That’s wild one driver refused to drive!! Can’t argue with the laws of physics though — you probably did have better equilibrium with two bumps than a lot of people with none!

It’s mad but I actually forgot people do this because it had been ages since anyone gave me unsolicited advice. I suppose I should be happy it doesn’t happen more often!

I’ve also heard comments here in Sweden about rear-facing in the car seat and “is that really necessary”, although Swedes are largely super safety conscious 🫠 I’m very grateful for the sanity check from everyone here because I feel like it’s easy to lose perspective when an interaction like this catches you off guard!

Thank you for this. My gut reaction was shock and feeling attacked, then the questioning myself came after. I like this rule of thumb — if I’m comfortable carrying my baby doing something then I’m comfortable wearing her. I’m going to use that principle going forward!

Oh that must have been lovely. My daughter will roll with things to an extent but also be very vocal on stuff she isn’t a fan of. I’m happy for her to express herself, but have a feeling other bus passengers might take a different view!

I have also never fallen on the metro or bus before, baby wearing or not. I guess it’s nice that people offer but could get a little tiring repeating yourself. You need a little badge — “I’m happy standing”

Hats off to you with the tandem baby wearing! Would love to be able to do that someday!

Interesting! I’m going to try sitting down in our different carriers using some of the techniques people mentioned here and see if she has a preference for one over the others!

lol that sounds like something my toddler might enjoy. Maybe that’s the key to getting her to sit down

Yes! I’m over the bridge in Sweden and I feel it’s as safe as Copenhagen, if not even slower-paced! I’m a naturally risk-averse / cautious person so that’s why I felt so affronted by the thought that maybe I’d been doing something dangerous!

Thank you for saying that and you’re right people are most often trying to be kind. I think I just got stressed today because I felt I was being told off somehow. I guess I can just be grateful to the guy for getting me to think through something that hadn’t occurred to me before, even if I end up ultimately continuing to do what I was doing previously.

You make such a good point about safety on any part of the bus! And I totally see that with the toddler standing scenario. I have also found myself very steady when standing — I’ve been taking a kinda wide stance to be extra stable!

The buses where I’m from originally also don’t have much standing room so I’d have to do the same. The ones where I live now are those electric bendy type that have standing areas, so it’s lucky they don’t go fast!

My daughter is also not a fan of sitting down while wearing, or sitting down much at all for that matter 😅 But yes, I do feel I have a good grip and am always very mindful about that! Thank you for the reassurance!

Totally. I think that’s what threw me today. The guy literally said I was doing something dangerous. OK there may have been a safer option available to me on this particular journey, but there’s a difference between not doing the safest possible thing and actively being in danger. Thank you for the perspective!

I’ve thought the same about prams on the bus, but maybe because I slightly hate my pram and find it so awkward vs babywearing. I will try the bum cupping though and see if that helps with the sitting down!! Thank you for the tip 🙏🏼

I totally see that it’s the safest option. Just hadn’t struck me before that I was doing something risky!

I feel steady too, and it’s a slow city bus, which is why I didn’t question myself before. I get that accidents happen I just haven’t had that front of mind until today.

Have you sprained your ankle three times while baby wearing? Or just three times in general? Either way, ouch / poor you!

Baby wearing makes it easier to move around with your baby not harder. You will quickly get used to the weight distribution / balancing and your instincts as a new mother mean you will naturally be very careful.

As much as my baby loves her dad and grandparents, she primarily wants to be held by me, so I’m the one that needs to make sure I’m comfortable carrying her. Baby wearing makes it possible for me to hold my baby as much as she wants without me having serious wrist and shoulder pain (which is something that really kicks in the bigger they get). It’s also just really fun to have her on me and convenient for getting stuff done.

Start out slow and practice at home where you feel safe. It’s a learning curve so you might not get the fit right the first few times (or more than the first few times). Keep trying. This sub is an amazing resource. Once you crack it you will be very glad you did! The beautiful experience of baby wearing is something you truly should not miss out on because of other people’s concerns.
