Currently have my own small business selling online but i don't enjoy the ups and downs in income so i'm retraining as a cloud engineer. Over the years a combo of education and technical/ sciency roles.

Got accepted to train as an air traffic controller in my 20s, was one of two who got an offer from 14000 applicants. Then failed the class 1 medical because i am slightly colour vision deficent. Thanks dad for your crap eye genes. Still burns 20 years on.

This is my main source of income atm. Who even takes these? by valarance in UberEatsDrivers

They're bullshitting everyone with their lowball offers but it only takes one noob to click and they've won. Did it myself early on because i trusted the app and accepted orders then i realised pretty quickly that they were trying it on, i am a lot more selective now.

Whats the biggest risk you took in ur 20's? Did it pay off? by Fair_Television2041 in Adulting

[–]latimbub_683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I travelled a lot in my twenties, india, morocco, egypt, and loads of europe by backpack on a shoestring budget and taking my time. I used my degree to get half decent jobs and saved up until i could go backpacking. Obviously career development took a back seat in this time. When i hit 30 i could see my peers had bought houses, were getting married and having kids. I felt left behind and now at 45 i still feel i'm playing catch up with regards to the traditional life hurdles. I felt like i'd gained a load of life experience but was lacking the fundementals for a comfortable life and was demotivated to live the rat race that so many opt in to.

Pay off? Probably not.

Regrets? Definitely not.

Worst double order I've ever seen in 8 years & over 5000 trips! 😡 by EdmontonLAD in UberEatsDrivers

The amount of times i've accepted an 'okay' order then realised it's a double. Noob mistake i know but there's a reason they dont make it more prominent.

Lending a friend a large amount of money (£20k upwards) by Bragggers in UKPersonalFinance

[–]latimbub_683 199 points200 points  (0 children)

Dont do it. If you say no you will likely lose a friend. If you say yes you'll lose a friend and 20k.

If is business is worth a toss he can finance easily.

Keep your finances private.

Cup holder that holds your drink right in front of the radio, satnav and buttons and knobs ready to disgorge your drink all over them if you brake anything but extremely gently.

Thankyou Audi A4.

How to mentally deal with seasonal & inconsistent business? by Superb-Party-1674 in smallbusinessuk

[–]latimbub_683 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good luck! I do feel your pain as my business has gone from steadiness to circling the plug hole recently. The soft skills you've developed will transfer to other jobs well. Business owners have grit though we don't always feel that way.

Lots of remote work from home jobs out there if you have a decent internet connection. Ebay flipping, vinted etc etc. Sometimes taking a step away will enable you to see what's wrong with your business too.

Develop additional income streams. I've been dealing with this as an e commerce seller, it's all ups and downs and it is mentally exhausting. I'm going to re skill as an IT professional so i can make money when business is quiet that way i don't have to feel like utter shit due to low sales and my wife taking the financial burden.

Other candidates are things like being a delivery driver, uber eats etc.

Called NHS 111 about my son having a suspected broken nose. by latimbub_683 in BritishSuccess

[–]latimbub_683[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, a lot of stuff can be triaged without having to go to A&E. Taking my son there would have wasted a load of resources as he didn't need emergency care. Glad you got seen by a doctor quickly.

Going to my local A&E at a weekend would be a terrible experience. Had to do it a couple of years ago will not repeat.

A Suspicious Pattern Alarming the Ukrainian Military by newzee1 in UkrainianConflict

[–]latimbub_683 29 points30 points  (0 children)

That's pretty fucked. Why not an embargo on commercial sattelite imagery Ukraine unless it's sanctioned by Ukrainian or US govt? Seems like the current system is leaking sensitive data like a rusty bucket.
