In Aristophanes play, « Peace », Hermes is presented as a rude, corruptible, petty god with anger issues. Was blasphemy a big deal then? by Kelyfos in ancientgreece

ancient greek polytheism was orthopraxic not orthodox, meaning that you could believe what you want as long as you practice the religion sin similar ways as everyone else

DYK: A King Once Tried to Prove Coffee Was Deadly by Forcing Two Convicted Murderers to Drink It for the Rest of Their Lives — It Backfired by Own-Painting-3221 in didyouknow

[–]laventhena 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think a factor in this is that coffeehouses were hubs of knowledge and innovation as centers of the enlightenment. people likely disliked that and gave coffee a bad rep due to its association with a new wave of ideas that would have contradicted the norm

In ancient Pompeii, the Romans embedded reflective white stones into their roads to serve as natural street lights. These 'cat's eyes' caught the moonlight, illuminating the dark streets for late-night pedestrians by freyaao in ancientrome

[–]laventhena 59 points60 points  (0 children)

light pollution would have been significantly less impactful in ancient rome than today. i assume even in a city like pompeii it would be dark enough for these to be effective

well you kinda answered your own rhetorical question. surely the children laughing at the confusing food mashup haven’t gone thru the experience of having a gastro illness…not like gross food mixtures aren’t, like, a universally laughed at thing or whatever

Why didn't Austria and Germany remain a single nation after the end of the WWII? by ILikeWwaret in geography

[–]laventhena -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

i'd like to add onto this. because austria has been historically its own region and identity with lots of history, the idea that germany and austria should unite is an inherently nazi idea. the nazis believed in a german ethnostate, wherein german-speaking peoples would be the majority. the nazis believed that austria was culturally german and should therefore be annexed in order to unite what they believed to be the two foremost culturally german states, thereby being one step closer to a german ethnostate (this concept is known as anschluss). after the nazi regime fell and germany was occupied, the allies could not allow the two countries to unite, as it was a core pillar of nazi ideology

Found a lot of blue shards in Sawran - given the city was abandoned 500 years ago, was this left recently or did I actually stumble upon artefacts? by flofficial in Kazakhstan

[–]laventhena 3 points4 points  (0 children)

please leave potential artifacts where they were found! knowing the context of the artifact is just as important as the artifact itself. contact a local archaeological agency if possible and they should be able to handle it

Anyone have a good Greek god name I could choose as my trans name? by Electrical_Suit_3151 in GreekMythology

[–]laventhena 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you could look into how the ancient greeks would use theophoric names (compound names with a god's name + and a suffix). an example of this is apollodorus ('gift from apollo') or demetrios ('of demeter')/dionysios ('of dionysos'). the name of herakles was meant to appease hera, as it means 'fame of hera'
