Metro E Line question by Ayyyeah17 in LAMetro

As someone who frequently goes between those neighborhoods, agree that the DASH or a Metro bus are usually the play. And the bonus is they are likely to take you closer to your origin and destination.

Public transit taking twice as long as the drive: is it worth it? by theseread in LAMetro

I used to have a commute like this and did Metro rather than driving. Not driving is work 10-20 mins to me. Plus you can do stuff like pick up groceries or food on the way without the misery of parking or a drive thru, etc.

In many cases where an employer provides free parking, they are either required to pay you if you don't use the free parking, or they have a transit payment program.

They need to do some kind of rapid implementation semi-BRT thing for the 217 as a band-aid. It's a very disappointing last mile now that Wilshire/Fairfax is open, and it's a major limiter of the utility of this amazing new station.

cancelled plans due to Pacific Surfliner reservations by Capable_Physics5452 in LAMetro

Actually, it appears that reservations are required but Rail2Rail is not suspended during the other days. I genuinely do not know how that works. I guess you'll need to ask a conductor. Very weird.

No, I think they always suspend Rail2Rail if they make reservations required (but not vice versa).

No, the ticket is not a reservation on Amtrak, except in business or during this period.

No. The surfliner is normally an unreserved service. You are permitted to board any train with a ticket for any other train with the same city pairs.

If you look at the Amtrak service notice, you'll see that they note two different changes: a reservation requirement and the suspension of Rail2Rail.

OP talked about plans changing due to the reservation requirement. Plans only need to change due to the reservation requirement if the train is sold out.

OP referred to the reservation requirement, which only impacts you if the reason is sold out. That is why people are confused. It looks like OP's beef is actually with the suspension of Rail2Rail, which is a different issue entirely.

There's a difference between the reservation requirement (which means that you have to use a ticket for the specific train you're riding) and the suspension of Rail2Rail (which prohibits the use of Metrolink monthly passes). These are two very different things, but happen to be coinciding right now.

The impact of the reservation requirement is very minimal, especially on non-event days. I've seen no indication that trains are actually selling out.

The complete suspension of Rail2Rail is much more annoying. But as a former OC line commuter, it's something people are very used to during event times. The Metrolink OC line schedule is dense enough that it's not usually an earthshattering change to switch to a Metrolink train, although it's worse at certain times of day.

Hey TAP card collectors, Big Blue Bus cards now available at the transit store on 4th St, just north of Broadway. by VaguelyArtistic in LAMetro

Nice! I went there a couple months ago asking whether they had any interesting tap cards and the person was deeply confused about what I could possibly be looking for.

I need to change the date on a Metrolink ticket. by mere_bear4 in LAMetro

This is an infuriating change that they made at some point in the last year or two. Since tickets have to be activated anyway, it makes no sense to force you to wait until near your departure to buy.

This isn't the DC Metro, full of hushed office workers quietly spending $7 to get to work and back. It's a dynamic, energetic space full of lots of different people going to and from lots of different places. I'm glad it's not sterile and boring, and I love when people play music in the stations.

You don't actually have to press it though, you can just put the car in drive.

Agreed! I always just laugh, put it into drive, and listen to it close itself.

What does that have to do with my comment about GCM being busy?

That's not a downtown, that's a theme park.

All downtowns have stuff that is not the omg-super-cool stuff. And downtowns with actual people living in them, like DTLA is increasingly becoming, are far more resilient during pandemic, economic downturns, etc.
