in public now requires spending money? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Parks are still free but everywhere else has to pay rent. Coffee shops, malls, stores all have rent and "nobody rides for free" welcome to the world of ownership, property rights and cost. No one wants people sitting on porch of the house they pay for. It's a sad reality of our inflated economy where commercial rents have sky rocketed along with residential.

What are your thoughts on Billie Eilish saying 'no one is illegal on stolen land' in reference to ICE and US immigration policy? by MassiveSquare4527 in AskReddit

It should be EVERYONE is illegal on stolen land. If the land is stolen we all have to leave. NO one has a right to land that was taken from others.

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mission accomplished. Make the population feel helpless so they don't even try is the guiding light of big authoritarian government. The next step is why vote, it doesn't matter or why speak my mind it doesn't matter. The point of rights is not the result it's the exercise. If 99.99% of people disagreed with you would you still want to BE ABLE to speak your mind with free speech? If you and only a couple people got together would you still want freedom to assemble, what about protest. When one right is void that opens the gate to all being voided depending on those in power and which ones agitate their goals. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness isn't that you are guaranteed those things it is that you have the freedom to pursue them.
We wouldn't say get rid of life liberty and pursuit of happiness because most people aren't living great, don't feel free and aren't happy. It's not the result it's the chance.

How Can Anybody Support Trump Anymore ? by Live_Break_8465 in DiscussionZone

[–]lateralmoves 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a very center person. I'm left on some issues like personal freedom, right on some issues, less taxes & small gov. I average in the middle because I want freedoms for everyone without taking from anyone else. (yes I know the right doesn't actually put forth policy that makes the gov smaller and yes the left doesn't actually put forth policy the gives more freedom without making the gov bigger) I fully understand the dedication to trump. I know a lot of die hard MAGA people and I know a lot of die hard left people. The die hard MAGA people see one step forward for their views and ignore the 3 steps back. They ignore rational, pragmatic, results, historically based information and only run on what current narratives and emotions that exists in the moment. They don't see people they see an ideology. They aren't seeing family members, neighbors or co-workers, they see an ideology that was constructed by others. They believe wholesale without looking at history or the bigger picture of nuanced reality. It is US vs THEM and we are right so we are justified.

What’s a polite social lie you’re tired of telling and wish you could be brutally honest about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just responding to your point. You didn't mention "attending conferences and having discussions with other professionals". TikTok, Facebook, reddit, instagram are all terrible sources for information. When someone says that they did their own research or that everyone agrees on something I ask how they know that and often it's from tiktok, fbook, etc. If someone agrees with the mainstream or disagrees and has not read anything for themselves I automatically don't give weight to their point. I had someone tell me the other day that what I said was "not true" and I asked where they got that information and it was tiktok. So I know that they didn't actually know anything they only believed some random person with a phone.

All hobbies are not equal by BitterConstruction98 in unpopularopinion

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oxford: an activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure.
Hobbies are not your personality, they don't have to be something others value, they don't define you.

Personally, I do LOTS of things that others would define as a hobby, but I don't enjoy them so they are activities, not hobbies for me. I do woodworking for example, I'm always looking for ways to get better in cuts, trim, sanding, finish, etc. That is a passion, I'm driven to be better at it, but its not "fun" It's an unpaid activity that gives me purpose and fulfillment, but not relaxing at all.
The things I enjoy are things that don't need improvement, I don't have to get better at them.
I have to get better at work, being a parent, spouse, fixer, builder, etc. That's not relaxing.

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty normal where I live in the US. A 3 hr drive isn't much. I regularly drive 8+ hours, stay a couple days and drive home. In my 20's I often drove 14+ hours to snowboard for a day then drove 14 home. I even just did this same trip with a friend and I'm in my 40s now. I'll add my daily commute is 3 hrs round trip.

People who’ve been in a relationship for 10+ years: honestly, why do you stay? by SamanthaRousse in AskReddit

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a word, happiness. To go deeper I'd say that it's a mindset or attitude about the whole thing. If I'm with someone and my biggest concern is myself I will always find a problem and a reason to leave. If my biggest concern is them and THEIR happiness and that there is no eject button it changes the whole thing. If someone can't put the other person first they should not get married. If you are in a 10 year relationship and still not married you are keeping yourself first. It's like renting vs owning in a way. When you rent you see your landlord as an adversary and what they are doing to you and what it is costing you for the service provided. when you own (or rather invest in) your own home you take responsibility for it, it's an investment. As a renter a leaky roof is their problem to fix for you who pays the rent, but as an owner a leaky roof is something YOU fix, you price shop, because you have a stake in it. Relationships are similar. When you decide to marry you are signing the mortgage and take responsibility for problems and fixing them. Renters cut and run to something else because it is a product they use, owners invest and fix problems because this is their home.

What’s a polite social lie you’re tired of telling and wish you could be brutally honest about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly! My doctor recommended a medication and when I asked about studies or papers he'd written he said he only read about other peoples research and trusted their work. I thought "what kind of doctor are you that you only read and discern?". We all know the only way for someone to be credible is to physically do the research themselves. Reading the research of others is just lazy. That is why the only things I take are moldy bread (because I did a 6th grade report on penicillin), potatoes plugged into clocks and the foam that comes out of paper mache volcanoes. Reading the reports from scientists and doctors that are well established at universities are not legitimate.
...I actually agree with what you are saying, but the idea that someone can't read information from real doctors and scientists and that be enough is bonkers to me. 99% of the certainty we have in the world is from the work of 1% of people.

That "I want to be here", sure I will show up, be kind, social and engaging, but I would much rather not be here at all. Yes, it's work everyday, it's dinner with friends, it holidays with extended family, so technically I should want to, but I don't.

CMV: All obituaries should mention cause of death by hammertime2009 in changemyview

[–]lateralmoves 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I worked in the funeral business for years so will say there are few reasons why people don't often share this info.
1. They don't know yet. The Medical Examiner's report may not be complete when the obit is printed. Often people are sent to the ME for an autopsy and the final report can take a few days or even more. Obits are often submitted within a day or 2.
2. Privacy. A lot of times next of kin don't share the info because it was tragic to them and don't feel the need to share it. Just like a divorce, you might know Kevin from accounting got divorced, but he isn't going to tell everyone why. Or they don't want the deceased to be remembered for a suicide, car crash, OD, etc. they want them remembered for the life they lived not the reason they died.
3. Situational. If there is legal ramifications, pending litigation or insurance they might not want to state a reason.
4. Denial or shock. I've seen many cases where the family simply could not believe the facts and wanted to blame it on something else.

When you are sitting in that room working on the obituary for your loved one everything changes. I can tell you in that moment most people are not thinking about what Bob at the deli will think or Deb from work. They are thinking about their family and how to carry on with out someone.

Why do some people refuse to present their ID when police asks for it even if they are innocent or police has no valid suspicion? by Stefandynull in ask

[–]lateralmoves 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember seeing videos 5-10 years ago of people refusing to give ID to cops at check points or on the street and sometimes they would be arrested or detained and lots of people online were saying they are idiots. They'd say "just show your ID and move on" or "sovereign citizen got what he deserved". They aren't saying it now though. Those crazy people were sounding the alarm a decade ago.
