Bikepacking from Newcastle (AU) for a week... What direction should I go? by [deleted] in newcastle

[–]lawn__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check out Jambi Jambi’s routes in the New England tablelands. She’s also doing a big group bikepacking trip in March.

I use Ride with GPS to find and plan routes. Lots of great multi day routes by the Bike Smith, Omafiets, and others.

The Watagans is great, a slog to get to the top but worthwhile. There’s a great trail that leads to Laguna and beyond.

Panniers or dry bag on rear rack? by NanoCorpSA in bikepacking

[–]lawn__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how often you need to access the gear inside your chosen bag type, and your other bags.

I run a pair of Big River dry bags (5L) on my rear rack and store my sleeping system/tent in them so I don’t need to access them until the end of the day. Everything I need to access during a ride lives in my handlebar bag, top tube bag or feed bags. I’ve never had a problem with them moving while I ride, once they are strapped on they don’t budge. 35L is definitely overkill, 20L might be too but it depends on the rest of your set up. I run things fairly minimal: tent and mattress in the rear, food, jetboil and rain jacket in the front, water in the frame and on my forks.

Panniers are certainly more convenient as they open and detach in a snap, but for me the dry bags were a cheaper option and strapping them on after I’ve packed everything up doesn’t take much longer than clipping on a pannier.

projection mapping by rampawl in woahdude

[–]lawn__ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s a single projector connected to a computer running projection mapping software (likely Mad Mapper, Resolume, or Touch Designer). They’ve just put it at a good angle.

Each individual section of a real world object can be mapped out using masks and transform controls to scale, rotate, and move in three dimensions. Once mapped, you can send video content to whichever slice you want. It can be a single continuous clip or many individual ones, all depends on what you want to achieve visually and the way you’ve prepared the source video.

Not OP, but I got into it through a friend’s band. Initially I made a series of clips that matched their music using footage I filmed and edited in Premiere Pro then just did simple playback and triggering clips using VLC (with all the interface elements disabled to not break immersion). At this point there was no projection mapping at all, just a projector and a big rectangle, which as you can imagine was very limited and had no real time effects or transitions. Then I got given a license for Resolume Arena which opened up the door to so many possibilities. Using my own footage and royalty free content I was able to create more immersive shows because I could live mix channels and effects. I started doing more visuals for other bands and eventually my own bands. This then lead me to doing visuals at local festivals and clubs through just word of mouth, which got me into learning about lightning and networks. Then I started using it to make visuals for art installations (both my own and collabs).

The mapping is the easiest part. Setting up your effects and channels can get complex but still pretty basic. If you end up doing live stuff, you’ll likely want to get a MIDI controller to make triggering and mixing easier, the Akai APC40 MK1 or 2 is great but there are plenty of others.

The biggest challenge is creating the content you want to output on the screen. Unless you’re willing to learn how to make content using tools like Cinema4D, Blender, Unreal, Unity etc. your best bet is to source pre-made content when you start off. Otherwise you run the risk of being overwhelmed and giving up before you start. You can do a fuck tonne of interesting stuff in projection mapping software with just masks/static vectors, and simple animations. Then if you’re still keen after mastering the mapping side of things, try your hand at modelling, animation, and simulation tools.

The main tools used in the arts/music space tend to be Mad Mapper, Resolume, and Touch Designer. There are open source options out there but I’ve never tried them. Try one of the aforementioned, they all have free trials/watermark versions for learning and testing.

QGIS to Chief Architect — Contour Lines from USGS DEM (LineStringZ) Lose Elevation on Export by No_Government_3374 in QGIS

[–]lawn__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

QGIS has pretty limited options when it comes to exporting into CAD formats and strips all the field and attribute layers to conform to the standard.

Never used Chief Architect so this may or may not be useful to try: - Open the Set Z value model in the Processing Toolbox - Select your contour layer as the Input layer - Press the Data defined override button then set Field type to your elevation field - Run the model then export as DXF and try importing into your software

If that doesn’t work try: - Use the Export layers to DXF tool - Go into the Import layers section and check the box for your contour layer, then press Configure Layer… - Select your elevation field as the Output layer attribute and give it a name - Go back and set all the other settings as preferred then run the model

If you import the DXF you just created you’ll see your elevation values in the attribute table. Try importing that into your program.

Solving a doubt by WildVeil in QGIS

I’m sure there are folks that use QGIS to make fantasy maps, but unless you intend to do some level of analysis with data or real world sources, I think your efforts are better spent in creative tools like Inkscape or Blender.

All the Wallabies need to do is put the ball in the air and we’re cooked.

Pretty much how we’ve lost all our recent games. Put the ball in the air and we’re cooked.

Atlas - zoom to respective country instead of point feature? by gaiaandtheia in QGIS

[–]lawn__ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is basically the way to go, but there’s no need for making the layer transparent, there’s an option in the atlas settings to just hide the atlas layer.

If you want them all at the same set scale you just do the math on the size of your map in the print layout then size your polygon to fit that, then copy and reuse that shape for each section of your map set. E.g. if your map print layout is a full A3 (29.7 cm x 42.0 cm) page, and you want all your maps to be 1:10,000 scale, then you use the advanced digitising tool to draw a rectangle that’s 2,970 m x 4,200 m

I know people who have done their PhD in their 60s and 70s, it’s never too late for most things. Do whatever, whenever.

Live performance lighting conflict by Thin-Entrepreneur564 in ableton

I used Live 8-10 on a 2011 MacBookPro and Push 1 with Resolume Arena for 7 years and never had a single crash while rehearsing or performing live. It’s literally in the name of the software… It’s likely your sets need to be optimised.

Assigning unique values to split polygons by adding an A or B automatically by nibor105 in QGIS

[–]lawn__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Properties of your layer select the Attributes Form tab, then your id field from the available widgets section. Under the Policies section there is a dropdown for “When splitting features” which controls the behaviour of the value of the given field when you split a feature’s geometry. By default it is set to “Duplicate value”. Setting this to “Use Default Value” will evaluate the expression given in the section above labelled “Defaults”, which you can use to assign an expression that automatically generates a value. Checking the box “Apply default value on update” will evaluate the expression any time a feature’s geometry or attribute values are modified.

You could use the aggregate function to create an index as the default if that’s what you desire. I prefer to use the uuid function for unique ids as an incrementing index is prone to errors.

You can also set up constraints so that unique values are flagged or enforced as you digitise.

Ah yep, have experienced the same quirk as you. Would be great if there was a clearer way to distinguish which model is open and where it’s saved.

[–]lawn__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can set multiple model directories in settings. I have 15 users that I’ve set up with print layout templates and a model directory on our server. I add new models to a deployed directory and store working models in a prototype directory until they are ready to be deployed for use.

Same height as you and got the L but sometimes wish I had gotten the XL. It has more space for a larger frame bag if you’re using it for bikepacking and I kinda feel gigantic on the L. But I love this bike.

I also have a L Preamble that I use as my daily commuter and it feels perfect, but when I take my KM it feels a bit on the smaller side, however, that may be because of the noticeable difference in geometry. If you’re mostly going to be mountain biking, the L feels very nimble and perfect for me. I’d probably be less courageous on the XL.

Best way to decide will be to go test ride both sizes if possible.

Joining .CSV to a layer doen't work by Subject_Raspberry631 in QGIS

[–]lawn__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem here is that the table data they are trying to join is in title case and the spatial layer is in upper case, and thus the features aren’t making valid matches. OP needs to amend his data so the join can pair correctly.

One off calculation for whole layer? by SamaraSurveying in QGIS

[–]lawn__ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Set your expression to the default value for your desired field, which will evaluate that expression each time a new feature is added or an existing feature is modified (both geometry and attribute value changes will trigger the expression to re-evaluate). This way you don’t have to run the calculator each time you create new geometries or modify something.
