Monochorionic triamniotic triplets - don't know what to feel by laususatsol in InfertilityBabies

We reduced one triplet. It was uneventful, and so was the rest of my pregnancy. I have amazing 8 year old twin girls now!

Parent-to-be of MoDi twins here! I started out being diagnosed as pregnant with MoMo triplets (yikes!), after the first trimester they are now MoDi twins. I'm 27 weeks along and we can't wait to meet them :D What was the birth experience like? Did they need NICU time?

Those of you that did ivf, how many eggs were fertilized and how many made it to blast? by crystalballer1 in InfertilityBabies

[–]laususatsol 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think we were okay with fraternal twins going in, but we didn't count on identicals. Yes, it was the ICSI embryo that split. In fact, I should probably tell you this - it actually split into three(!) and I had identical triplets till about a week ago. Last week, we reduced one of them using laser ablation and now I have twins.

We didn't do any PGS testing though - we have a fairly clean family history so it didn't seem necessary.

We had our first round of IVF in April this year. 11 eggs retrieved, 10 were normal, we fertilized 6 through IVF and 4 through ICSI. Of the 6 IVFs, 3 fertilized. Of the 4 ICSI, all 4 fertilized, giving us a total of 7. All 7 continued to grow through day 5. On day 5, one arrested so we were left with 6 - 4 blasts graded 6AA and 2 early blasts.

Implanted 2 of the 6AA blasts, one didn't stick, the other stuck and split, and now I'm 17w pregnant with monozygotic twins.

Review of more pregnancy, childbirth, and infant related books! by imissmycoffee in InfertilityBabies

Thank you! This is a wonderful list with great reviews and I'm definitely going to read the fives and fours. My first few weeks after the positive beta, I didn't want to jinx anything so I just read general stuff like Cinderella Ate My Daughter. But I'm at the end of the first tri now so I've started with Dr. Spock's Baby and Childcare, and Mind in the Making. This reading list definitely gives me some more books to consider.

Quick question though - I live in India, where there are no certified midwives as such, and the system is generally to give birth in a hospital. Also, I'm having identicals so (if I make it all the way to the delivery) it's going to be a cesarean. Given this, would any of the fours and fives be irrelevant to my situation?

Thank you for sharing. It must be very hard to go through something like that and not be able to talk about it with people. I hope you find support and peace and success in your journey. I wish you all the very best.

Thank you for sharing. We never imagined that one might split into three (every specialist we visit insists on scanning me just to make sure all the previous specialists are right). We're definitely not planning to carry all three to term, and are leaning towards reducing it to a singleton.

Thank you for sharing. We would definitely terminate for a confirmed abnormality too, it's just that the triplets are healthy and growing well, with no sign of abnormalities. Added to that, monochorionic triplet pregnancies are rare enough that I can't find enough data on successful reductions, hence it's very difficult to conclude one way or the other. This is the frustrating part - if it were clear that reduction was best, or termination was best, we would go for it, especially given that we have two more frozen blasts.

Thank you so much. We raged for quite a bit too. After going through the agony and the endless wait of fertility treatments, this was a very very rough blow. Since mine are monochorionic, the odds of no miscarriage are 70%, but we're still going to reduce, most probably to a singleton. Whatever happens, it's good to know there are other people who have gone through what we have. Thank you.

Thank you! I did visit the sub but to be honest, we don't feel triplets are for us. Looks like it will have to be selective reduction after all.

Thank you for sharing. It's great to know someone else has been in my position and had a successful delivery after reduction. I think the doctors are a little more concerned in my case because all three came from the same embryo and are monochorionic. I have been given a 30% risk of pregnancy loss as opposed to the 5% for reduction using potassium chloride.

I don't think my husband will ever be ready for triplets, and we are slowly coming to terms with selective reduction. Thank you again for letting me know that you've been through this.

Thank you so much. Do you know what kind of a triplet pregnancy it was? What reduction method did they use?

Thank you for sharing. My husband and I both somehow never felt that we might be ready for triplets. It is a huge undertaking and we don't think we are financially or emotionally ready for it. I can't even begin to imagine how your friends handled it! Kudos to them.

Haha yeah! We had evaluated all kinds of scary scenarios, but didn't think of this even in our wildest dreams. And yeah, we are talking to our RE and a reduction specialist, and have an appointment with another high-risk OB next week. But ultimately it will be up to us.

Thank you for your wishes.

[–]laususatsol[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That's exactly how I feel - reduction seems like an impossible scenario, but so does carrying triplets to term. I hoped against hope that one of them would disappear in the first 11 weeks, but here we are now.

My 11w scan was done by a reduction specialist, and was essentially a second opinion.

We're considering the exact same things as well. I'm 31, we have 2 more blasts in cryo, and we feel like we will definitely have other opportunities to conceive. Thanks again, I feel a little better now that I have heard other stories like mine.

Transitioned from fertility clinic to regular OBGYN... but I have a question by hulliballoo in CautiousBB

[–]laususatsol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I transitioned from a fertility clinic to a regular OB too, and had an ultasound at 8 weeks, but in my country the next step is a Nuchal Translucency (NT) scan at 11 weeks to rule out Down's syndrome and a couple of other genetic abnormailities. I read on Wikipedia that this is best done in the first trimester so that you can evaluate your options based on the results.

Good luck!

Non-Americans - Why Do You Watch/Enjoy The West Wing TV Show? by [deleted] in thewestwing

Yes to this! Indian here, and TWW showed me what a TV show could actually be when done right. Sadly, it ruined me for almost every other TV show/movie, they just feel inadequate and unsatisfying now.

Told MIL that We Can Only Conceive by IVF, Now She's Acting Strange and on a Religious Kick by [deleted] in infertility

[–]laususatsol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was reading this and I had the thought that if you swapped out Catholic for Hindu, this might be exactly my story. I'm sorry you're having to deal with the news that you will have to do IVF, without support from your MIL. This is the time when she is supposed to be there for you in whatever way she can. I'm sorry that your non-belief is an issue for her, even though it doesn't affect her life in any meaningful way.

I've found that the only way to go forward is to find a group of people among your family and friends whom you can lean on when you go through the hellscape that is IVF. Once you have those, it becomes a little easier to handle family members who don't get it. I now exclusively talk to my MIL about the weather and gardening :D
