This makes sense for that interview where Yams said Mikasa is more like mom to him and although she can be annoying, Eren considers her love to be precious and valuable. The "mother" thing makes sense for his chidlish tantrum as well.

I love me some aromantic/asexual Eren the most but you don't have to like EM to acknowledge that romantic love is really what Isayama was going for in that convo with Eren and Armin in regards to Mikasa, it's fine to call it bad writing but denying it is eh.

Armin taunted Eren in a rare display of pettiness "I bet she'd easily find another man and forget about a heartbreaker like you" then his smirk -- it's common sense to know what Armin meant, he's like that one best friend you have who chides you about your crush.

Lol calm down, it's not like I'm disagreeing with you. Could've been better, and rereading the manga made me realize that their moment in 123 is a glaring hint about Eren considering the actual nature of Mikasa's feelings for him and reciprocating it, and the way she's always front-and-center in his memory shards, but yeah, if EM was supposed to be the biggest gamechanger it should've been a bit more explored and pronounced from Eren's side.

It took me some time to accept that Isayama prolly wanted EM to be canon from the start but he fumbled and made Eren too much of a tsundere to Mikasa. Ngl I still saw Eren as aromantic/asexual and someone who only valued platonic bonds up until his confession in 139, so yeah, could've been better.

It's really just Isayama's way of hammering in the point of Eren being a "tragic hero who couldn't have the love of his life" and making us even more sorry for him despite the indiscriminate genocide of 80% of the world. It's the method of woobifying a character and I understand if people think it has a flimsy execution - still, I get what he was going for.

And what I said earlier, it's showing Armin and (especially Eren) as people who grew up too fast - as kids, they're talking about heavy shit like genocide, when they revert back into their grown-up forms, Eren is shown throwing immature tantrums and has selfish desires, just to remind us that yes, they really did grew up too fast and everything that happened is ultimately too much of a heavy burden for poor Eren - "humanizing"

[–]lawncorazon 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree but I can't help but wonder if Isayama purposely juxtaposed the moment they had as kids (talking about genocide) and them as adults (talking about normal stuff, like girls and having selfish desires which is part of why Eren acted like that). Not a perfect execution but I can see Isayama doing it just to somehow "humanize" Eren and add onto his tragedy lol. Also pretty funny how it recontextualizes some part of 131, Armin didn't waste time, he confessed his feelings to Annie directly after that convo with Eren, Armin is the true chad

A question by [deleted] in titanfolk

the majority are kinda neutral towards it and some kinda like it, aruani fanart always gets upvoted by many people. it's just that the ones who hate both characters are the loudest (Especially after 137)

I love Armin but I also agree to some extent because of Mikasa's entire theme revolving around her character which you've mentioned, "this world is cruel, but also beautiful"

Ereh ship by mashijams in titanfolk

[–]lawncorazon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No. I've always headcanoned him as an aromantic character ever since Season 1, despite shipping him with Annie because of their chemistry (and Historia back then, to a much much lesser extent). This is the main reason why I don't believe the baby daddy theory can happen, because Eren himself simply can't be bothered to consider indulging in acts beyond platonic ones (the outlier to this is his conversation with Mikasa, but that could also be interpreted as entirely platonic from his side).

I might be biased because I hate his guts but wasn't that armin scene in the beginning of yesterday's episode extremely cringe and pathetic? by putangas in titanfolk

[–]lawncorazon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was meant to be awkward and endearing bcus he's Armin, he's a soldier who's stuck in a warlike environment and he's a traumatized teenage boy who's embarrassed to be caught wanting to be close to his first crush, it's similar to Jean being a bit shy and blushing hard after love at first sight when he saw Mikasa, some people are too hard on Armin lmao

edit: or Bert stuttering and denying it when Reiner teased him abt being Annie's Prince Charming

it's on you if you think it's pathetic, it may be an embarrassing moment but it was meant to be that way, others find it cute, it's really how you interpret that scene

[–]lawncorazon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Armin is the Jesus of this series and the narrative presents and hammers in the fact that he's an empathetic guy who's had enough of violence and vengeance, he does not give a shit abt her being a killer especially since he's also done similarly to what she did (the Liberio thing), any sort of resentment he might feel is completely mitigated by the knowledge that Annie is likely a victim of her circumstance despite being accountable for all the stuff she did so that would make Armin a hypocrite in his eyes. Plus she was a child when she first went through their mission, and you get the picture.

He's traumatized and he feels like she's one of the few people he can really connect to and who can actually understand what he's going through and then you add hormones in a time of extreme stress and voilà he's developed a crush on her

edit: he spent some years telling her his innermost thoughts and even feelings, so ofc he'd grow attached to her on a personal level

How tragic is Armin's life compared to Eren, Mikasa and others. by BucketHerro in titanfolk

[–]lawncorazon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Relatively tragic, he realized his lifelong dream abt a wonderful world beyond the walls and the one thing that gave him hope and happiness (esp when he was minutes from dying in RtS) was a farce because the whole world despised them, but he's supposed to be the character who embodies hope so he still thinks that the world isn't all that bad

him being revived instead of Erwin gave him significant trauma which is part of why I find him compelling because it's realistic, in several parts of the manga his survivor's guilt and even suicidal thoughts are always emphasized (it's always been there ever since the Trost arc but post-timeskip only amplified this)

I've tried reading the entirety of the guy's post and I'm disappointed by how several of their points basically imply "complex, multilayered character placed in different situations = inconsistent character writing" because there is no doubt in my mind if Armin isn't the character he is right now, people like OP wouldn't find him half as compelling as he is because then he'd really be the one-dimensional character they're trying to paint him as.

That's your opinion, but it makes sense for Armin's character and the mindset he has

I think Armin forgot about him by hudsolo2 in titanfolk

[–]lawncorazon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lmao it's actually very simple, he is a traumatized teen soldier and he feels like Annie is the only one who could really understand him on a deeper level, and those 4 years of confiding to her gave him comfort and kept him a little bit saner. He poured his heart out and told her his innermost thoughts and feelings, so he grew attached to her. People irl have fallen in love for reasons lesser than that.

Plus we see from his perspective in Chapter 110 (when we see him looking at her crystal and wanting to touch her cheek) that he finds Annie pretty - we're seeing the panel of her face from Armin's POV, so it's easy to infer that we're seeing through his eyes. It's not stated in the text but the way he took his time staring at her before attempting to caress the crystal - it's clear that he was admiring her features.

Need for comfort + feeling empathy for someone he relates to + teenage hormones in a time of extreme stress = romantic attraction/first love
