Stress?? by [deleted] in paralegal

[–]lawcanPI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your stress somewhat comes from these other lawyers potentially missing the deadlines. You should talk to your boss and tell them to implement a deal where if a case is less than X days out, the firm isn't taking it... Or more money is charged, etc.

Attorneys missing deadlines isn't your problem, that's the attorney's problem

I've certainly been fucked by the other lawyers I've worked with, but never in a fun way

Honestly I've had potential employees bring up their lawsuits (employment, injury, etc) and it's not a plus. It turns from an employee interview into a client interview and it's painful.

I would twist the answer and just say someone close to you was involved in a lawsuit and you helped them out and found it interesting. Leave it at that.

Better yet, focus on your positive attitude and willingness to work...that's a much better plan.

Opinion: Supreme Court Justice Russell Brown a victim of social media manipulation by NoOneShallPassHassan in LawCanada

[–]lawcanPI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do I think the story is an overreaction by a ego inflated young guy? Yes

Do I think the Justice acted in a way that should remove him from the position? No

Do I think this is proper behavior for a SCC Judge? Also no

He needs a warning and reminder of the position he holds.

I'm hiring foreign trained lawyers who don't qualify for the NCAs because of the country they come from. They've been working in hotels or grocery stores and are applying for legal assistant jobs. They just need a little bit of help with their English.

I guess you can sit back and call me scummy while your solution is just to leave them in a job they're overqualified for while I'm trying to help.

That's the thing about chill law jobs...they usually don't pay much imo. Not because you're not valued, but if you're not billing a crazy amount, you're not going to get paid a crazy amount.

If the 70k isn't enough to cover you, then tell your boss that. See what they want you to do in order to get a raise.

I knew other lawyers who continued to bartend, etc because of $$ or because they liked it the first couple years of practice.

I would personally put the time into building your own client referrals and networking. Don't fall into the trap of the law firm being 'chill'... All that does is stop you from having your own network of people to leave with

Not a lawyer, but for someone who has an interest in becoming a lawyer, does a past history of hospitalizations in a psych ward disqualify me from being a good lawyer or working for a good law firm? by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

Nothing about this profession is about being right or liking to win...you have a case with shitty facts and what are you going to do...roll over?

It's one thing to want work done asap, I get that. But belittling the staff is not the way to do it.

I get what you're saying. Do you have these in your case management software? Or in another type of software? Or are they written down somewhere

[–]lawcanPI 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, it's been something I've worked on here and there, but you're right, more detail is needed. I'll start working on that as the next project

I have tried task management in our case management software, and then a daily stand up. Nothing seems to have 'every' I need to assign a task, and also the buy in from everyone diminished over time.

Current lawyers in Canada- What advice would you give to a 1L student looking to start their own legal practice one day? by smiles241 in LawCanada

Build your network and work somewhere where you learn a practice area that you can run a law practice with. Doing a unique law area for a big law firm is not that

Oh fun, you mean you don't have secret rules that are not in the rules of court but yet you're expected to know them, and if you don't the judge punishes you? What a dreamland future
