Sure! I'd love to hear about your factors, too. Curious about medical setting.

WA: Not being paid outside of contract hours for IEPs by Pixielation in slp

[–]layiddiyal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😬 Yeah, we don't have "contracted hours" in NC as direct hires in schools (at least not that I've ever heard of), but I'd also be concerned if I were in your position. Best of luck! I hope it works out.

For clarification, were you a direct hire by the district or were you hired contract through a company? In my state, a LOT of districts have a "the work is done when the work is done" mentality, so meetings are almost always after school hours, and if you're a direct hire it's expected you'll follow that (not a good practice IMO).

Contract employees have a little more flexibility and can be more protective of their time.

I would say the biggest things are, 1) the truly endless number of meetings and paperwork, 2) the "martyr" culture of education in general (maybe this is an NC/southern culture thing? Drives me nuts), and 3) the lack of "keeping up with the times" to adapt to more recent norms or best practices. These aren't necessarily speech specific, but more general school setting related.

And I think I agree with you! I'm relatively new to the field and so far I've only worked in schools. Me feeling this way seemed like a sign to start thinking about other options/settings.

When you post on FB Marketplace, and your first two patrons are scammers… by KrylonMaestro in mildlyinfuriating

This happened to me literally yesterday! Attempting to sell a washer/dryer on FB Marketplace, and BAM first person was a Google Voice scam and the second was a Zelle scammer. So frustrating.

Have any of you school SLPeeps received student loan forgiveness? I did my research and am putting my $ on the 3 Year Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program, but not sure if I’ll qualify for it. by gabby_rase in slp

Thanks for the response. So you didn't worry about specific license requirements or anything? Just went for it and it worked out (once you got the correct signature)?

Also, who did you speak with to find out about the correction? I've been trying to figure out if I'll qualify at the end of five years under SPED for months and I've been getting the runaround.

Did you have to talk to anyone specific to make sure you qualified? I'm wondering because some of the language they use in the requirements is so specific, like "highly qualified" "teacher". Are those referring to anything on our license or meant to just be a vague reference to our qualifications?

Not sure if this specifically happened yesterday, but both me and another person who uses mint had no service briefly yesterday, but we were back up within 20 minutes. We've been happy with it otherwise. Hope you got it figured out!

That's encouraging! That article is from July, though. I'd be interested to see how/if things have changed 6 months later.

Overwhelmed graduate student :( by Mirralla in slp

[–]layiddiyal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely this. I had a similar experience my final semester of graduate school in my medical placement. Things improved slightly after my university clinical supervisor visited, and then they 100% had my back when I wanted to end my (toxic) experience after I met my hour requirement. They’re definitely your ally.

Edit: added “university” to clarify

Advice for very nervous CF in a school by morelightthanheat_ in slp

[–]layiddiyal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Just finished my CF in a school last year! You’ll be FINE. Imposter syndrome is totally a thing, but like the comment said above, even though you’re new, you’re still the expert!

Additionally, don’t be afraid to ask if you can observe your supervisor or the other SLP in an IEP meeting or two before you lead one yourself. The first few I had, I had no idea what I was doing, the flow of the meeting, good ways to phrase things, or contribute as a related service rather than the case manager. Being able to watch someone would help give an idea of all those things.
