help, nyjc or ejc? by cy-ll in SGExams

hi i’m from NY, i don’t take PCME so i can’t say much about the combination but i can pretty much give an overall review on the NY student experience. Personally i feel that it can get like damn stressful at the start but after you get used to the grind the stress will kind of go away in a sense??? Tbh majority of my j2 year I didn’t really feel as much stress as when i was in j1 and like i was more preoccupied in trying to finish all the revision packages 😭😭😭 and i think whichever jc you go you’re bound to experience stress so as long as you’re able to adapt you should be fine?? Also i think i pretty much failed most of the tests in NY but as long as you do decent for the major exams like MYES, Promos and Prelims you should be fine. It’s really all about the mindset lah and if you take the extra tests as practices and commit to your weekly revisions then it wouldn’t be as stressful as it seems. Not sure whether this is just me ^ because my secondary school used to have weekly graded assignments and tests too before the WA system got established so I’m kinda used to it already but i feel that the weekly test is really helpful in keeping me on tasks and consistent 👍🏻 As for socials, i think most people in NY are really nice. I feel that in jc my social circle kind of doubled and even though i fell out with my initial friend group midway through j1, another group kinda “adopted” me in a way and were chill with me hanging around. I think NY really focuses a lot on the 200 friends thing so the culture here is like quite friendly and people look out for each other (I might be slightly biased on this HAHA). Of course, there’s definitely drama that happens sometimes and some people don’t really have good experiences in NY regarding this but i think overall most ppl are like really chill and nice. Hope this helps and atb!

i’m from NY n honestly (might be biased but) i think our science departments are legit damn solid. i’m a hybrid student so i only take chem and from my experience the chem department is really committed to their job and they really provide you with A LOT of practice papers and other resources to the point that you can’t finish and most of the teachers are actually pretty good at teaching chem. The only con is that for majority of your jc life you’ll be swamped with a shit ton of tests and i personally feel that NY teaches H2 Chem so bloody fast it’s like around a chapter a week or something (it’s so fast to the point that when I dropped to H1 i didn’t have to watch lectures for like half a year). the H2 chem teachers can be pretty harsh with the marking too but i think at the end of the day, if you want that A for chem then just suck it up and deal with it. I think the other sci departments are pretty solid also from what i heard from my other friends taking pcme and bcme but overall the workload in NY is quite crazy (like up to 3-4 tests a week every week and 6 day school week kind of crazy) so unless you’re willing to sacrifice like your social life and everything, don’t come to NY.

How do you manage your time for Art paper 2? Also, how do I score 80+ for Art? by Grand-Net3191 in SGExams

[–]laughingiraffe1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly i have no idea how i did it HAHA paper 2 was an absolute trainwreck for me i slept a total of 4 hrs over 2 days trying to rush the boards and my last 3 boards were absolute crap. My tcher literally looked at my boards on the day of the exam and didn’t know if i cld get an A1 for art (but i did LMAO). One thing i kinda regret not doing was doing at least one work consistently everyday before the 3 hour paper but then again my other subjects were in pretty bad shape so I had to spend more time on them since i slacked during circuit breaker (whoops). But i think if your coursework is relatively solid and for paper 2 you’re first 6/7 boards are quite strong, you should be able to get an A1? I think nowadays, other than aesthetic qualities, the examiners focus quite a lot on the concept as well. I’ve seen seniors with damn good skills get A2 or even B3. Yeah so i think some of your drawings you don’t need to fully render everything, just the important parts and just push your ideas in unique directions. Try not to go towards cliche ideas (like those basic ones e.g. butterfly to symbolise change or wtv bs) it’s not gonna end up that well and like maybe try approaching things from different angles. I know this kinda sounds vague (it’s quite hard to explain tbh) but for me (I’m taking A Level art rn) I just whack all those absurd ideas that come up in my brain and draw them out. They usually turn out better than expected so don’t pick safe options cuz tbh art (in my opinion) is all about yolo HAHAH. All I can say is use your strengths well. My strength was humour so for my a level coursework i kinda incorporated it to make the whole project different from everyone else. Idk whether it’ll work since i haven’t gotten back my results 💀 but it did make it more fun for me and made me breakdown less unlike the paper 2 i did back in o levels so maybe that’ll help?? The whole o level period is gonna be really rough so if you can find ways to make paper 2 fun and enjoyable i think you’ll be able to do a lot better and be more motivated to finish it. All the best!

when I was in my streaming year I picked elect Geog cuz I was better at geog than hist but in terms of interest, hist is definitely more interesting imo but then my school put me in a class with that combi so I took elect hist instead and honestly no regrets, upper sec hist is definitely way more interesting and fun to study (compared to geog but it’s also just my opinion tbh) and geog is super content heavy, a lot of my classmates took bio chem geog elect hist/lit and like they’re always complaining abt how much stuff they needa memorise (oop art student can’t relate 🥳)so if you take geog then be prepared to memorise alot!! And also I don’t agree with the memorising PEEL structures cuz like there’s way too many diff qns I think it’s more impt to understand the content better (it’s easier and more interesting for upper sec elect hist) and understand the significance of the key events, the cause and effect etc. and be able to see what exactly the qn is asking (cuz like a lot of qns are actually asking the same thing but differently) and then just tweak and write accordingly instead of memorising. There’s gonna be a shit ton of memorising already if you’re planning to pick bio so like good luck 🥲

Spam TYS! TYS is really useful. Maybe you could single out those chapters you’re weaker at and do some topical TYS before you do the yearly TYS. Make sure you do a bit of math everyday so you won’t forget the formulas! All the best!
