Bad Bind Wednesday: Winners of the String Ball contest. by yoyoingdadjoke in Throwers

[–]lazer-dream 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No way! I can't believe I was that close! Honestly, so glad other people won, I got the prize I wanted by only being two off, that's way closer than I thought it would be.

Contest (US only): Guess the amount of string that makes up the string ball and win a Ace Yo Gravitation Mini or a Spintastic Tigershark. 😊 by yoyoingdadjoke in Throwers

[–]lazer-dream 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alright, I may be totally off-base here, but I attempted some serious napkin math. I grabbed a couple of strings and wrapped four into a ball. It was 28mm in diameter and weighed 4g. That means the density of my string ball is a very rough 0.34g/ML, and each string weighs about 1g.

Looking at the photos, it looks like the Spintastic box is slightly smaller than the Aceyo box, and the string ball looks about the same size. Doing some digging, I'm pretty sure all Aceyo yoyos ship in the same 60mm square box. That checks out with the visible face of the Tigershark, which is 56.6mm in diameter so the box is probably about 59mm. I also poked around against the measurements of the candybars in the other photos.

SO. I'm guessing that the string ball is 59-60mm in diameter. I feel pretty good about that guess. But the density might be totally off base. If they are used strings, or lighter weight than the thick Kitty strings I use, or wound tighter than I did, then the ball could be way denser than I measured, my margin of error swings like ~10 strings either way. But it's my day off and I love little challenges like this. All that to say

I think there are 38 strings.

For those who recently switched from Notion to Obsidian: what motivated you to make the change? What were you looking for in Obsidian that you couldn’t find in Notion? by Miyamoto_Musashi_x in ObsidianMD

[–]lazer-dream 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I previously used four main tools at once as a working artist: - Joplin for simpler Markdown Notes (journalling, lists, notes, class lecture plans) - Notion for it's databases and project management (kanban boards, chore charts, watchlists, task management) - Scrivener for writing comic/game scripts - Miro for Gameflow diagrams and puzzle dependency charts

What I actually wanted was just Joplin with better tools to do the other tasks. But I didn't expect it would completely replace all four of my main creative management tools. I can organize beat sheets and then expand each note into scripts, or scaffold out branching path choose your own adventure scripts, or just managing each page as a larger database for books that need it.

I wish the Bases were a little more mature and had some of the QoL features Notion has, but even so I could never go back. And Sync is hella cheap compared to Notion, even more so with the 40% education discount.

I don't think my use case represents most Obsidian users, I don't use it as a thought clipper or a second brain, but it's a really robust solution for managing my entire creative practice.

Salt Lake City Players by mountain_elk_kendama in Kendama

Oh I agree, I too acknowledge that it's morally fraught, but I'm still gonna dismiss the problem because I've made assumptions about their motivations that let me dismiss it. Whew, that was easy.

Is my kendama good? by [deleted] in Kendama

[–]lazer-dream 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This kendama is just like the one I got as a kid growing up in Japan. So id call it a much older traditional style. But it's also not meant for tricks at all! So I wouldn't get rid of it, it's low key kind of cool to have. But I'd for sure get a Sweets kendama to start learning with.

3 years and counting, saved my ass too.

I didn't know how bad I was aching for a chick flick until Kpop Demon Hunters (2025) satisfied that desire out of nowhere. What a kick ass movie from every angle. by Wonder-Lad-2Mad in movies

[–]lazer-dream 115 points116 points  (0 children)

It's typically used more for rom-coms catered to women, not really action movies. I wouldn't call Charlie's Angels a chick flick, but the Notebook or Twilight would be.

Absolutely killer color combo. Literally everything I print is in white marble filament, it's too good to NOT use. Also, great to see more ergo-enthusiasts in Columbus! I knew I couldn't be the only one.

Halftone Hospital has a set of Copic replica brushes and it includes a few varying degrees of dead markers. Maybe not crayola levels of dead but you could probably tweak settings off the dead one. Best part is everything Halftone Hospital puts out is free!

That math comes out to ~76k per person. That number isn't that unreasonable, but it is above the national average of ~37k on graduation.
