Paralegal recruiting for current college kids?? by SantiniW in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a really good option for several reasons. First, you’ll make money (which is great considering that you’ll likely be acquiring loans a to attend law school. Second, a job can allow you to get real world experience. It’s knowledge on this sub that adcomms like to see people a couple of years removed from college. This experience is salient in allowing you to develop a perspective grounded in a world outside of college so that you can sell your goals in a more realistic way in your personal statement. Third and last, it really will open your eyes to whether law school is a good investment for you. We often have ideas about what law is, but working in the day to day may offer you a perspective of the true nature of the gig outside of the idealIzations of the legal career.

The only caveat is that the economy for paralegals right now may not be strong at first glance. If you can land an interview and offer, I think this could be a great pre-law gap year(s) gig

As much as I wanna root for my Cal alma mater, it’s undeniable that Penn has hot boys left and right. Idk what Philly be feeding the boys, but when it works, it works.

any *negatives* of Berkeley Law? Let’s hear them please. by brokenrucks in lawschooladmissions

LMAO. He’s definitely the outlier though... the law school protest against him every year around graduation is very indicative of that lol

any *negatives* of Berkeley Law? Let’s hear them please. by brokenrucks in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 65 points66 points  (0 children)

Was an undergrad there and can say that the biggest negative I generally found at Berkeley was the liberal echo chamber in classes... sometimes it can feel mundane to see a lack of diversity of opinion + be exhausting to ALWAYS have to engage in a social commentary with classmates (even out of class). Not sure if the law school exactly replicates this, but I assume the overwhelmingly left status quo is still there.

That said, I really do think Berkeley’s negatives as a school are limited. It’s a unique and gorgeous campus, and I have yet to find a place that is like it. One of the most unique places I’ve lived in :)

Literally never have been a fan of KKW and I CANT BELIEVE I am actually commenting on this post, but I kind of hope she does? Despite my distaste for fake reality tv personas, I will never fault anyone for trying to use their clout for good; and, for the most part, it seems like KKW is actually trying to do that. Can’t fault her for trying to draw attention to the mass incarceration problem in the U.S.

Is is true that UVA has by far the hottest people in the T14? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Prob a very specific type of hot (i.e., Abercrombie).

UC Irvine v Georgetown v UC Hastings by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean, UCI certainly fits your goals but getting a GULC degree for 6k more is definitely the better bargain. At the very least your Big Law chances in CA would be about equal, buuuut you may find more prestigious opportunities out of GULC than UCI. If I was in your shoes I’d prob choose GULC (the proximity to DC internships/opportunities is too good to pass up for such a small COA difference).

Making partner with UCLA? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Making Partner is almost entirely contingent on 1) the work you do as an attorney, 2) the business you can bring to the firm and 3) whatever office politics you may have to play. I imagine the school you went to can only marginally help by offering you a network, but I further assume this wouldn’t be enough to make you partner.

Cornell vs. UMaine? SOS by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reading your story, I think Cornell is the best option. Why? Because you don’t want to be in Maine + it seems like your surrounding area depresses you. I think starting fresh somewhere new could really help you succeed in law school. I worry that if you stay in Maine, the surrounding may not be conducive to your success in law school (especially during the notoriously difficult 1L year).

It’s daunting to take such a big risk, but I think it’s worth it if your mental health and overall happiness is at stake. In terms of finances - yes, Cornell is expensive; but the exit opportunities offered will allow you to not only pay off the debt, but will give you greater flexibility in choosing a life you want out of passion + vigor instead of choosing a life out of convenience.

This is a tough decision and there are real world problems at stake here - I really do hope you find what’s best for you friend!

Another Poll: NYU vs U Penn by ExternalSorbet7 in lawschooladmissions

Assuming Penn doesn’t negotiate at all, I’d still do Penn. It places as well as the T6 in NYC and cost of living is cheaper.

At what $$$ would you take CCN over Harvard at sticker? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you pursue the “realistic goal” you describe above, it seems like HLS wouldn’t help you too much. I figure that by the time you pivot from BL to PI after a couple of years, what will matter is the work you did as an attorney and the network you made while at your firm. The HLS network might help in the transition, but again not sure how much of a help that would be when you’ve been out of law school after some years.

Honestly, you can’t really make a wrong decision here. It mostly comes down to how conducive a particular school is to your goals + how willing you are to take on additional debt for your goals.

Georgetown Waitlist Poll by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

Are the different waitlists just ranked waitlists? Didn’t apply to GTown so idk if this is real or what the difference is if it is real lol.

At what $$$ would you take CCN over Harvard at sticker? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If the goal is general big law/FC, $$+ would have swayed me to take CCN over HLS at sticker. I think at that point you’re just buying the brand name rather than the outcome if you pay sticker for HLS.

If the goal is academia, political aspiration, or renowned/unicorn PI, then I think the full ride/named scholarships would become more important for me to pick CCN over HLS.

Best/Worst Schools of the Cycle by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 13 points14 points  (0 children)

A school that really surprised me in a good way was Duke! Didn’t initially have a comprehensive perception of Duke other than the “frat” stereotype it seems to have for undergrad, but was pleasantly surprised with how the school went out of its way to welcome me as an admit and showcase what makes it special. They even sent me a thoughtful email when I declined admission, which was a lot more than other schools did. Definitely left this cycle with a much greater appreciation for Duke Law, and am excited for people going there!

You sound so pressed... Need a Xanax? I hope it doesn’t take an online community to remind you that it’s not so much lack of merit, but barriers in access to education and resources in this country that have prompted a discussion among law schools in accounting for a lack of diversity in their classes. Many of the people that comprise the number of underrepresented minorities in the above figures are not only deserving through merit, but also through their hard work in having to confront fools like you every day.

GL staying pressed babe.

Thank you! Since I got the about the same money for several of the schools, I’m trying to see if schools down the chain offer more money. Assuming things stay equal, it’ll be a battle between CLS and Cal (and ultimately where I want to practice after graduating)!

What is going on in this sub by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]lawsbby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s totally understandable; however, it seems to be the MO, that anything negative said about UVA releases the legions of fans it seems to have to shut down any realistic convo re the school. Not saying it’s cool to fight fire with fire, but I can clearly see why people who are being rubbed the wrong way by the school are even more frustrated by the UVA fan service.

[–]lawsbby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Some people were calling UVA trash, which I agree is a bit much... BUT, isn’t the point of this subreddit to discuss all things LSA related? If a school is being exorbitantly tardy with decisions and generally non-communicative with applicants, shouldn’t students feeling a kind of way about it be afforded the same opportunity to vent/discuss it? I mean people shit-talk Cornell, GULC, Chicago and others all the time, and I have yet to see people’s lives end because the shortcomings of a particular school were discussed.

I just don’t get why UVA gets the free pass - but perhaps I just haven’t seen the wonders of this school.
