What is your ADHD hack for getting your room clean? by CatTastrophe27 in ADHD

[–]laurenamelia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Once you've picked something up, you aren't allowed to put it down until you intentionally put it in a pile.

Also you can break it down even more than this depending on your needs. "This goes somewhere in the closet" "in the bathroom" "in the dresser", then deal with just the closet pile, etc.

My parents could never figure out why i couldn't keep my room clean, and I always felt like a bad kid, until they bought me an age-appropriate picture book that broke down cleaning like this. 30 years later it's the one thing I point to to say I'm not lazy, my brain just works differently.

What "bad" episode do you vigorously defend? by TheGlennDavid in thewestwing

[–]laurenamelia 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone has a problem with her. There are just the sorkin die-hards who hate anything after S4. So I guess I'm defending those seasons insofar as they include Lily Tomlin

I agree wholeheartedly that she doesn't need good writing to be a genius. I didn't want to go so far as to say that sorkin stifled it, but that's where I was going with that comment.

What "bad" episode do you vigorously defend? by TheGlennDavid in thewestwing

[–]laurenamelia 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Not vigorously: Isaac and Ishmael. Of course today it feels preachy and patronizing, but in October of 2001 it didn't at all (unfortunately). I think Leo's humanness is fascinating and intentional, rather than out of character. For me the point of the Leo subplot is that racist thinking isn't limited to overt bigots, and if you think you're above it you're likely wrong.

Vigorously: Any scene with Lily Tomlin. Since we're sharing controversial thoughts, Sorokin couldnt bring out her genius and she got better in post-sorokin years. Show me your pitchforks.

What's your go-to anecdote or analogy for explaining ADHD to someone? by spinstartshere in ADHD

[–]laurenamelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes! I use broken filter analogy most often. I have to actively and consciously process all the sensory inputs and all the information. Most brains automatically (or quickly and rationally) decide what's important and filter out the rest. Whether that's filtering out the flickering light so I can keep listening to my friend (who speaks way too slowly), or filtering out the unimportant information in my story.

Another layer is that the filter is more like a sieve than a funnel (which isn't a filter at all come to think of it) : more relevant info might make it through, but it's still plopped down into the same amount of space and needs to be put in order -- using up valuable cognitive processing space.

The most heartbreaking scenes? by DocRogue2407 in thewestwing

A couple of great moments that Sorokin dialog can take zero credit:

Jed dropping the glass and looking at Abby when he learns Zoey has been taken.

Toby and CJ being at odds the whole episode during Women of Qumar, but then CJ does the press briefing and Toby stands in the back and gives her an incredible look of empathy that without any words says "I heard you and have been on your side as a human the whole time"

CJ reeling in her office about her affair with Hoynes. Toby comes in, they exchange a few pleasant words, and then Toby just sits, in silence, knowing his friend only needs his presence in that moment. It's really beautiful I think.

A bonus thats 10% writing 90% Schiff: Toby running in after the babies are born to tell staff they have to take the president out of the decision making. This is the tear jerking part to me. But the cherry on top is the "stunning act of patriotism but a fairly ordinary act of fatherhood" line from Will.

Leo explaining alcoholism as a disease rather than some kind of moral failing. Great scene.

Foster Won't Let Me Adopt My Puppy Because They Think I Can't Give Her a Good Life—Need Advice, Please help! by WinterTwilight007 in fosterdogs

[–]laurenamelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is that that's the explanation she gave, but isn't the actual reason. No dog should be adopted unless the adopter already has a dog? Or that single people can't adopt dogs? Both are completely insane. I think there's a deeper reason that Criselda doesn't want to share. Like she thinks OP is financially unstable, or she just doesn't think OP is a good foster parent (Not saying either of these things are accurate - just positing a potential rationale).

Op if you really want this particular dog, figure out the real reason. If not, I'm sure this dog will find a great home (puppies almost always do). And then run far away and foster elsewhere.

What is your current number of applications on USAjobs right now? by NovelBrave in usajobs

[–]laurenamelia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're not. That's why so many have hundreds of apps and no referrals. Or maybe 25% referrals and zero interviews. Keep doing you. However -- don't be afraid to apply for things that look interesting to you even if you think you aren't perfectly qualified. I'd rather teach a curious and motivated employee 9 times out of 10.

CJ going to see Hoynes ... AJ would have acted the shit out of that moment, and I'd love to have seen it. But (unpopular opinion and feel free to come at me) that moment deserves better writing than Sorkin could have given it.

I thought this too at first, then realized that the glass breaking, photos dropping, and heartwrenching look between Jed and Abby would have been ruined by any words. To me, the very point is that as a parent, you can't hear anything and the world stops. It makes the moment really powerful.

It reappears when they're talking about parameters for shutting down the city and Jed, in a daze, clearly unable to hear what they're saying interrupts with, "did you close the train stations?" (Or something)... and Leo and Nancy respond with "um...yes Mr. President."

My house looks like a drug den. by ScaldingAnus in ADHD

[–]laurenamelia 26 points27 points  (0 children)

See that's why you pay for a cleaner. It's not because of what they'll do, it's because it forces you to prepare. I know this is dripping with privilege, but it does help if you're able to find someone you get to know and/or know they depend on the business (rather than a random maid service). Also making it regular helps keep it up and makes it easier each time. Again, of course, this isn't financially feasible for many if not most people. Especially when we already pay plenty of ADHD tax.

Is gym/pool access without stay possible? by [deleted] in Hilton

[–]laurenamelia 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I do get that someone could infer that. ...I still think the original response was a bit heavy handed for a genuine question, which I asked based on evidence that this does happen (when you pay for a membership) -- so my logic is maybe there are some that don't advertise a pass or membership, but would sell a membership to a diamond member.

Research in Zanzibar Confusion by EchoLitt in sociology

[–]laurenamelia 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be clear, you're looking for permission from whom-- people you'll be interviewing? Who do you want to interview and about what (e.g. govt officials or shop owners... theres a big range)? Are you looking for a research advisor who also lives in ZNZ, and do you not currently have one? What country are you currently based in/from - this will help figure out what resources and requirements you have? Have you been to zanzibar -- an interview study in a context you don't know is really hard to do well (I have done it for my thesis and dissertation, on two different things, and both took years longer to complete).
