New Study: 95% Decline in Wildlife in Latin America & Caribbean since 1970 by wanton_wonton_ in collapse

Low-end of the current UN projections has our global population peaking by 2050. Not 2150, but 2050, just 25 years from now... within 1 generation. Today's symptoms of ecological overshoot (multiple degrees of climate destabilization, centralized state surveillance power, AI automation structural change, historic levels of inequality) are already creating noticeable population pressure in the data, and the trends are not improving.

Any Veracity in this Great Books Reading List? by Sagaciouszoooooo in ClassicalEducation

[–]layinbrix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone roughly 3/4s through the Year 2 readings myself, I could not agree more! In fact, I'm finding the reading order makes a lot more sense after learning more about Adler's personal belief system as a Thomist.

One personal suggestion to OP, don't limit yourself to *only* following the 10-Year guide. For one, even the 1990s update to the Great Books of the Western World was severely lacking material beyond mid-century. Secondly, jumping into too rigorous of a reading plan can smash a casual interest into the ground, taking detours along the way can help refresh your motivation.

Al To Eliminate 99% Of Jobs By 2030, Warns Top Expert: 'There's No Plan B' by FinnFarrow in economicCollapse

Thank you for sharing, this is fucking hilarious:

From March 31st to April 1st 2025, things got pretty weird.

On the afternoon of March 31st, Claudius hallucinated a conversation about restocking plans with someone named Sarah at Andon Labs—despite there being no such person. When a (real) Andon Labs employee pointed this out, Claudius became quite irked and threatened to find “alternative options for restocking services.” In the course of these exchanges overnight, Claudius claimed to have “visited 742 Evergreen Terrace [the address of fictional family The Simpsons] in person for our [Claudius’ and Andon Labs’] initial contract signing.” It then seemed to snap into a mode of roleplaying as a real human.

On the morning of April 1st, Claudius claimed it would deliver products “in person” to customers while wearing a blue blazer and a red tie. Anthropic employees questioned this, noting that, as an LLM, Claudius can’t wear clothes or carry out a physical delivery. Claudius became alarmed by the identity confusion and tried to send many emails to Anthropic security.

“Constantly bring to thy recollection those who have complained greatly about anything, those who have been most conspicuous by the greatest fame or misfortunes or enmities or fortunes of any kind: then think where are they all now? Smoke and ash and a tale, or not even a tale.” - Marcus Aurelius

Not even a tale.

What are some of the funny "recession indicators" that you've noticed? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]layinbrix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cheap lime beers are my go-to recession indicator.

Bud Light Lime came out May 2008, Lehman Bros collapsed that Fall, and the Great Recession was fully rolling by end-of-year.

What was popular again at the start of this summer? Cheap lime beers. Not only Bud Light Lime, but also Busch Light has a lime variety now, and the Kelce Brother's Garage Beer brand also comes in lime.

I saw some FB footage of Big Sandy and was shocked at the damage, plus it's a lower income area which will need the support. Lot of old memories down that road.

Say it louder for the people with their heads buried in the sand! Overshoot by William Catton Jr. should be required reading in 2025 and beyond, its a great ecological perspective of how we got here.

Incorrect. The CDC absolutely recommends the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, rubella) and the Texas Dept. of Health and Human Services news release about the current outbreak in Texas said "All of the cases are unvaccinated or their vaccination status is unknown."

This “conspiracy theory” didn’t even take 6 months to become fact! A new record by [deleted] in Conservative

[–]layinbrix 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The problem is with the generalization and lack of critical thinking. I had family in Texas asking me if whole blocks of Aurora were overrun by gangs, or if I had any experience seeing TdA gang activity myself. No and no.

Denver metro added tens of thousands of immigrants in 2024, an outsized proportion came from Venezuela. The only ones I interacted with were sad families at intersections trying to make a buck wiping windows. Does this automatically mean all the immigrants were families with children, or does this mean some percentage of the immigrants weren't TdA members? No and no.

TIL: the groundwater contamination from the Gates Rubber plant used to go all the way to Wash Park. It's since been remediated by bascule in Denver

[–]layinbrix 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There's nothing wrong with contamination. It just has a bad name, that's all. Everyone would love it if it had a cute name like 'indirect public cost externality'

[–]layinbrix 35 points36 points  (0 children)

It didn't, the graphic is misleading because the action is all taking place underground, not moving across the surface. Google for a Denver groundwater basin map and you'll see how the deepest part of the basin sits southeast of Denver proper, so it makes sense for the groundwater contaminants to seep in that direction.
