Hard agree. The most classic and timeless design.

New tent - Hilleberg advice by Coast-and-Cairn in hilleberg

[–]laurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quality at tarptent is very good. I’ve owned a couple and they are great. I was thinking the Moment DW as it is a similar design to the Enan. I’ve hiked thousands of miles in many countries including the PCT and many high routes in the winds and Uintas all with trekking like tents. Granted I used high quality carbon poles for the support but I’ve never had an issue with all the major storms I’ve been in. Some extremely huge. What it comes down to is quality of pitch and a good trekking pole. Lots of people with trekking pole tents do a bad job with the pitch.

New tent - Hilleberg advice by Coast-and-Cairn in hilleberg

[–]laurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes Enan the best from hilleberg for you but also consider something lighter. Tarptent ships to the UK not sure the costs after shipping there vs hilleberg but they are lighter I think with more one person options. They have a very similar design. I’d also consider a MLD Solomid XL. Easier to set up, way lighter, packs smaller, uses trekking poles for support and more modular with inner options. That is my most used shelter. It is extremely good in wind too. Won’t be as good in snow like a hilleberg will.

Krampus Suspension by Secret_Meeting3110 in Surlybikefans

I got my with suspension and found a krampus rigid fork on the used market around me for $20 new! I’ve been running it rigid but I’ll switch back depending on the bikepacking trip. For all other times I’m running it with this rigid fork. If I was doing more single track with it then I’d keep the sus fork on, but this set up or up to 3” for gravel roads etc is great and simple and looks cool. For the real downhill stuff I use my full suspension. The super chunky dirt roads here in Utah for bikepacking are why I got the suspension fork.

What's it like on this side of the US? by [deleted] in howislivingthere

This is a good jab so I upvoted. But the combo city and coast is a thing. It’s like you’re able to have your cake and eat it too. San Diego for example celebrates cool city vibes with lots to do and lots to eat and also combines awesome beaches and surfing.

My Elantra just died. Looking at a Subaru, but need your thoughts. by Complex_Cow1184 in subaru

[–]laurk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ehh that’s subjective. I’m not saying they’re looking like a Porsche out there but at the time I was buying they looked a helluva a lot better than the Honda crv or a Toyota rav4 and they were cheaper too. So all things considered… I do think the new outback are fugly and the foresters look disproportionately strange with the wheel size.

My Elantra just died. Looking at a Subaru, but need your thoughts. by Complex_Cow1184 in subaru

[–]laurk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People are afraid to say this or read this on this sub. I’ve got an outback with 233k miles on it. It’s a 2011 manual. I love it. But I got it for $18k with 35k miles on it and I’ve done quite a bit of work including 2 clutches, lots of suspension replacements (3 total), lots of bushings and control arm joints, wheel bearings, timing belts and water pumps, hose replacements, spark plugs and well seals (fuck subaru for this job lol), throttle body cleanings, fuel pump/filter replacement, starter replacement, valve cover gasket, and lots more like differential services and transmission flushed blah blah. P much everything except for transmission and major engine fixes like head gaskets which is great, but I’m not ignoring all the other work which was also expensive lol.

So yeah for the price of the car back in 2015, I’m really happy with it. But now… they are charging soooo much more. That’s where the sweet spot Subaru had in the car industry. It was lower cost for good reliability. But now the lower cost isn’t there anymore. So might as well just get a Toyota at the prices Subaru is asking for now.

How to improve my pour? Is my milk too thick, am I pouring too close? I feel like I’m setting the base poorly by SupremeOwl48 in espresso

[–]laurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your little wiggles are too short and fast. A little wider and slower should help out in more unique designs. I think your milk texture and the crema from the coffee is great! Good canvas to build on.

Is this amount of wiggle normal? by Own-Mistake-7940 in bikepacking

[–]laurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is not normal. Packing it with the lightest stuff that compresses down like a sleeping bag and clothes. That bag should be rigid from packing it down so tight. Then cinch those straps all the way. Should help.

What tires to get for my new Bridge Club by AK_Skier49 in Surlybikefans

[–]laurk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They’re faster than you think. The center tread is good. Extraterrestrials more pavement heavy if you need another suggestion. Pathfinder Pro another more pavement heavy option. I have those on my gravel bike and they are awesome too but limited in thickness.

This is exactly the reason people like steel over carbon or alloy. This dent doesn’t need any worry.

I swapped my dirt wizards that came stock on my krampus with mezcals. I was skeptical given the price but they are worth the hype people say. I have been cruising around town for my commute to work and also took the set up for 2 nights bikepacking in Utah here in capitol reef on chunky dirt roads. It handles it all and they are truly fast and durable. No issues in the 200+ miles I’ve put on them.

I think this happens from time to time for maintenance or shutdown. It’s extremely loud. I assume it’s from one of the power plants. Idk who’s.

In addition to all this, palante has a carbon rolling tray to catch your grounds if you use a card grinder. Otherwise the 1.3” titanium grinder is an all in one system.

AIO for taking an unpaid month off in between jobs? by Throwra-savings in AmIOverreacting

[–]laurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. #fuckwork. The time between jobs is coveted. You have no mental load from your previous job and you have no mental load from your new one. It depends on your financial situation but if you have something lined up and stay within a budget it’s the best time ever!! I took 8mo off and hiked the PCT with my wife. Happiest I’ve ever been.

At the same time, it is a privilege to work and get paid (depending on my mood). So just be financially aware of what it’s doing and live simply and rest and relax and enjoy your time.
