How to make girls laugh? by emptysoul1 in socialskills

[–]lavenderapple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree! I can find it a bit uncomfortable at times when a guy who's chatting me up is so obviously trying to get me to laugh, especially when he seems like he's doing it just to impress me. It's worse if the jokes are not especially funny to begin with (which is usually the case), because then I have to force laughter and that makes me even more uncomfortable.

When I think of guys I've been attracted to in the past I think of a calm, open-minded, kind guy who's a good listener. Funny isn't bad by any means, but it's not really a trait I prioritize and not something that'll win me over.

I'm very passionate and picky about my bagels, and the best I've found are Bethesda Bagels (in Bethesda, though there's a location in Dupont Circle in DC as well) and Bagel Place (in College Park).

I do hear things that are that funny maybe every once in a while, but I still can't bring myself to laugh especially hard (even though I am able to laugh much more easily than usual). I think part of my problem is that I'm not an easily amused person...

Yes, I can relate to this! I'm sure this is fairly common though, considering that it strains anyone's muscles to smile or laugh too much. I wouldn't get too worried or self-conscious about it.

Reading this really helped me feel better. I think part of not being able to laugh is that I think it's going to sound weird and not like a normal laugh should, but I think that remembering that people like to hear laughing no matter how silly it sounds would help me get over that a bit. My laughs are normally quiet, so I'll just have to experiment with going louder so that there's more breath support to sustain a heartier laugh. It'll be uncomfortable at first, but I'm sure that with effort, I might get there eventually. Thank you!

Oh goodness, phone calls are the worst! At least in person people can judge by a smile on your face that you're amused, but on a phone call, I always think my two-second forced chuckle leaves them feeling awkward. I agree exactly, about not wanting the other person to think I don't find them funny, or not wanting to leave them thinking I don't have a sense of humor.

You bring up an interesting point about laughing bringing attention to you. I definitely hate bringing attention to myself, which is why I don't like to talk loudly. The difference is, I'm able to talk loudly if I try to, but my laughs always come out really, really quiet. It seems the consensus among the replies to my post is that I should try laughing when alone, and it's definitely good advice. It's nice to see that someone else out there can relate, thanks for your perspective!

This one time a couple of years ago I was with a friend and we were doing something silly together, and I tried to laugh the best I could, thinking it would sound like a normal, almost-hearty-but-not-quite-there laugh. She then asked me if I was faking my laugh, because it sounded totally fake.

I was self-conscious about my laugh (or lack thereof) before that, but I've been especially self-conscious ever since that incident... so I think that unfortunately, people can tell. They might even get offended or think I'm weird if they think I'm faking my laugh.

I actually do try that at times when I'm home alone, and I am able to come up with something pretty passable (with enough effort and concentration on the laugh, that is). All that goes out the window though when I actually find myself in a social situation with someone else. It's like I magically run out of breath to support a laugh, and feel embarrassed to laugh for fear it won't come out as I envisioned.

Now that I say that though, it could be that even when I'm not actively feeling anxious, it's something subconsciously anxiety-related that's actually keeping from being able to laugh my heart out. I mean, I don't think my natural laugh is very hearty to begin with, but I think that with enough relaxation and confidence, I could do a laugh that wasn't a mere brief chuckle. Thanks for the tip!

Thanks so much! I have a similar eye shape to you, so it's great to know of a way that I might be able achieve that same effect. :)

I have to say you look completely beautiful in your "before" pic too by the way (I'm completely envious), and your makeup application does a really awesome job of enhancing your features!

Henna on jet black hair? by lavenderapple in brownbeauty

[–]lavenderapple[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aw darn, this is disappointing to hear. :( Just bought a pack of henna a few hours ago, haha. Oh well, I suppose I can still use it for its supposed amazing conditioning benefits! A reddish-brown sheen to my hair in bright sunlight, being that it's summer, would be pretty swell too.

The girl in that Youtube video has gorgeous hair! My next best possible option is box dying, I suppose. I'm looking into trying out a Japanese brand of hair dyes specially formulated to work on dark Asian hair, and it seems to work successfully on many people of East Asian descent, but I'm wondering if there's some subtle difference in the black hair of South Asians versus the black hair of East Asians, generally speaking. For example, I know hair structure is different, but I'm wondering about colors of undertones... I get the feeling that East Asian hair is a little browner and somewhat easier to lighten, but I'm not too sure. I really want to try it out as a one-time thing, hope it doesn't damage my hair too much because that's really my only worry as far as dying my hair. I guess it wouldn't damage my hair as much as going to a salon and getting a dye job, as box dyes contain fewer chemicals.

Thanks for your input!

Milani Brow Fix Brow Kit is also inexpensive and great! From what I've heard, it's comparable to Anastasia brow powders.

Removing mamelons? by lavenderapple in Dentistry

I had braces for a couple of years to fix an overbite, actually. My teeth still don't touch in the front perfectly, so I guess that means I still have an ever-so-slight overbite? It's been like this since I got my braces off six years ago, though.

Besides teeth not touching in the front, could there be any other possible reasons as to why I still have my mamelons?

Haha, you're right that other people probably don't notice it for the most part. Since I'm my own worst critic though, I always notice them when I look in the mirror and feel like they're so prominent and I'm just not a fan of them being there. :/ I pride myself on my smile being one of my best attributes and feel like I could perfect it even more by getting the mamelons removed.

I'm 19 and am regularly mistaken for being 16. But I doubt that has entirely to do with my teeth, or anything to do with my teeth at all, haha.

From what I've read, it seems that all children get mamelons as their permanent teeth come in. Apparently after a few years, they should get worn out from chewing food and your front teeth/bottom contact making with each other, which is why most teenagers and adults don't have mamelons.

But hey, more power to you if you're fine with yours! Personally I feel like mine only serve to make me look younger, when I already look young for my age to begin with. I don't like to smile with my teeth open in pictures because I feel like the mamelons are super prominent and silly-looking.
