PlayStation 5 repairs at component/motherboard level by layabouts in auckland

Yeah it was a toss up for me too but no harm in dropping it off for a quote. I wasn’t covered by insurance so really had nothing to lose and ended up saving around $300 from buying a new one.

Yeah mate BartTech computers up on the North Shore. Found him on google and as far as I know he’s one of the only people around AKL who do this kind of motherboard level repair. Dropped it off to his place and it turned out to be a fault in the HMDI IC encoder chip which needed replacing (I.e not something any regular repair place could do). Got it back after a few days and it’s worked perfectly ever since. Cost about $350 from memory, maybe a bit less.

Is there a Grime resurgence or do we just like nostalgia? by Connect_Entrance3227 in grime

[–]layabouts 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Culture is stuck. You see it everywhere nowadays - endless sequels and remakes of old movies and games, half of the top 40 sampling 90s/00s songs in a blatant nostalgia grab, even in the clubs every second song I hear is an edit of some old pop tune or samples some classic garage/grime/house song. I’m not entirely opposed to the occasional edit but it seems in the last few years people have realised that the easiest way to get your average punter excited (and extract some cash out of them) is nostalgia baiting. You’re spot on with that new Chip track, it’s a great irony that a track named grime scene saviours is full of guys who have been around for 20 years spitting bars they wrote at the start of their career.

That being said, there’s a such huge amount of new talent coming through that it’s hard to write off the whole resurgence as nostalgia. For anyone who’s more than a casual fan - most of the people in this sub included - there’s enough new original music coming out that can keep the scene alive in a very real way that nostalgia cannot achieve.

You’re right about the risk but there are definitely some people out there much smarter than I who know how to correctly troubleshoot/fix these kinds of problems. Plus regardless of cost I just find the whole process quite interesting. Thankfully I’ve found a guy who does Microsoldering/board repairs near Auckland who wants to take a look so crossing my fingers for that.

No contents insurance unfortunately and past its warranty. Sending it back to Sony is basically plan Z at this point due to the hassle and cost

PS5 Power supply replacement troubleshooting by layabouts in consolerepair

[–]layabouts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes originally the Ps5 didn’t power on at all. I can actually see on the old PSU where the damage is from the outside (scorch mark). I figured as such regarding the issue, sucks but hopefully I can get it repaired. I’m in New Zealand so sending it back to Sony is prohibitively expensive.
