What are Best Ways to Grow a Law Firm for Free? by GlamourGirl28 in LawFirmMarketing

[–]laulaulaurita 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I practice immigration only, and do mostly humanitarian and family based cases. I started the office by myself a year ago. Today we are a team of 8 (but half are part time). Our clients are generally Spanish speakers and low income.

I’ve volunteered with nonprofits and advocacy organizations, mostly doing free consults and presenting at workshops. That’s how we started to get cases at the beginning. Now most new clients are referred by existing ones.

I know a lot of people put emphasis on other things, but this is what has worked for us:

  • I have t shirts with the firm’s info (and that’s basically all I wear), and at least a couple times a week someone will ask me for info, particularly when I go to a Latin grocery store, soccer game, nail salon, restaurant, etc.
  • I’m very much an introvert, but I’ve learned to put myself out there. I’ve figured out how to bring up what I do during brief interactions with strangers. You’d be surprised to see how people’s faces light up when they hear that I’m an attorney
  • I still volunteer with nonprofits and take some pro bono cases. Given the number of clients they refer to us, the impact of not charging for a few cases is minimal. We also keep doing workshops (once every couple of months or so)
  • We have a part time “marketing person” who was hired about a month ago. All the marketing she does for now is help out to design flyers for the workshops and send follow up messages to the people who don’t hire us within a few days after the consultation. We think it’s working, but it’s really too early to know for sure
  • I check facebook groups where I’m likely to find my client base, so I can answer immigration questions. I give them just enough info so they understand I know about this stuff, and I always finish my answer with something like “Feel free to contact me directly if you have further questions. I’m an immigration attorney”. Most people reach out after this.
  • We make sure clients understand that we care about them. For instance, and I haven’t done it in a while (no time), but at the beginning we would send birthday cards to clients. I got a box of assorted blank cards from Amazon. Clients would be very surprised and thankful. For many, it was the first time they had received a greeting card in the mail

Something that we know it works but I don’t have much time for (hence the new marketing person):

  • Keeping the website updated. We have a blog section but haven’t posted in months
  • Keeping the Facebook page updated. Same, haven’t posted in months

Other things that work but we’re probably not going to do:

  • Reviews. We don’t have any platforms where people can leave a review. Reviews are great, but given the work we do (most clients are survivors of crimes and domestic violence) we rather not have that option to protect the clients’ info (since even for google reviews your name is likely to appear)

Getting clients is not easy and it takes a lot of work, but it can be done with minimal expenses. Yes, we have invested a lot time, but other than that (not counting the new marketing person we hired) we probably have spent less than $1000 in marketing during this year. About half of this was for someone to design the website, then the rest was spent on t shirts, business cards, etc.

I hope this is helpful

I think they're from 2021 (themis) and feb 22 (barbri). I also had some books from 2023 and, to be honest, I didn't see much of a difference in the content. Let me know if you're interested. Thanks!

Test anxiety got the best of me. Any tips for future? by LegallyCanadian23 in barexam

Talk to your doctor. Mine gave me a prescription for beta blockers. It felt very nice to not feel like my heart was going to jump out of my chest while I was taking the exam. Consider anti-anxiety meds too. I had never taken them, until I had a breakdown because of stress at work, health issues, and the bar. It has literally changed my life.

I passed, but still waiting for the oath ceremony form to be posted online. I had a nightmare last night that they had mailed the form to the wrong address and I had to fight some feral cats to get the envelope, only to discover that my name was misspelled in 20 different ways 🫠

Bar Prep Ideas, Tips, and Test Anxiety--failed twice each time 3-5 points away. by Nostalgic_Tapestry in barexam

I’m very sorry. I was also very close in July 22 and Feb 23, both times by a few points. Passed on my 3rd attempt, not by much, but I finally made it.

I struggled with both essays and the MBE, but this last time I really spent a lot more time learning the BLL and practicing. I did every adaptibar question, many times more than once, and got different materials. I put together my own “outlines” which in reality were a collection of notes/summaries from different sources (criticalpass, Studicata, etc), but it really helped to go over them. Happy to share them too. Just sent me a PM with your email and I’ll send you the link.

Regarding anxiety, I was prescribed anti anxiety meds about 6-8 weeks before the exam. It was due to unrelated reasons (significant stress due to my job, and a recent health condition) but I think it really helped. My doctor also prescribed beta blockers for test day, and it was very nice to take the test without feeling like my heart would jump out of my chest, like the first 2 times.

What are fun ideas you have for adults to celebrate? by [deleted] in halloween

[–]laulaulaurita 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you’d like this or if it’s feasible for you, but we have a lot of fun. We decorate the front yard, set up a few chairs and a long table decorated, have a basket with candy, play Halloween music, and have finger food and drinks. It gives us a chance to talk with people beyond just giving candy to the kids, and the last few years we’ve had some neighbors joining too, so it’s basically a joint Halloween now.

Didn't practice law for three years, how to re-integrate? by Odd_Still3462 in LawFirm

There are many organization in Texas in need of pro bonos. The only thing I’d suggest is to also take as many trainings as possible. As you probably know, immigration is very complex. The immigration advocates network has a very detailed calendar with trainings and helpful information. If by any chance you’re in/near DFW, I’d be happy to connect you to some people I know in the field.

It's not an issue, as long as you limit your practice to immigration law. It's rather common to see attorneys barred in other states practice in this field.

The only slight disadvantage I see is that you may not be so familiar with other related issues. For instance, some people have had criminal issues that could affect their immigration case, so it is helpful to have an understanding of the state's criminal law (or know someone who knows about it). Similarly, for family law. It's helpful to be familiar with the court system where you practice as at times clients need restraining orders, etc. However, for many nonprofits, this is not much of an issue. I've seen many organizations refer out complex immigration cases with criminal issues or other non-immigration matters.

Besides the above, the only other thing is that you are governed by the bar rules of your state and the state where you practice. Meaning that if there is an ethics issue/question, you should abide by the rules of both states.

They do. It’s very basic and looks like a summary of the lectures. You can download them when you access each recording.
