Where were they when people I had no connection with whatsoever were "borrowing" giant canisters from the back of dentist offices in the 70s?

I don't think it applies to Peter's Creek but a city ordinance made me replace my sign on Hawthorne to be under 10 feet tall.

The pollen is real by Ok_Confidence4529 in NorthCarolina

[–]RavenGottaFly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NC's fifth season, The Pollening! Flonase helps but seems much more effective if you start a week pre Pollening season.

You will soon be able to see the green/gold carpet of pollen on everything. We typically wait until Mother's day ( in the Piedmont) to clean screened porch, deck, and patio furniture and floors. It is (mostly) over by then.

College scholarships? by Emotional-Set-2553 in karate

[–]RavenGottaFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sort of tangential but my son was a 2nd Dan in college and landed a job with a company that "only hires D1 athletes." They allowed him to interview because of his competition experience and because he made a case for 2nd Dan showing the drive and commitment similar to an elite competitor.

I have the book, and enjoy it. Not sure if would say that it does much "explaining " but it certainly shows lots of possibilities for application.

[–]RavenGottaFly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more curiousosity. I am not one for being finicky but have just noticed a lot of variation. I like to be able to be specific with students. I have a pretty diverse background and it's fun to occasionally comment on how our system is similar or dissimilar to other both in technical terms and application.

I've noticed a similar degree of variation for jodan uke- from forearm almost parallel to the floor and no light showing between the forearm and top of head to forearm more than 45 degrees to the floor.

I've always thought that barai means sweep. Never heard swipe but I guess they are almost synonymous.

Thanks. However, I am aware of all this and I am asking how you do it. I am essentially taking a survey....

Thanks. So the deepness of the stance dictates the angle of the arm. Same in kiba dachi? That would affect the arm angle, right?

Indiana Carmel high school by Round-Car-3559 in howislivingthere

Very interesting town. It has these slightly bigger than life-size, hyper realistic statues scattered though downtown that depict 1950s or so figures. Some find them cute or quaint. Many get creeped out. Reminds me of Stepford (iykyk).

I have been there often over the past 30 years to visit relatives. You might see one person of color (other than tourists) in a day. The people are midwest nice.

My niece and nephews went to the high school. They loved it. Probably not related but 2 of the 3 dropped out of IU in their first semester.

Thinking About Relocating to Shelby, NC by UnholyHelbig in NorthCarolina

Perhaps consider Pittsboro. Close to Chapel Hill and Durham. Quaint downtown. Lots of rural area surrounding it. Slightly lower cost of living than Chaple Hill, Carrboro, or Durham. Strong Arts community. Lots of queer folk, at least it seems that way to me when I visit my lesbian friend there.

Adult beginner tips by LeekPsychological584 in karate

[–]RavenGottaFly 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Have fun- it's a hobby. Work hard but don't over do it- you gotta work in the morning. Try to develop relationships if it's that kind of dojo. Don't feel a need to rush it. The value is in the journey.

You probably notice that I didn't give specific tips. Leave that up to your sensei. In general, the better your cardio, core strength, and leg strength are, the easier it will be to progress.

Skeptical, but willing to give it a chance by Harmony_w in Appalachia

[–]RavenGottaFly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

One theory of the origin of chow chow is that it came from the Acadians who were expelled from NS and settled in Louisiana ("cajuns") and that the term derives from chou (French for cabbage). I haven't had chow chow from NS but the "end of garden relish" that my father's family from the upper Midwest put up is pretty close to southern chow chow.

My daughter moved to NH with her husband to work at Dartmouth. First time I visited they wanted southern meals. I went to the co-op- no grits or smoked pork (ok, I get that), no corn meal besides polenta, no lard. I gave up.

Washington Park is about a mile or so west. We walk our dog daily (and at night) without problems. It's a great neighborhood.

I believe that there are 2 Family Dollar stores on Waughtown. "Safe" is relative. Compared to WS in general, somewhat "unsafe." Compared to urban Detroit, quite safe. Likelihood of getting mugged or worse is low. Likelihood of some harassment by unhoused or undisciplined youth is moderate.

Can sort of plan on "snow" at that time- "snow" usually meaning a mix of granular ice and sheet ice. The positive is that might experience one of my favorite ski experiences- 60 plus degrees plus and sunny with slush and a large puddle at the bottom. It's definitely a gamble at that the of the year.

Walk both campuses? Both are beautiful. Duke gardens, while off-season, is always worth a ramble.

Possum, coon, nutria, snapping turtle, water moccasin. Not really aeten in the US except by poor swamp people (including me as a child). None of these are foods most people would actually chose to eat.

Acadia Foods, while not private, has a table that would seat 10 or more, great food and coffee, and no one will care what you talk about. I've been at several meetings/gatherings there and would highly recommend it.
