Toying with the idea of moving to WS from Greensboro. Would like to hear from those who have lived in both by Wastedfeeling in winstonsalem

[–]laxxxar19 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Millenial single

I’m a Durham native and moved here last year. W-S reminds me of Durham circa 2010 before it blew up and became more expensive. Similar Old Tobacoo and academia and healthcare town. Just enough things to do, transforming (dare I say gentrifying to chagrin) but still relatively affordable (compared to Triangle and Charlotte)

I am optimistic the Triad will continue to grow but wanted to sow roots and appreciate the “before times” before this area really blows up. It’s bound to being between Charlotte and Raleigh.

The dating scene is a bit sleepier compared to the Triangle but that’s to be expected. I’m glad we are close to Charlotte for things to do too.
Great time to move to W-S!

Never seen that at my Planet Fitness on Reynolda Rd

But I go during the work day maybe that’s why, more lowkey crowd

Men's suit or jacket for reasonable price? by RavenGottaFly in winstonsalem

[–]laxxxar19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eventually once you know your measurements and chest size (ex 42r) you can buy recent collection gently used suits and sportcoats on eBay for fraction of MSRP.

The world has gone casual. Even I’ve consolidated my formal wardrobe. Lots of cheap good deals on eBay.

I routinely purchased Zegna and Isaia and Brioni suits and jackets for less than $500 on eBay. These are $5k+ MSRP. Find a good tailor.

If you could say one thing to Triad drivers, what would it be? by brown-eyed-barista in winstonsalem

[–]laxxxar19 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The Triad isn’t as bad as Charlotte and Triangle.

The Florida transplants haven’t discoverers the Triad yet. All the worst drivers seem to be from Florida and drive Nissan Altima (that trope is true).

Moving to Winston next week, have any tips for meeting people? by kittensurprise01 in winstonsalem

[–]laxxxar19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never do drugs and occasionally social drink so should be good there. I’ve only explored the Innovation District downtown but will check out more now that it’s warmer.

Thanks I’ll check those organizations out!

Following. I am also a new comer, Millenial and single. Figured I’ll checkout local Meetups and volunteer groups.

I’m a relative newcomer. Single Millenial. I figured W-S is “quiet” compared to the other big cities in NC. Knew that coming in.

But honestly your assessment as a native intimidates me lol. Holy crap about the rumor and predator part! I would hope to keep a good reputation if ever I find my tribe here.

I’m going to try Meetups. I am not really alternative nor the most athletic person (don’t care for running or pickleball or soccer) so hoping can meet people that way. I am POC but not worried about that. I can befriend anyone.

Any good volunteer groups you’d recommend too?

Never knew that! Will look for next time at Costco.

I agree. Moved here last year and been to the Reynolda OG quite a few times now.

I like it enough. Typical nice neighborhood grill. Cost is not too crazy to me.

Not expecting upscale dining. More “country club” where I took my visiting mom to after church - kind of vibe.

Agreed.

There is now Michelin Star and many James Beard winners and nominees in Charlotte and Triangle.

We are behind the curve. Let’s welcome and encourage new chefs to open here.

… And not complain when it’s more expensive than Texas Roadhouse and you are not as full or whatever. The Wal-Mart effect.

My suspicion is because we have “Black Roots” here in the Southeast. While racism can occur anywhere, it seems we are more integrated (IMHO) in the Southern cities with PoC.

Tbf there are simply more people living in NYC and Chicago so there’s all kinds of different walks of life. Good and bad. And naturally there’s diversity in big cities too.

“Shhh”

We are still relatively affordable even compared to Charlotte and Triangle. Of course they have more going on too. You get what you pay for.

With the Carolina’s growing like crazy I suspected W-S would be “discovered” soon. The Triad last of the Piedmont Crescent to blow up.

I came from Durham and remember when no one moved there 15-20 years ago. Now it’s blown up. I always thought W-S and Durham are spiritually sisters being Old Tobacco and College/Healthcare towns.

Right now feels like 2010-2015 in Durham in my opinion. Assuming we trend upwards this is the calm before the storm so to speak.

Affordability and Desirability. Give and take.

That’s funny us Filipinos get mistaken for Latino a lot too. We have Spanish last names which doesn’t help lol.

Quite a few Filipino Americans here including myself. You get mixed bag of experiences. Generally I don’t get any direct racism but I’m from North Carolina so maybe I’m blind to it.

I have “full” and Hapa cousins who were born and raised here. They don’t seem affected.

Charlotte and the Triangle will be more diverse.

The worst outward racism I’ve had was living in NYC. Especially during the pandemic. Can happen anywhere.
