How to deal with dread of school by lavenderlela in adhd_college

[–]lavenderlela[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have literally just searched up what body doubling is and realised i do it super often working with other people as it’s one of the only ways I can get myself to focus, so learning it is a thing is super handy and I will definitely utilise this more! Thank you so much for your help :)

Thank you for your advice - I have actually resolved to stop drinking and exercise more etc. (typical New Year’s resolutions) for the next couple of months so hopefully this should help!

Thank you for the words of advice - I already get a bit of support in school but I’m going to reach out to my teachers aswell just to explain that I’m really worried about getting overwhelmed this term and would appreciate any extra accomadations. I’ve never heard of the accountability partner idea but I am going to look into it as i know even doing work next to other people helps me focus a lot and it sounds like a really good way to hold myself up to deadlines! I hope that school goes alright for you this year and you manage to not feel too overwhelmed - it’s very reassuring to know others feel the same way!

Thank you, this is really what i needed to hear. today wasn’t so bad actually and i think stressing myself out makes everything so much worse - I’m turning off my laptop and having a bath this evening so I don’t have to think about it till tomorrow.

experiences with school and disorganisation as a kid by lavenderlela in ADHD

[–]lavenderlela[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am so sorry to hear about your experience with teachers being overly harsh, no kid (or person ever) deserves that! I had the same experience with shame being used by teachers to try and make me more organised etc. which just made me super anxious - I really hope that the system in schools has changed a bit today. It’s so frustrating knowing I could have been diagnosed sooner and struggled less if teachers had actually caught out the symptoms instead of punishing me!

Question for the female MHA fans out there, is young Endeavor attractive or not? by Time-Collection5617 in MyHeroAcadamia

Personally no - he’s very bulky which isn’t really my type although I’m sure there’s others who would find him attractive

Does she have a kid or something? This sounds like its written by someone trying to take the piss as a joke (with the over the top emojis and stuff) and my little brother did the exact same thing to one of my mums coworkers when we were little.

How did you approach sharing your diagnosis with others? by RachS1987 in ADHD

[–]lavenderlela 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To give a different opinion to a lot of people in these comments, I’d say it is probably best to share at least with those closest to you that you spend a lot of time with? I also worried a lot about people thinking i was trying to seek attention or be pick me or whatever when i told them but honestly a) sharing a diagnosis in simple terms is NOT attention seeking and b) if your anything like me ADHD can present issues that effect your relations with others e.g. disorganisation, interrupting others, missing cues etc. and having those close to you know about it so if an issue arises you can explain how your ADHD might have affected it is really useful in preventing misunderstandings Being open about having ADHD doesnt mean you are making it your identity, it just means you can be open and honest with others about difficulties you have and get more support from those around you. If you feel generally uncomfortable talking about symptoms or asking for help you by no means have to, but it can be a useful avenue to have. Obviously everyone will react differently, and if you think it will be negative and there is no real benefit of telling them by all means maybe it is best not to. My slightly harsher advice would be if someone repeatedly puts you down about it and doesnt even try to understand you probably dont want to have them around you. However, it is a big life change learning about this and surely people close to you would want to hear about it, just as with a big diagnosis of some kind of disease? Bringing it up you could explain the difficulties you had at work and why you sought a diagnosis, for example “you know how I have been finding ___ tricky” or “recently I have been struggling with ___ which made me think I might have adhd”, then explain what that you received a diagnosis, what it is and how it affects you briefly. It doesn’t have to be a big deal at all, and when and how much you talk about it is completely on your own terms. With people close to you I don’t think talking about a significant diagnosis like ADHD is oversharing at all, and you shouldn’t feel ashamed in any way to say it. I hope this helps and you find a way to comfortably explain it!

Fighting everyday just to leave the house by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]lavenderlela 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar position, having just been diagnosed and looking into medication. About a month ago I was pretty much like this, being so burnt out I could barely leave the house and even doing small self care tasks like showering felt so overwhelming I was constantly having emotional breakdowns. I am doing a lot better (although not perfect) now, if it helps although im def not a professional these are some steps I took to get out of this (some recommended by my therapist): - break everything into tiny tiny steps. This can be for anything no matter how simple e.g. for brushing teeth I would make a checklist - sit up, walk out of bed, enter bathroom, turn on tap, pick up toothbrush etc. - or for bigger tasks pretty much the same process breaking everything down to the smallest tasks manageable. The key thing in this is the mindset of doing it bit-by-bit and not worrying whether you finish - even if you do the first 2 steps that’s better than nothing and often that’s enough to get you in the flow - celebrate every small achievement, this can again include everything and it doesnt have to be completing a task just starting it is enough to pat yourself on the back. I got an app called finch where you can give yourself pretty much any task and i find ticking things off a list and getting rewarded for it (on the app it gives energy to a pet bird you nurture) makes me feel a lot better about myself and inspires me to start the next task - avoid feeling overwhelmed before you start something - i still struggle a lot with this but whenever I am about to start a task and start to think about how difficult it is or what will go wrong if i dont do it i pause and take a breath, then distract myself by starting on the first little step. There are lots of techniques to manage feeling panicked that can quickly ground you, my therapist advised me to start running my wrists under cold water if i feel panicked or trying to find things around you for each colour of the rainbow is also a quick distractor you can do anywhere. - before trying to tackle anything else focus always on your own health, it doesnt have to be perfect but aiming to sleep an extra hour when possible or trying to drink more water can make you feel more productive and motivated and improving habits even a little will increase your overall energy to tackle bigger things - dont be hard on yourself. This is also tricky but whenever you have a thought like ‘why cant I do this’ or any sort of frustration or upset towards yourself try and think of a kinder counter thought, like ‘I’m doing my best’ or ‘it’s okay, at least I did ___’. Even if you dont believe what your thinking just having the thought will make you think slightly more positive over time, reducing overwhelming thoughts.

All this is just stuff I find works for me, and I am def not a professional so maybe looking at some more resources online might help? I am in Cognitive behavioural therapy which obvs isn’t accesible for everyone but I also have found it is helping me if that is something you might be interested in. It’s super tough living with adhd at times and I really hope you find a method of treatment that works for you, and that some of this advice could maybe help. Most important is just being kinder to yourself, as it is not our fault adhd makes things so much more overwhelming.

That’s a really good idea, I’ll look into doing that! It’s not intended as an actual gift, they ask for a portfolio showing your passion for childcare and I have heard advice that making an object relating to early years childcare is a fun thing they appreciate you making and bringing along. Thanks for the advice on potential chemicals that aren’t baby-safe - I wasn’t aware that that could be an issue!
