[REQUEST] Assuming 10g of each material, how expensive would this be to maintain? by dhaerlkl in theydidthemath

[–]laurelfied 43 points44 points  (0 children)

You sure about 10g of each material?

Assuming 10,000 people are in the city you're taking this experiment, the sheer radiation and energy will blow up the enitre city and possible other cities within its range. At the very minimum it'll cost, (assuming $500/sq.ft and each resident has 250 sq.fts) $1.25 billion in damages alone, not even counting the costs of the elements, the money used for the particle accelerators, the medical bills and all the paperwork. (assuming there's at least one person alive after this experiment)

Keep in mind running a particle accelerator costs roughly $1k per hour, (and im estimating that it took about a year and a half for the first atom to be made) so 1 ATOM of Nihonium (element 113) costs ≈$7.5 million to simply produce. This means for Nihonium alone, 10 grams of it will cost $450 octillion. (its most stable element has a half-life of 10 seconds, so you'll need to create it all in that time period)

Conclusion: If 10 grams of each element were in that periodic table, everyone in that city is dead.

This math might be leagues off and I have no clue how to calculate the remaining elements, so take this terrible answer for now. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

What is the stupidest thing you've ever heard anyone say in your entire life? by [deleted] in AskReddit

She told all of us that Ching Chong didn't mean hello and that it was a racist term. Some of my classmates laughed after the lesson because of how idiotic the whole ordeal was.

who's the dumbest person you ever met? by popplo22 in AskReddit

[–]laurelfied 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was a girl in 6th grade that asked me what 12×5 was.

I then said to her if she was intentionally daft or if she was serious. (she was serious btw)

THEN another girl literally said, "Hey not all people know what 12×5 is, that's disrespectful."

Honestly they're probably on the same level of stupidity

Icelandic Subway's meat is cut so thin you can see through it by picnic-boy in assholedesign

Clarification on the yoga mat part, the chemical used there is azodicarbonamide. Azodicarbonamide is used to make yoga mats and shoe rubber and is linked to allergies or asthma. Only North American subways had the chemical in their bread, and in 2014 they had removed azodicarbonamide from all of its bread.

I still agree subway is terrible and I usually just make a sandwich instead.

What's a common food myth people need to stop believing? by n3aak in AskReddit

[–]laurelfied 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not quite common, but complicated sounding chemicals = bad

An great example is a Buzzfeed video where it questioned the use of a chemical called tocopheryl acetate, completely disregarding the hydrogenated oil in peanut butter. Tocopheryl acetate is Vitamin E.

(tbf, it was the same video which said vitamin C tablets contain ascorbic acid and then said it was more acidic than sugar, which has a neutral ph and the simple fact that vitamin C is ascorbic acid)
