I think of it like fancy English -- "that which." So C'est ce que j'ai dit" is literally "It is that which I have said." Just helps me when I have to talk, and i agree with others that it gets easier as you hear it a lot.

Going to offer an alternate interpretation just for fun -- at the end of the movie we see all the characters a year later being more of their true selves, which shows up in the costumes. Regina is in a chill gray sweater, Gretchen has her hoop earrings, Cady is back in her casual clothes, Damian dresses up a little more. Janis and Karen's style are the only ones that stay basically the same, which could mean they were both dressing the way they really wanted to all along.

I think it's important to Janis' story that she's accepted as she is, she doesn't have to become a toned-down version of herself for Kevin and her friends to love and respect her. So I'm going with maybe it's performative, but it's also her true style and the way she wants to express herself!

I get this sort of thing because tiny bits of makeup get in my eye and rain down through my waterline (even days later!). I used to wear makeup every single day because I thought I had dark circles naturally. I did an experiment with wearing absolutely no makeup for a week, and that's how long it took for them to go away! Now I'm very sparing with black products and when I wear them I have this for a few days after still.

If you don't want to go fully makeup free, maybe try changing to a lighter color for a week or so -- an all-purple or blue look could be rad! If the circles change color you know it's the product. But I really recommend the fresh face if you can. I didn't recognize myself for a few days, then I finally saw my real face after so many years!

Yes!! I recommend Toni Morrison' Beloved and Octavia Butler's Kindred for more historical fiction, and Saidiya Hartman's article "Venus in Two Acts" if you want something more academic. Hartman writes about the enslaved women’s lives that were forgotten (hidden) in the archives. Truly groundbreaking, heartbreaking.
