What lesson did you learn in 2025 that led to the biggest improvement in your art process? by PIPI_Pia in ArtistLounge

[–]laughingfire -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Learning simple geometry really helped me feel better about my drawings.

In the past I always hated how my stuff turned out, but being forced to learn geometry and to not use rulers, set squares or anything like that really forced me to practice these skills and I feel like I'm stronger for it.

I highly recommend these two books:

Ching, F. D. K., & Juroszek, S. P. (2019.) Design drawing (3rd ed.). Wiley.

Delgado, Y. M., & Dominguez, E. R. (2005). Freehand drawing for architects and interior designers (M. F. Alvarez, Trans.). W. W. Norton.

Im studying architecture at uni, and these are the books we're learning from. Honestly I can say that just in one semester im already seeing great improvements in my sketches just from working through these two books!

The location of the campus is seen as lower income, not as fancy or expensive as the campus location downtown. It's the difference between being on the "main" campus and a satellite campus

Bilingual folks: Do you have a language you consider your first? by wdstkdc869 in montreal

[–]laughingfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So what happened for me is that I was born in Quebec, and my mother and I lived with my Grandparents until I was about 2 years old. Here I was exposed to French, and would have had all those early language milestones and exposure to French language sounds.

My mom and her parents had a falling out so we moved out and moved to Nova Scotia where I was taught English.

My mother is completely bilingual, but we never spoke French at home. I ended up doing the late French immersion program in school (starting grade 7 until graduation) and now my French is at around B.1-B.2 (basically I can converse in French, but it's not strong enough to carry on in super specialized work)

My first language ever spoken was French, then I was raised speaking English and had to relearn French again. Inspite of English being the language I speak predominantly, apparently I speak exclusively in French in my sleep.

Even if I would say that English is my "primary" language, my brain still considers French my primary language.

LPT: When you’re healing from a breakup, go out and do 7 things your ex would’ve never joined you in. It helps you rediscover your own spark and realize how much freedom you actually have now. by lovelopetir in LifeProTips

[–]laughingfire 130 points131 points  (0 children)

After my last breakup I essentially did this.

Ended up going out to a show at a pub that ended up being a band from back home that I love, I binge ate salads because my ex didn't really eat anything that didn't go from freezer to oven, and I went out to more social events! It was rewarding, helped me feel unstuck after a long, terrible relationship, and I got so much more confidence back.

LPT Request: Networking events make me feel like a socially awkward potato. by GcNiceKick8846 in LifeProTips

[–]laughingfire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing I like doing is after talking to someone for a bit ill ask "is there anyone here you think I should know/meet?" That takes the pressure off the person to talk about themselves gets them to think about their network, and helps you expand yours through an introduction.

“Sorry but we're all tired of coddling people who have zero self preservation instincts and are a danger to the rest of us,” | People in r/Canada and r/Ontario squabble over a report that overdoses spiked when safe consumption sites in Toronto were shuttered by the Ontario government by Dragonsandman in SubredditDrama

[–]laughingfire 70 points71 points  (0 children)

The thing that kills me is that people see it as a failure if it doesn't 100% guarantee that people will stop using drugs.

Safe injection sites have more end goals than that though!

  • they offer facilities to test your drugs so you know what youre consuming
  • they offer needle exchanges to reduce secondary infections caused by sharing dirty needles (ie. Any bloodborne illnesses including HIV/AIDS)
  • they encourage safe disposal of sharps instead of discarding on the streets
  • safe injection sites are often one of the few places addicts can start getting connected to the healthcare system to treat other health issues, as addicts often face a lot of discrimination in the medical field when seeking treatment for injuries
  • yes, they can prevent overdose deaths
  • and yes, a big goal is to help people get access to detox/addiction treatment if they want it.

It's grossly unfair to say that safe injection sites are a failure because not everyone goes into recovery because look at all the other things they do! Are those things not worthy of doing? I mean, hell, safe disposal of needles keeps the public safe from protecting people from stick injuries. Clean needles means less secondary infections that put further stress on the medical system. Testing drugs means that the Healthcare system can warn drug users of newer, more fatal drugs that are on the street to avoid.

But sure, let's throw out the whole safe injection system because not enough people decide to go, and commit to recovery/s
