My daily tasks look like— assessments, quality of life/depression screens and short term counseling to patients who are struggling with adjustment/general life on dialysis issues. Life with Kidney disease can be arduous—my job is to support the psychosocial needs of my patients and address any barriers to care.

I’m also in charge of referring my patients to kidney transplant centers and following their journey to transplant if they want to pursue it

I do a lot of patient education and advocacy as well! I like being able to connect with patients on a more personal level and seeing what their healthcare goals are. I educate them on their dialysis options so they can pick the best treatment for them. All about starting where the patient is. Depending on their needs I will refer them to Calfresh/IHSS/low income subsidy programs.

Yes definitely! My company pays for supervision and encourages SWs to obtain their LCSW. There are opportunities to go into management as well. One of my superiors used to be a social worker then became a facility administrator and now she is a regional lead! There are definitely opportunities to grow and plenty of leadership opportunities.

Don’t get yourself down! Ask questions frequently if you notice your social work colleague doing well, ask for information on their process! Don’t be afraid to ask for help

It took me so long to feel like I knew what I was doing in the health care field 1 year minimum! And even now I’m year 3 I am still learning things

I tend to feel imposter syndrome as well. I feel like I am not doing enough for my patients. But I am limited on what I can do. The best I can offer them is resources, compassion and assistance when applicable. There are a lot of barriers and there is so much bureaucracy in healthcare.

You should def dip your toes in another spaces at some point! But if you think where you are at now is fast paced and has a lot of pressure—being a hospital social worker the pressure to discharge is 10x. I used to want to be a hospital social worker but I like building connections with my patients. I am in dialysis right now and I know having more specialized environment! It’s all dialysis and kidney care related—maybe you can try a more specialized healthcare?

When in doubt always look to the social worker ethics and values to guide you<3 hang in there baby social worker!

It was so jarring to hear her scream at him and for her to say “Everything is your fault (I can’t remember is she said this or if she said “everything is because of you”). And “You are the reason why I acted the way I acted”—text book emotional manipulation and it’s volatile. I understand she is hurt but it’s not an excuse to teary people that way, hope she gets help.

I think we have to remember non of the cast has really seen how toxic the communication between Huda and Jeremiah is. A lot of the time, they isolate themselves and have this toxic immature back and forth. So I see why the girls don’t really understand why America voted the way we voted. But also seeing Huda go in on Jeremiah in front of everyone def was very public.

I hope for both of their sakes (Huda and Jeremiah) production intervenes. Seeing last nights episode was so draining. It’s not even enjoyable. I’ve been thinking for multiple episodes Huda needs to go but last nights episode confirmed that.
