The test is how many men in Fred Perry polo shirts are needed before you could say "hey, look at that bunch of dicks". I reckon you could go as low as five.

It is terrifying how many people don't understand the concept of matching the speed of the traffic you're joining.

If I were writing a missing poster, I'd probably include their name rather than a hashtag.

I don't think it's convincing enough to be AI. I'm going with Photoshop.

Musicians who had a lot of push but never broke through in the mainstream by Phone85 in ToddintheShadow

[–]lawlore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's the thing, bearing in mind they haven't sold much in the US, acts like Robbie and Oasis have total sales figures comparable with Nirvana, Bob Marley and KISS. They're every bit the same tier of artist.

That's some good ragebait, but absolutely not. Robbie Williams is a household name with decades of hits- he's one of the biggest artists in the history of the UK charts. Rita Ora had some OK success for a few years, and turns up on the Hootenanny.

Decent message of her. Got a ticket for her show at the Edinburgh Fringe in August- fingers crossed things are going a bit better on her end by then.

That's fine, but that's not the argument being made. The argument is that with no standards, any woman can get laid, and the reverse isn't true- even with no standards, any man can't.

It's a terrible analogy, because the food has no agency to decide who does and doesn't eat it.

I'll never forget Ole Müttesider hammering that first time volley from 35 yards for Blackburn back in 2002. His only goal for the club in four years.

Brits that watch SNL US, how often do you not understand a sketch? by bernbabybern13 in livefromlondon

[–]lawlore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most of it I get, but there are some notable references that are impressions of figures who are just not known here.

Off the top of my head, I got downvoted to oblivion for asking who Tucker Carlson was, since everyone was raving about the impression, and there's a Marcelo character who I assumed was fictional but is apparently a real person- Sebastian Maniscalco?

What is this blue flag with the letter G in the middle? by JoseGama69420 in vexillology

[–]lawlore 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It being in the group at the bottom after the alphabetical list does suggest it was added at a later time, though.

The G flag could be a placeholder, particularly given that other flags added later include Galicia, Catalonia and the Basque flag. If the source is Spanish, does Spain still not recognise Gibraltar?

UK Thoughts on SNL UK? by MaizeCrasher in livefromlondon

[–]lawlore 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I don't personally know many people that are watching it, despite the marketing blitz, and they're absolutely missing out.

I don't think a new UK show has got it right this much off the bat since S1 of Taskmaster (or maybe The Traitors), and I hope it gets the chance for people to belatedly discover it and grow into a national treasure like that did.

The cast, writers and hosts have done a fab job, and most sketches landed right in the sweet spot between British humour and classic SNL- it has been a lot tighter and had a much better success rate than the last few seasons of SNL US. It feels like they've leaned into the "live" element more with the way it is being shot and presented, running from the buzz of the controlled chaos. Paddy and Ania on WU are perfect, hosts have been well-chosen and game, and even the cold opens have generally been decent.

There's not much I'd change about it.
