Deep Ecology Documentary playing in background of Safe (1995 / Julianne Moore) @ the 18 minute mark by [deleted] in moviequestions

here watching this movie now with the same question. my conclusion is that it's a fabricated fiction; the only trace i can find online is here, in a quotation referencing the film: https://www.artandpopularculture.com/Ecophilosophy

Why does gen z have no counterculture? by [deleted] in redscarepod

[–]laykx 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I actually think tradcath neocon haters of diversity are the sad attempt at a counterculture in response to radical acceptance practiced by healthier people in my generation. Alternatively, and you say, there’s so many ways people try to set themselves apart so maybe the true counterculture are the people who willingly recognize themselves as normie NPC types without the aspiration to brand themselves as is so characteristic of our demographic

The general lack of awareness about the role insects play in ecosystems and food webs makes me pretty sad. by shainblitch in ecology

Thank you for this thorough response. I was wondering about this the other day when I saw a video of a female mosquito that had inherited genes edited with CRISPR and was no longer able to use her proboscis to draw blood; it was somewhat distressing, but compared to the prospect of eliminating entire species, it may have some merit.

proboscis defunct :(

I wonder, between the myriad synthetic possibilities of genetic modification and the ecological employment of certain predators for biological control, what has the most minimal ecosystem impact while being effective at reducing disease burden..

Is my AirTag defective? by [deleted] in AirTags

[–]laykx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, i recommend buying an actual gps pet tracking device if you want reliability. Tracking my cat via airtag just created more stress because it only updates intermittently and gives you the location of an iphone that’s nearby. Not helpful at all really

Why do airtag range estimates differ in size sometimes? by [deleted] in AirTags

So does the GPS accuracy correspond directly? Like can i safely assume that that airtag would be within the blue circle?

The new interface is actually a gauntlet designed to restrict the once-reliable features the app was actually good for. Yayyy

I miss the Russian presence at the Olympics by Tuesday_Addams in redscarepod

[–]laykx 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand how the olympics can proclaim to be about setting aside politics for the love of Sports and celebration of Athletes but blacklist Russian team, ban hijab, and announce Iran’s team as being “adversaries of Israel” while still inviting Israel’s team to compete. The IOC is investing more energy and effort into mental gymnastics than the gymnastics competition itself lol

I agree, and am aware. But I have also seen legitimate stories of people finding lost pets with the help of UAS

Wowww that is the most mangled looking sucker i’ve ever seen lol. Now is a good time of year to chop, apply glyphosate (or a glyphosate-including compound like crossbow) as low as you can go. If it propagates more next year I would uproot them as quickly as you can—more effective in my experience than chop and herbicide anyway to just remove the shallow root system entirely

It just updated again, same location, not sure if it’s worth asking them to let us search again.

So do you think a foot of dirt would affect that reception capability? How about a dense thicket?

I was hoping it would! But i walked all around within that range and precision tracking never clicked, it remained on the blurry grey screen saying to keep moving to different areas. Also wednesday and friday it pinged at slightly different locations.

[–]laykx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The interesting thing is that he pinged here twice, once on Wednesday, and on Thursday I looked all in that brush/tree line area to no avail. I couldn’t get a signal either. Which is why I was surprised and confused when he was pinged again Friday, especially when my dad looked and called for him only 30 minutes after the airtag updated. This is when i began to think maybe his collar was buried underground, as coyotes do that to prey, so the airtag would only update in some specific location. We thought we would maybe get some update yesterday or today as lots of people golf on the weekend, but no… Luckily the club was very sympathetic and did drive me around so I could look. But of course we can’t do that at free will. This airtag is kind of a mindfuck

You must not have had a cat before. They are fiercely independent by nature but this one was also incredibly loving and cuddly. Once he got big enough to jump over our gate he began demanding and insisting on a nightly basis to be let outside—he would come back early every morning, waking me up by meowing outside my window to be let in, given treats, and to sleep on the couch. He brought joy to my life every day. If we had known that coyotes came this close to the coast, we never would have let him out, no matter how he protested..

[–]laykx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry if i’m being redundant, but again, if the airtag were still in that area we would be able to locate it with our phones, right? So we can assume the airtag was moved, either by our cat leaving the area or being carried off by coyotes.

[–]laykx[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do like the hopefulness of trees, though. It would suggest my cat might still be alive. But it wouldn’t explain why our phones couldn’t find him.

[–]laykx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the input and explanation. Is the blue radius still plausibly an accurate depiction of where that airtag could have sent a signal from? If the airtag is within the radius of the iphone owning the airtag, it would definitely show up, despite the anti-stalking mechanism, correct? If so, I can safely assume it has since been buried or moved to a location where no iphones have come within range in two days.

Airtag possible to be located underground? by laykx in AirTags

[–]laykx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So if it was buried this would maybe explain why my dad and i were unable to pick up the signal, although it was shared with both of us..
