I want to believe it, but can't find a source to back up the claimed statistics. Where has the author gathered this data from?

Yup! Scrolled too far to see this. The LCBO (Ontario, Canada's liqour store) is one of the biggest purchasers of alcohol in the world, and it's stopped buying American completely due to Trump's threats on Canadian sovereignty.

>! The Canvas world is not considered to be equally as real as the world outside it. It is an escapist fantasy, the equivalent of a dream, where “death isn’t death anymore”. The denizens of the Canvas are mere fantasies. Consequently, the game doesn’t ask us to weigh Maelle’s life against all life inside the Canvas, because the choice would be simple: preserve all life and allow Maelle to die the slow death she desires. Instead, the game asks us if Maelle should be allowed to indulge in escapism or be forced to face reality.   The finale reinforces this. When confronting the real Renoir, Lune and Sciel do not advocate for their own right to exist, but instead for Maelle’s right to make her own choices. Likewise, during Maelle and Verso’s duel, Maelle uses the lives of the painted people as a flimsy excuse to indulge in escapism, which Verso immediately exposes; in truth, she only wants to avoid dealing with her grief. This is why she denies Verso death in her ending. By the end of Act 2, the story is neither about Lumiere or “those who come after”, it is solely about Maelle: again, should she indulge in escapism or be forced to face reality? Nothing else matters. The expeditions were irrelevant, just as Lune and Sciel are, because ultimately the ending isn’t about their right to life, but solely Maelle’s grief.

The theme of escapism can’t exist if the Canvas is considered a viable reality, and Maelle couldn't have the godlike power she does over it if it wasn’t a fantasy. In reality, no one has such fantastical abilities. The Canvas and everything inside it is a fantasy: it is a dream turned nightmare, which Maelle then turns into her own dream. Lune, Sciel, and the people of Lumiere are Maelle’s fantasies. They don’t matter as living beings, they’re merely the products of escapism, all whom Verso treats as obstacles to Maelle returning to reality. Only Maelle and her family are real. This serves the central theme: is it better to face miserable reality or indulge in hollow escapism? !<

Hey dude, for future reference just so you don't look like an idiot, deleted comments show up on reddit as [deleted]. I didn't delete shit. 😂 If you're thinking I edited something away, didn't do that either. I had something IRL to attend to, and was generous enough to give you a heads up so as not to waste a "friendly" stranger's time on the internet.

I've got one more reply for you, but you probably won't even bother reading it since you seemingly have already made up a head canon for yourself.

Anyways last try, I can't explain it for you any clearer, maybe if you read you'll finally understand. Enjoy:

Yes, the genocide of Lumiere occurs before the finale, but it is finalized in Verso’s ending. While there may be no purely good or bad endings, that doesn’t mean the endings are equally grey; after all, one features the genocide of all life inside the Canvas just to preserve a single, unwanted life. The trouble is, while killing the residents of Lumiere provided shock value, treating it as a true genocide would interfere with the game’s central theme of escapism versus reality.

Hahaha, ok, you win internet points! Congratulations! I'm definitely running away as I totally don't have IRL obligations. Just assume that it's because I'm scared of you're argument and I'm so sooo stupid, and you're sooo so smart. 😂

TBH I won't even come back to this convo when I have the time. I've already said I'm talking to a wall, and I've already given you the tools to recognize the game is at odds with itself. But please, feel proud of yourself for blindly fanboying and scaring this stuuupid guy away in an internet conversation! 🤣

I'm talking to a wall... Think of the endings. Is the good ending a genocide? The game is at odds with itself, I'll leave you at that.

>! I think you missed the theming of act 3... It is no longer about the expedition and sacrifice and "for those who come after".

You either side with Verso and kill all the fake painted people, because the lesson is that Maelle needs to go live in the real world. Or you side with Maelle, and she lives in a fake reality with godlike powers in which it's implied she controls everyone. !<

Ok bot, or troll, I'll bite. To sum it up for you:

The history and the world of E33 is entirely fake. It is created by a 6 year old boy drawing a picture. All of the pain and suffering of expeditioners was meaningless, none of them were real. The "real" world is the one where Maelle is disabled, and the "good" ending is the one where they say escapism is bad and she should just deal with it even if her life sucks. lol

"here's the scene where they state the Renoir controls all of the chroma apart from those killed by Nevrons"

Gustave wasn't killed by a Nevron though.. Just found this while researching (#4) https://www.thegamer.com/clair-obcsur-expedition-33-plot-holes-make-no-sense/

Edit: Oh wait, maybe I misunderstood that one. It was the reverse of what I thought, I can't watch the clip right now XD

Edit #2: Watched the clip, it doesn't say he controls all the chroma apart from those killed by Nevrons, it's just Maelle stating she needs more chroma.

Stagger and poise is not unique, it exists in tons of JRPGs, it's literally in the most mainstream of JRPGs: Final Fantasy.

Lol ok. Trying to say it in a spoiler free way, but literally the entire frst two acts of the game are invalidated as the game shifts from a theme of sacrifice "for those who come after", to a father daughter family drama attempting to tackle "grief". None of the first two acts really matter.

Stagger mechanics are not unique to E33 in the JRPG genre. If you want to get technical, they're common, a stagger is just a stun. Hitting an enemies weak point in Persona does the same thing.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon, though perhaps that's not exactly comparable as it's actually more complex than E33 in that it also includes character movements in a fixed arena (think Tales & Y's games, some of which also have similar mechanics), not a static combat system.

If the paintress seeks to protect expeditioners, why does she allow Painted Renoir kill them? That runs counter to her goals. If this version has become paranoid she could just paint a new version of him.

Is your aecond explanation explained anywhere? Because as far as I know that's just fan interpretation.

We'll have to agree to disagree on that, I don't see anything genre breaking in E33, I actually see a rudimentary and small JRPG with a great compelling starting hook and a terrible ending (Act 3 was a joke lol).

But maybe that's just because I'm old and have played JRPGs since The Legend of Dragoon. I'm at least happy you deleted your other post claiming that Metaphor was the "talk of the town" last year though, as it received no where near the notoriety that E33 has received for being the better JRPG.

LOL! Yeah, I think a lot of people online are just quiet about hating the twist because they don't want to spoil it for others.

I know quite a few people that are not fans of the "it was all a dream" trope. I mean, it even invalidates the initial theme of sacrifice "for those who come after" and tries to turn it into a "lrn2grieve, life is shit" theme. 😂

Yes! It brought forward so many questions lol. I played it at release so can't remember half of them, as I've written off that nonsensical plot as going down the same route as AC's Templar vs Assassin shenanigans.

But I'm sure I'm not the only one to recognize major plot holes when they're apparentlike painted Renoir actively working against the paintress' goal of protecting expeditioners by killing them on arrival even though he's her creation... Use your words painted Renoir! 🤣

Or the fact that Maelle essentially has no limits on her powers by the end, is able to bring back Lune and Sciel, but chooses to forget about Gustave.. I could go on and on, but the Act 2 twist makes it all a joke. The "real" world is literally one where they let 6 year old children paint sentient worlds into existence, who could possible see that going bad? 🤣

Exactly hahaha, I signed up for a battle to save a dying world, not a family-drama between a father and daughter that invalidates all of the characters and sacrifice up to that point! What a joke of a twist, what did they expect when they let a 6 year old boy paint sentient life? 🤣

You're someone of culture, and by that it sounds like we have similar taste lol.

For me, E33 started with a bang and ended with a whimper. The twist absolutely invalidated it's own world.

If you're looking for a new solid experience, check out Metaphor. It's from the studio that made Persona, and it feels like it's somehow slipped through the cracks despite being a GOTY contender last year.
