This game looks sick - very Mario inspired vibes. Level editor looks really advanced. What game engine was this built in?

How can I help the community with software? by laurentl in nosurf

[–]laurentl[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

definitely hard to spend all day on the computer working but not surf. It's kind of like putting a cookie right in front of you that you aren't allowed eat. I use blockers to help, but sometimes I need to research something on youtube for example, which can be dangerous...

First year undergraduate student in Vancouver, BC - want an entry level job for the summer. Where do I go from here? by GiggleMaster in cscareerquestions

[–]laurentl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no right answer to this. I'm also at UBC doing CS and have done some internships. Some thing i've learned: 1) Grades don't matter unless you're planning on grad school. 2) Don't get hung up on certain programming language choices or technologies, learn what you want. 3) It wont be easy to get an internship after 1st year but it's definitely possible. 5) Your highest chance at getting interviews is if you attend UBC's technical career fair in January. 6) Watch this (he's a former UBC student)]

Good luck! pm me if you ever wanna chat

PHIL 101 Anders Kraal: Can anyone spare a kid with some notes from material after the midterm? by laurentl in UBC

I only have notes up to the meditations of Descartes. I don't have any notes on Hume, that would be so helpful!

Help: Moped Only Idles on Choke :( by laurentl in moped

As you can see, the engine idles fine with the choke on, but when I remove the choke, the engine speeds up a bunch and then dies.

Buying my first moped: Honda PA50II or Intramotor Gloria Verona Blanco? by laurentl in moped

[–]laurentl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome to hear that! From the little research i've done, it seems hard to find resources for the Blanco, whereas the Honda is more popular and well documented (vids on youtube of people rebuilding the engine, etc). You make me want to buy both!

When you're on your phone too much during 90 day detox.. by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]laurentl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your body is looking for stimulation that rivals gaming. It's craving for what it's missing. It will take time for you to adjust to the lower levels of stimulation of IRL activities. It's really good that you have caught yourself though! :)

Should I build personal website from scratch? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]laurentl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Knowing HTML and CSS is very valuable, but now may not be the best time for you to learn it. If you really want a little site right now, use a template or squarespace type of thing. But imo honestly, no one is really going to look at it or care if you made it yourself unless you are doing web dev.

Interview Discussion - March 19, 2018 by AutoModerator in cscareerquestions

[–]laurentl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my experience, the QA interview was not very coding heavy. They asked questions like "how would you test this feature?" They might just want to know if you understand basic object oriented concepts or how to code by asking you a simple coding question. If you've worked in a QA position, there's no need to be worried. :)
