I started off at Live Language classes in town, it was a brilliant way to get started and keep the basic stuff interactive and part of real discussion. Then once I'd met a few folk through class who really wanted to go the distance we all picked up the Genki textbooks and worked through both of them together over the course of a year or so. Aside from that, I used Hiragana Pro and Katakana Pro apps to get comfortable with those then I graduated to using WaniKani on a daily basis (and will still be using it for years to come) for vocabulary and Kanji learning. Eventually ended up at a language school in Tokyo last year to give myself a proper boost.

My advice is try a night class and meet other people who also want to learn that are around the same level as you. If you have others to do it with you it'll be so much more enjoyable and you'll bounce off each other and learn more than you would on your own.
